Why are all these people going "Overboard"?

What is the deal with all these people falling/jumping off the ships? Lately it seems like someone goes overboard every week. Maybe it has always been like that, but never public knowledge. Who knows? And I never hear a follow-up story to what really happened. I think the cruiselines need to press charges and fine these idiots for wasting everyones time, resources, and manpower.

It is indeed very strange, it came as a shock to me when we had to sit through 11 hours of search and rescue on the Carnival Legend, but in the end, its just that there are a lot of crazy people in this world, and add alcohol to that and you never know what will happen!

Actually, it's very seldom that this happens. I think these idiots are either too drunk to care and put themselves in jeopardy, or they just want to have their '15 minutes of fame'. Jerks.

Here's an interesting breakdown. These figures cover all cruise lines world wide.

1995, 1 incident
1996, 1 incident
1997, 1 incident
1998, 4 incidents
1999, 2 incidents
2000, 7 incidents
2001, 5 incidents
2002, 4 incidents
2003, 9 incidents
2004, 12 incidents
2005, 13 incidents (14 persons)
2006, 22 incidents
2007, 3 incidents (4 persons) so far including this most recent one.

When you consider the millions of people who cruise every year not that many go missing. If people use some good common sense and don't do foolish things, they'll be just fine.

Holy cow that rate is increasing rapidly... I wonder if that correlates directly to the amount of cruise ship passengers each year, do you have that information also, Mbandy?

Ya know jetblue I don't have any precice figures but you can bet that the substantial increase in cruise passengers over the past few years does play a major part.

Anybody who's been on a cruise ship knows you cannot just "fall off". Either the person is suicidal or just plain stupid.

I read on a different site that the couple that fell off were doing the "I'm the King Of The World" stunt on their balcony. If it's true, this was stupidity.

A whole lot of just plan alcohol induced stupidity. It is a ship. it is moving, get so drunck you can't stand up straight don't go near the rail, it's a ship it's moving over wavy water, come on. ANd, media loves making a big deal out of thing. Haven't you notice in the news drunk people getting hit by cars, drivingthier cars the wrong way on freeways killing them selves and other, falling off subway platform, etc.THese people also fall overboard. Heck, we have a marked hugh rock pier at the entrance to the port and every other year some druck person runs full tilt into it. Pat
