which cards open safes?

Hi everyone. Saw something on another thread that has me worried.

We're sailing on the Carnival Valor and I just assumed our sail & sign cards would open the safe in our room. Is this not correct? I don't want to use my credit card to open safe, plus then only one of us would have access to safe at any one time.

Thanks in advance, Terry

You are supposed to be able to only use one card for the safe. (Sign and Sail is not recommend). The safe is supposed to recognize one card. BUT this is how I get around it. I’ve used the same two (2) cards for 3 years now. I use old canceled Bestbuy Cards, (any 2 should do) but they must have the same account number on them. That way my DW can carry one and I can carry one, incase we have to go back to the cabin at different times. They have not fail yet.

I have VOID printed on them with a Sharpie and keep them in what I call my travel box with other items that I may need or want to take with me.

Hope this helps

I am just curious...why don't you want to use a credit card for the safe? Kakarp has a great idea in using an older card for the safe. For me, it would be just another thing to misplace, so I like using my credit card to open and close the safe. Does anyone have a particular reason why I shouldn't use my active card? Thanks all!

Do NOT use your signs and sail card. If you do, it will deactivate it (According to the ship personnel). We used my husband's credit card with no problem. The only time we needed money out of it is if we were doing excursions, so we got money out for each of us depending on what we were doing that day. While on board, we did not need any money or ID, etc. Did not find it to be an inconvenience.

I read somewhere that the grocery store "loyalty" cards would work. I just picked up two Brookshires cards to try on the Elation in 38 days :). All cards with magnetic strip should have a number coded into them and with the grocery store cards they should be exactly the same. Just an idea and I'll let you know if it works.....

The ones I got from Brookshires have a magnetic strip, I guess so you can slide them through the keypad for the discount.

The card that locks the safe must be used to open the safe. The grocery store cards, with the magnetic strip, not a bar code, is the best idea. You get 2 identical cards and either one can open and close the safe. You do not want to use the sail and sign because it will open your cabin door and the safe if someone knows your room number. If you use a credit card and then lose it you will have trouble getting into the safe. For a husband and wife, the 2 identical cards are best. Even our Visa cards are not identical -- one has my name, the other hers. If she locked the safe, I could not open it. The old Best Buy card idea is excellent. Even old, expired credit cards will work, Gas cards might be another idea. For 2 people, the key is -- identical -- cards.

Hope this helps.
