hi!
I want to buy some walkie talkies for our upcoming cruise - any suggestions?? We have brought some with us in the past - but they never worked really well - too much interference. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks-

I assume that you were using FRS [Family Radio Service]radios in the past....they only transmit at half a watt. GMRS [General Mobile Radio Service] radios have higher power, but you are required to get a license to use them. I have taken Amatuer Radio handhelds in the past....they transmit at a higher power than GMRS, but I didn't find them very reliable at all for use within the ship.....or shore to ship. The crew uses hand held radios on board, but they use repeaters throughout the ship to make them reliable.

Personally, I wouldn't spend the money on radios simply for use aboard ship. If you want to use them while ashore, they should work with a range of a few miles.

I brought them on our first cruise with the kids thinking it would help us keep in touch....I found that they did not work well at all. The kids/I were up on deck as we sailed out of Miami and DH was in the sports bar watching the Daytona 500 and they didnt work between above-below deck. We ended up not using them at all, just made sure the kids would check in with us periodically and let us know exactly where they were going. They were 9 & 12 at the time. Enjoy your cruise.

I agree with everyone else. We took some on the ship and they didn't work very well.

If you do use them, please be considerate of the people around you.nothing like laying out in the sun relaxing while one can hear family conversations on the walkie talkies... Just like Nextel phones.I hate those in public areas too.

We bought Motorola 22 channel/lower channels which comes with 3 hand held sets 3.6 v batteries - plus charger at Costco for $79 with a $10 in store rebate.

Used them on:
15 Day TransAtlantic Voyager of The Seas
7 Day Carnival Conquest (twice)

Had about 99% coverage in all parts of the ships and between all decks. We used channel 18 with sub channel 10. KEY buy a good quality

Since I could not edit my walkie talkie post. . thought I would had. Our Motorola with the 22 uppper and as many lower for privacy sent and received on ship and off ship. My wife stayed on ship in Cartagana, Spain and I walked through out the town and in except when I was behind a hill or a huge church blocking the ship, we could talk. They are a great investment for cruising. Hint -I can leave my wife shopping for shoes, scarfs and such and go my way shopping and still keep in touch
