Which deck is better for Alaska cruise

I understand that you get to see a lot of marine life on the Alaska cruise. Is it therefore better to be on a lower deck to have a better view of the whales and otters etc. Or is it better to be on a higher deck to have a better view of the scenery. Most probably we would be taking the Island Princess Alaska Southbound in June 2009.

Any guidance will be appreciated. Thanks

Book what you can afford as you can always run around the ship like an idiot to view the wildlife.

It has been my experience that to spot whales (you are usually watching for the blow that results when they exhale) it is better to be at a higher level. Even more important is to have a very good pair of binoculars and a lot of patience!

I would also suggest getting a cabin with a balcony for Alaska. When we were going thru the glaciers we attempted to go up on the main deck so that we wouldn't miss anything. We gave up that idea after a few cold minutes and came back down to our Baja cabin. It was much more pleasant to view the outdoors from our own balcony and then go back inside our own room for awhile to warm up!

I, too suggest an upper deck cabin/stateroom. It gives you a better panoramic view. Patience and binoculars are good suggestions. What I like about a balcony cabin is the fact you don't have to wrestle with others along the public rail for a good view. The comfort and privacy of your own balcony is a prize.

Since you are sailing southbound, I would recommend a cabin on the port (left) side of the ship. As you've seen above, there are personal preferences for high and low decks. But definitely book port side.
