Dusty--I have gone from 1a to 4c, 1a to 4d, 1a to 5a all on the Spirit. However, on my first cruise with Carnival on the Victory I didn't go past the 1a. But that 1a on Victory was one of the best inside cabins I've ever had--like a mini-suite with no window. Don't let those photos of a cheesy bunk bed setup that you see on some cruise sites (including Carnival's own site) scare you away. You won't find that kind of setup on Spirit or any other 'new' Carnival ship. Enjoy your cruise to Alaska!!
