Where do you put your passport on excursions?

This may be a stupid question, but we are first-timers, so we're trying to think of all possible questions BEFORE we go. What do you do with your passport and other things when you go on an excursion that requires getting wet-ie-snorkeling or diving? Is there a place to lock up your personal belongings etc...or do you need to put things in waterproof bags and take with? Sorry if this is stupid, but we'd really like to know. Thanks!

NEVER take your Passport onshore. Your ship issued ID is sufficient. Lock your passport in your safe or leave it in the Pursers safe.(Better Choice). If You are uncomfortable about not having your Passport, make a photocopy and carry it in a waterproof case with your ship & photo ID. Have Fun& try to restrain yourself. It is a vacation you Know. Seriously, You will receive a packet from the Cruise line explaining all the details.

There are no Stupid Questions.

Thanks, I guess I was confused by all the postings about having to have a passport in order to disembark in the various ports we landed in and using that as ID....I assumed we'd have to show it upon disembarkation and carry it with us. Thanks for your help!

suzrouk. the above advice assumes you are a US citizen.. If you are not..... your passport is taken when you check in aboard the ship and kept throughout the cruise by the Cruiseline. You get it back the day before you leave the cruise. This happens to us all the time and we take photocopies of our passport ashore in all ports.
I don't know how this works when you leave from another country or say ..Europe somewhere ????
