A storm was supposed to hit the mountains. They said no snow for us. Well I woke up at 5am and we had about 3 inches. It came in fast and only lasted about 3 hours but boy did it get bad and quickly. And it was in the 20's so this stuff stuck and turned to ice really quickly. Of course they hadn't been prepared, didn't get the ice melt down and didn't sand. There were accidents everywhere on the traffic alerts this morning.
So I left 30 minutes early, I literally work 8 miles from home. By the time I got 2 miles down the street 20 minutes had passed. My knuckles were white I was shaking. It was like driving on a frozen lake. There was no traction, no ruts or soft snow just a sheet of ice about 3 inches thick. Cars were sliding and stuck everywhere. I pulled over on a side street at one point just to get my courage up to keep going.
OK I get back on the road and start out and stopped at a light. There were hundreds of cars because you couldn't go even 10MPH most of the time. It was just trecherous. So then the light changes and start up a hill. There is a camaro in front of me that is going sidways and a double bus in front of him. Well we had to stop the traffic was so heavy and the bus jackknifed when it tried to get going again. The camaro started out to try to go around and he got stuck. I said OMG I'm stuck behind this bus and it is sliding trying to get back going......a sand truck pulled up to help the bus and then everyone started pulling out and going down the median area. So when I could I got out there and followed the rest of the cars. I didn't get above 5 miles an hour the whole way. I arrived at work 1 hour and 45 minutes after leaving home. You couldn't even walk it was so bad. People sliding and slipping and cars trying to get around them so that they didn't get stuck.
There were people who only had to go 10 city blocks that came in later than me they got stuck in traffic too. It took them 1 hour.
I arrived at work safe but exhausted. It was a terrible commute and I hope never to have another one like it. By 11am when they got the plows out and the ice melt down along with the sun coming out everything was great! Boy the road crews here just don't get the job done. I come from the Boston area out in the suburbs where the roads are single lane each way and have never had a storm experience like this. This was just nuts!
