Warning! Jamaica & Grenada

Hello,

Just wanted to pass on a warning. If you visit Jamaica, Grenada or any of the islands anywhere, be sure NOT to wear expensive jewelry, and do NOT carry an excessive amount of cash. Several years ago, my girlfriend went on a cruise to Jamaica. One of the tour buses carrying cruise pax was highjacked by 3 bandits and they took all of their jewelry, and cash. Yesterday I read a review on Cruise Addicts where a gal wrote about the same thing happening in Grenada.

Here is an excerpt from her review: On one of the cruise ship sponsored trips to a waterfalls in Grenada, ski masked robbers took jewelry and cash from Celebrity cruisers on the tour....like anywhere else in the world; crime is always a possibility

OK, I guess I won't wear my $200,000 gold necklace or continue to carry $50,000 in cash on me any more when I visit Grenada or Jamaica. Thanks for the warning!

Jamaica's a hole. I wouldn't go back there period, much less wear expensive jewelry. THat said, It's a good idea to not wear expensive jewelry and carry large amounts of cash at any foreign port as well as many places at home, that's just common sense, man.

You know, there are plenty of people out there that never think it will happen to them. I have snorkeled with quite a few of them. No kidding, most women wear their engagement rings. I have seen quite a few with gold earrings some with diamonds. Yes it makes sense to people with a good head on their shoulders, but not everyone is cruise savvy.

Have and will continue to vacation with my jewelry - my wedding/engagement ring never come off (only cleaning & repairs). I once lost a tennis bracelet in Colonial Williamsburg and got it back (someone found it and gave it to a security guard) and met some wonderful people in the process. Jewelry is meant to be worn.
We have also enjoyed Jamaica in the past, but the tourist trade is a tempting target - we try to see things off the beaten path with a trusted islander, it's a beautiful country.
