Hello,

I am going to be stopping in San Juan on our e carribean cruise in May. Can anyone one suggest night activities on this island?

Also, I will be going to Torola, my husband would like to rent Jet ski's is that a possibility?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thank you :)

Hello Kikki, Sorry to see your question hasn't received any response yet, so I'll try to help a bit.

We just got back from our cruise on the Triumph and we had an evening stop in San Juan also. I did a lot of looking for a good idea of what to do there and unfortunately we never came up with any good answer.

There’s not a great selection. That's is probably why no one has jumped in with any ideas for you. The problem is that there is very little to do in San Juan in an evening. I don't think there is anything that people can whole heartedly recommend. We ended up doing the Bacardi Rum Factory tour.

Unfortunately it's not a great tour. It includes a bus ride to a ferry, the ferry ride across the harbor, (where they play music way, way too loud); and a bus ride to the factory. Sorry to say you don't really get to see the factory, just a little museum like visitor's center. You also get two free rum drinks, and a chance to shop in their gift shop, then a bus ride all the way back to the ship.

The cruise ship's description of the tour said it included photo stops at the fort and an another point of interest. The bus driver just skipped those, without consulting us. He offered to drop us off near the "shopping", but there really wasn't any shopping, everything being closed. There wasn't even any touristy kiosks open then either. (There had been a couple open when we started out on the tour). And there wasn't any shopping in the cruise terminal either other than a place to try, and buy cheap liquor.

Sorry to say, I don't think the Baccardi tour was worth the $59. per person it cost us. So I hesitate to recommend it. Maybe at half the price, it would have at least been "something to do".

Unfortunately, the other "activities' there don't seem any better.

These are the excursions offered by the cruise line:

Bacardi Evening Experience (ferry over to factory, tour and drinks)

Bioluminescence Bay Kayak Tour (This one’s supposed to be fun)

Juan Carlos & His Flamenco Rumba (Comments on the board said this was either very popular, or very boring. =shrug I didn’t hear any talk about it on the ship, good or bad.)

Night Horseback Riding

Old San Juan Sunset Tour (This was supposed to be informative. But still everything was closed.)

San Juan City/Juan Carlos & His Flamenco Rumba (Same ? as above )

San Juan Night Life Tour ( A bus tour, they pre- warn that you won't be able to see at night, and that everything will be closed.)

Our friends took the Night Life Tour and were not only disappointed, but kind of frightened. Like the excursion description warned, they couldn’t see much and everything was closed. But oddly the bus driver allowed some local people to board the bus and ride with them. The people looked a little unsavory, and seemed to frighten the driver, and the passengers. It was a very odd situation, all the way around. Our friends said nothing really happened, but they were glad to get back to the ship. (I doubt if that is the usual for this tour, or so I would hope.)

Probably the only other thing to do in San Juan is possibly just go out to dinner for the evening, and try the local cuisine. Then maybe go to one of the casino and do a little gambling.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Gayle - funny you should mention going out over there. We went to a casino as I mentioned in another thread...but what some of our friends did was tag along with some of the boat's crew. I know that sounds a little unsavory as well, but these people know all of the local hot spots and actually look out for you, even though they are "off duty". Our friends said that once they got to these little clubs and restaurants, they paid for a lot of the crew's drinks/food as a token of their appreciation, although the crew members in tow didn't expect it. That is a possibility as well.
