HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO GET A BREATHABLE RAINCOAT- GORETEX LIKE , COMPARED TO THE PVC COATED, VINYL FEELING, LESS EXPENSIVE RAINCOAT. ALSO, THE PVC COATED ONES ARE UNLINED, BUT A BIT LONGER. PLEASE HELP, AS ALL I DO IS SHOP FOR RAINCOATS.

first of all congrats on your cruise and when are you going??

everyone has their personal tolerance to rain and cold factor. all i can tell you is i went in sept to glacier bay and all i wore out on the deck was a tshirt under a sweat shirt with a very light weight nylon hooded jacket ( walmart $10 in the sporting goods dept ) and was fine. if you are going all the way up to anchorage or beyond i would say you might need something more heavy, but i was fine. i would take along a head band for your ears and a pair of those light weight gloves you can buy for about $2.

it really depends on the time of year you go and where you come from. i am from the midwest and used to the cold. if you are from a warmer state you will feel the cold more. but i think alot of people associate alaska with the north pole and unless you really go '''up north'' it wont really be that way.

just layer with turtlenecks, a sweatshirt, hooded cover up and very comfy shoes and you will be fine. have a great time and beleive me, you dont have to stress over clothes for alaska as much as you think ( except for looking snazzy on formal night ). it is much more casual than you think. so pack your bag, take out half and you will still have too many clothes.

have a wonderful time and i know you will not regrett going to alaska. i loved it so much i am going back on the same ship to the same itinery next year.

carnival spitit sept 2003 and again may 11, 2005.

i have not been up that far and do not want to give you any wrong advice. but if you are from new york the cold should not bother you ( and that will probably only be the days you are in hubbard bay or glacier bay ). im sure someone who has been in that area in july will be able to help you. i am guessing that the way i dressed would be fine. have a great time.

Just went to Walmart as suggested by someone here. In the hunting dept they have a nice STERNS rain jacket for $29. Actually is a bit stylish and I expect I will wear it some more. Seems pretty good for moderate to heavy rain and wind. Not real warm, but I can layer and do sweaters underneath. Good pockets, drawstrings, hood, etc. It is NOT the pvc type that is more like a slicker. The sizes start at Med, and a bit large at that, so it will not work for the smaller folks. Very lightweight.
