We left from Whittier, AK in 2004 on the Coral Princess. We cruised across Prince William Sound. It wasn't cruising close to the shoreline. I don't know how Carnival does it, but I would think a cruise tour on one of the companies you mentioned would be a more of a tour than what you would have on the Spirit.
