from the boards i know i will need raingear but i cant decide what to get.

the inexpensive ones you can get at dollar stores are compact and cheap in price, but they are so HUGE on me they look horrible. is it better to get a regular rain coat with hood or do most cruisers have on the "big" throw away type. my first cruise and getting set to go in sept. HAPPY CRUISING. dusty

I have cruised Alaska multiple times. Yes I have been in rain while cruising Alaska. It was never a heavy down pour while I was cruising. I have seen many in the cheap clear plastic rain poncho. I have done a lot of camping so I myself have a rain jacket with a hood and rain pants that I take. The biggest problem I find with a poncho, cheap or otherwise, is that the rain runs off the bottom of them and gets your pants and legs all wet.

I would suggest going to a place that sells camping equipment or fishing equipment. You will find several choices of rain gear in several different price ranges. Pick out what you feel comfortable in that matches a price you are willing to pay. You do not need a thick heavy rain gear.

I bought two thick plastic rain macs with hoods and they rolled up easy.
I got them online they were not expensive and we have only used them once in 3 cruises to Alaska :)

About three weeks ago I went to Target (in Florida) and bought 2 pairs of windpaints (1 lined, 1 not) and a windjacket. Forget about the ladies departments--head straight to men's wear. I experienced a lot of rain during my two weeks in Alaska, and never needed more than this gear I purchased in of all places the 'Sunshine State'. Oh, except for the rain hat I bought at shop in my first port of call, Ketchikan.

Do yourself and your fellow passengers a really BIG favor, and leave the umbrella at home. Get rainwear instead.

Enjoy your journey!

that is a great idea. and you are right, the mens department has a much better selection on those things. a thanks for advice about the umbrella, they can block the view for others im sure when you are on the deck and see something happening in a hurry. dusty
