Uses of Motion Sickness Patches

What is Motion Sickness?

Motion sickness is a state where the body reacts due to the mismatch between the expected and actual motion. Motion sickness is basically a sensory disorder of the nervous system that occurs when anyone is traveling by bus or a car. It is called the “sensory conflict hypothesis” where the sensory organ’s perception of a motion does not match with the actual motion of the media of travel. There is a conflict between the actual and the perceived ones and that causes problems like nausea, vomiting, headache, sleepiness and so on. Complications may increase up to dehydration, lower esophageal tear, and electrolyte problems also. Basically, this motion sickness is seen in those who travel via bus, car, airplane and water vehicles. The symptoms of motion sickness may last for hours up to days.

Different Types of Motion Sickness

There are different types of motion sickness which are categorized as per the place of their occurrence. Some people suffer from car sickness which is terrestrial sickness. The main cause of this is the conflict between the signals sent to the brain by different sensory organs like the eyes and the ears. If someone is inside a moving car and is looking at an object implanted there, the eye sends a signal to the brain that the object is not moving so the car is in a stable position. But the ears send a signal to the brain collecting from the surrounding sounds that the car is moving. Now, these two contradicting signals play a major role in the case of motion sickness.

Airsickness is more or less the same as car sickness but it happens in the airplane. The passengers who are sitting beside the window may feel this at a bit higher rate whereas the passengers inside the plane may not be that much affected with it. Seasickness is also a kind of terrestrial motion sickness that generally occurs when someone is traveling by watercraft. Seasickness is a bit difficult to overcome; there is no fixed point at the water where the passenger can keep his eyes to simulate with the motion. There is one more type of motion sickness which is called centrifuge motion sickness which generally occurs due to the rotational force of any ride such as in amusement parks or spaceships.

General Treatment Procedures

The treatment procedures of motion sickness include behavioral measures as well as medications. The first measure includes some behavioral modifications during travel like looking towards the horizon, keeping the head still at a particular position and so on. Some medications are also done to treat this problem like anti-muscarinics, antihistamine, and amphetamines. Though there are medicines to treat this problem, but there are side effects of these too which can limit the use of these medicines.

Motion Sickness Patches are the Most Popular Way of Treatment

With the inception of different types of medication processes, the motion sickness patch is getting more popular day by day. These are transdermal patches that are placed on the skin so that a particular dose of medicine can be absorbed by the skin in a continuous manner and pass to the bloodstream through the skin. The advantage of this process over other traditional procedures for drug administration is that the patches release drugs with controlled doses. The medicine in the patch is covered with a porous membrane and the medicine melts due to the body heat and gets absorbed by the body.

Some Popular Usages

These transdermal patches are not only used to treat motion sickness but there are some more cases where these patches are used for treatment. The most popular treatment via these transdermal patches are the nicotine patches which are very popular in the United States. There are some hormonal patches also to treat some of the hormonal disorders. These hormonal patches are used to treat menopausal symptoms. In the case of some communicable diseases, there are patches used to treat the particular place of the infection.

Why Prescribe the Patches?

The transdermal patches are prescribed to prevent the usual symptoms of motion sickness like nausea, vomiting and so on. These patches block the functions or effects of certain natural substances like acetylcholine which works on the central nervous system. The patches contain scopolamine and are placed on such a place on the outer skin where there is no hair follicle such as behind the ears. It is advised to apply the patch at least four hours before you leave for your journey. These patches can be useful for up to 3 days. If you need more protection for more than 3 days, then you have to take the patch off from your skin and then again apply another one. It is always advised to listen to your doctor and use these patches as per his prescriptions.

Instructions to Apply these Patches

Firstly you need to wash the place where you want to apply the patch and wipe the water out properly with dry tissue so that the area is properly dried. Now you have to bring the patch out of the pouch and tear the protective strip on it so that the medicated area gets exposed. The medicated area contains adhesive and it sticks to your skin. There are certain don’t that you have to follow during the procedure of patching. First of all, you should not tear the patch. You have to take care of it when you are bathing or swimming because it may get discarded if you get a touch of the water.

Precautions Before You Use

If you have any allergic reactions to the scopolamine patches, then you need to tell your doctor immediately so that he can arrange something else for you. You have to inform your doctor if you are going through any type of prescribed or non-prescribed drugs as they can have some adverse effects on this medicine. So if you can take care of these small things, then you are free to enjoy your trip with the motion sickness patches.
