Ah shucks. Doggone it, I was ready to give the Miss Piggy and Steve Martin responses from the original Muppet Movie. "We love the orange." "Throw out that old stuff, we want the new wine." "August was a good vintage." But, Barbara has nailed it 100 percent.
When you are ordering wine, it is for you and yours exclusively. Don't worry about the others at your table. The wine steward (see, I didn't try to spell "sommelier"), will gladly take their order for wine.
On one cruise, we had a young couple who decided to treat everyone to a glass during dinner. To repay, we ordered champagne for the table the next evening. It was a table for six so one bottle just fit the bill. We gave up on trying to meet the tastes of everyone at our table, champagne is suitable for any festive occasion and a cruise certainly fits that bill.
I really like the strong red wines, e.g., cabernet souveneir (sp) and most people don't. I do not like mild white wines. For this reason, I am glad not to share wine with the table mates.
The wait staff, and your tablemates, will be very comfortable with you ordering wine for yourself. On a cruise, you kind of have to ask the following sequence of question,
"Is this person paying for my trip? "
The answer is "NO" and the next question is,
"Why am I worried about what he/her thinks?"
Do what you want to do. Order what you want to order. Every other passsenger on the ship also has a creditcard and they can do what they want to do. Now, I am not suggesting that you be inhospitable or nasty to anyone.
However, the cruise is your vacation and make sure you make yourself have a good time.
