Zuiderdam ....Exec Chef

I mentioned on one of the threads (don't remember which) that Exec Chef Mike Mahn was disembarking for his vacation last week....and he did. Happily enjoying his well earned vacation :)

I had heard rumors that Chef John Mulvaney would be his replacement but have learned he is on Rotterdam and Exec Chef Franz Schaunig has replaced Chef Mike on Zuiderdam. I am sure we have probably enjoyed Chef Schaunig's culinary creations on one "dam" ship or another but do not know him and cannot even place his "face". I'll be interested to hear "dining comments" to see if he has upheld the very high level Chef Mahn had raised dining to on Zuiderdam.

S7S, I don`t recognise his name either. Looked over some past papers that I have kept from different ships and don`t see him mentioned, could he be "new"?....jean

I did a quick search on Google and his name came up as executive chef in a review of the Zaandam from 2000. Inquiring minds had to know...

That's interesting "gatorkate".....Thanks for the info. I would never have thought that simply entering his name in a google search would yield that info.

I think that's great you pointed this out.....I'm going to have fun trying other HAL names I know and see what "pops up". Thanks. :)

Hi S7S, a friend of mine who is a long time HAL cruiser told me that Franz Schaunig has been an executive chef with HAL for over 20 years, and has had extensive training in many parts of the world so as to bring to the ships the excellent food he is known for....jean

Thanks, Jean. We must surely have dined on his cuisine but for some reason simply cannot place his name or face. ....one of those senior moments, perhaps??

sail7seas,

Just got home from the Zuiderdam today and yes the Exec Chef is Franz Schaunig and the food in the dinning room was Outstanding. As for the rest of the cruise I will save that story for another day when I can write my thoughts in a more level headed manner.

:cheers

Yup, met Franz and he is just what one might expect from the executive chef on any HAL ship; outstanding! Matter of fact, the rest of the crew was also outstanding! Hey, I'm spoiled. After 7 days on the Z in an S suite, everything else seems... well, just ordinary. Loved it Sail!
