Dumb question from 1st timer. What are water shoes/booties. Are they necessary items to have? Can they be purchased on board? If we just plan on swimming and not snorkeling, do we need them?

water shoes are neoprene shoes worn under swim fins or for use in water where you don't want to get your shoes wet and have to walk around in them all day, They can be purchased on the ship, they are almost required footwear if you are climbing Dunn River Falls on Jamaica. No, they are not needed if you are swimming, and they are not if you are snorkeling, diving, etc. They are just nice to have if you are wading in coral etc. A lot of the beaches in the Caribbean are sand and coral mixed.

Oh yeah, the boat will be glad to sell you a pair, of course they will be a lot more expensive. Depending on where you live, you can get them locally a lot cheaper, I just bought a pair at K-Mart about 3 weeks ago for 5.00. If you can find them before they get put up for the winter. Hurry Hurry

If you can't find them in the stores (Wal-Mart, etc.) try either a sports store or a garage sale! I see them @ garage sales all the time! They should only cost a couple of bucks. The ship will charge you triple. I think the ship will "rent" them to you, but the price is so outrageous.

I don't think you need them. I have been visiting in the Caribbean for years and do not own a pair. I have swam, snorkeled, helmet dive, etc. Flip flops for getting to the beach are all that is needed.
