Which is the best ruin?

I'm pretty sure this has been asked before, but when I searched CA I came back with so many hits I decided to ask again. We will be in Belize, Cozumel and Costa Maya in Jan on the EOS. My wife really wants to go to a ruin, but does not want to spend the whole day driving there and back. Can anyone tell me which port has the best ruin (most bang for the buck) but with a relatively short drive time? Thanks.

Visit Tulum when you are in Cozumel. It's a beautiful sight on the ocean. When we were in Costa Maya we took the excursion to Kohunlich - it was a long bus ride - I enjoyed the ruins and we had two excellent guides, but it was a very, very long bus ride! Next trip to Costa Maya I will see Chacchoben which I believe is less excavated but a shorter bus ride! I would love to see the ruins in Belize. When we go to Belize next year we will probably want to snorkel or go cave tubing.

Ive been to Tulum from Cozumel and Chacchoben from Costa Maya, both are great sites. Considering your post, I would recommend Chacchoben. Book through the cruise line, its about $65 per person and only a 4 hour tour which includes the 1 hour bus ride. Tulum is about 7 hours because of the ferry and the bus ride.

edited to add: You are definitely going to need something to do in Costa Maya, so this is a great place to take a long tour.

You can also do San Gervasio which is right on Cozumel Island. We rented a jeep and drove around the southern end of the island, stopped at a couple of beaches, visited San Gervasio, and then went to Carlos and Charlies adn explored the downtown shopping area. No way you could do all that without your own vehicle. The San Gervasio ruins don't have the large spectacular pyramids and other structures but they are also less crowded, are quite shady and you can walk all around and into the structures. I really liked it, but haven't been to the other ruins, so can't compare. But it's only about a 20 or 30 minute drive to the San Gervasio ruins from the port, and no ferry ride over to the mainland, as for the other ruins. Good luck. We loved Cozumel.

Ive also been to the San Gervasio ruins as well, via a Jeep that we rented. I also liked them. Like the post above me, I agree that they are not as impressive as the larger sites on the mainland, but I still thought it was interesting and the site itself is rather nice... shady too. Renting a Jeep is a great way to see the island of Coz, I highly recommend it.

Im thinking of going on the one in Costa Maya CHACCHOBEN MAYAN. I've read several posts here saying it's a 1 hour bus ride. But looking at the itenary, it says 90 mins bus ride. And the tour is only 4 hours! Which doesn't leave much room to look. Can someone please confirm if it's a 90 mins or 60 mins trip? Will be booking via Princess Cruise.

The one in Tulum sounds interesting but it says 45 mins ferry and 1 hour ride.. I think that's too long for a one way. and it's too much money as well. $100 for 7 hours.

Has anyone been to the one in Belize?
"A Tale Of Two Cities
Experience a thousand years of history on a tour that travels from the ancient Mayan site of Altun Ha to the streets of Belize City, the nation’s old capital. Board your air-conditioned transportation at the tender dock for the approximately one-hour drive from Belize City to Altun Ha. " $52 & 4.5 hours

It's by far the cheapest of the 3 and least travel time.
My priority is "nice" ruins but not too long traveling... HELPPPPPPPPPPP

Chacchoben was 45-60 minutes one way. We toured the site for close to 2 hours, which was a good enough amount of time. The trip to Tulum is nice, but it really does chew up most of your day in Coz. Both sites are worth the trip if you are interested in that sort of thing.

Edited to add: In case this would matter or help you to make a decision... you can climb on the ruins at Chacchoben, but not the Tulum ruins.

Natalia.. I was just reading your post earlier about the ruins.
I'm now decided for Costa Maya based on the what you said. Can you tell me more about the bus that you were saying (buy tickets next to the complex). Where exactly is this ticket booth? Is this government run? reliable? (don't want to miss the ship), how much? (Princess charging $65/4hours). Is taking this bus roundtrip? flexible hours? Please help me out.. thank you so much.

We took in the Chaccoben ruins in Costa Maya in Nov. It took about an hour to get there and was well worth it. Our guide was good but a little too chatty. The ruins are really neat. There's just a bit of climbing to get to the first plateau but it's worth it. On the way back the guide passed out cups of Sol beer or Pepsi.

We've tried twice to go to the ruins at Tulum. The first time, we were given the wrong time to meet the tour and it left without us (we got a full refund); the second time, big swells voided the entire tendering process, so no one went anywhere. So we've decided to give up on Tulum--even though it is said to be the biggest and the best. We did see the ruins at Belize. This involved a tender trip and a long bus ride, made pleasant by a pleasant, knowledgeable, and down to earth guide. We saw this two years ago, and the site was not overrun -- in fact, we were the only group up there, which made the guide's folklore and ghost stories all the more interesting. Wear comfortable shoes, cool clothing, a hat, and take lots of water -- it is boiling hot--our group scurried from one shady spot to another. You can climb to the top of one of the ruins (or you could when we were there). The site was in a state of being excavated, so you could see where some of the ruins just look like grassy hills-- once you know what to look for, however, you can easily tell land features from covered ruins -- kind of cool. The town of Belize itself, while interesting to see from the bus, offers little of interest for tourists -- only the area near the dock has a few shops and cafes. Anyway, I guess this is a long-way of saying the best ruin is the one you can get to!
