Are they useful on a cruise ship? Are they allowed by the cruise lines? I am sailing on the Carnival Destiny on January 4, 2004 and I am considering to bring walkie talkies with me to be in contact with my wife and kids while we are in the ship and when we go out of it. Any coments or advises??

Thanks

Yes they are very useful on the ship! I used them on my last one to be able to keep up with the Momster. Actually rented them from the cruise line.

I used them on a cruise once and the only problem you might run into is they may not work well between decks.

One more thing to watch for is the abundance of other families with them as well. You might have to do a lot of channel changing to find one that is clear of other people on the ship. But it is well worth it.

walkie talkies is a little too much for me.. Sure they are useful , but try to keep in mind that your on a vacation (to get away from cell phones , noise , ringing , shouting, etc.) To me walkie talkies are just a pain on my side.. If someone needs to get a hold of me that bad , I can be paged over the intercalm by the Purser's Office.

My husband and I were thinking the same thing - to use walkie talkies!

What a fantastic idea to use with a family trip!!

A group of us met, actually, here on Cruise Addicts last year, that were going on the same cruise. We all agreed to be on channel 3 the day of debarkation and channel 10 if 3 was crowded. We all met up on board ship and communicated with these gadgets all week. It was a blast. All these people we'd never met, that we had actually met on this message board, acting like we had known each other all our lives. The two way communication really came in handy. I definitely will use them again.

They can be nice to keep in touch. However, be thoughtful of the people around you. While we were in the solarium on the Grand last May there was a very loud woman screaming into her walkie talkie. We wanted to tell her just what she could do with it! Everyone around could not help but hear her screaming to her husband about this and that. I don't have a problem with people using them, just how they use them sometimes.
