Earl - my experience through the years is that Juneau is great for whale-watching. And while I haven't done it yet (I usually have gone to the Raptor Rehab Centre in Sitka), otters are VERY playful in Sitka.

A bit off the subject, but when we were in Puerto Vallarta in March several years ago, the humpbacks were leaving for Alaska. Boats are supposed to keep a certain distance from the whales, but the whales weren't listening to the rules. We were surrounded by them - almost to the point where we could reach out and touch them. On the other hand, on our first cruise to Alaska, we not only saw humpbacks, but at one point the ship was surrounded by a large pod of Orcas. The captain stopped the ship and we watched them for almost an hour before they swam away.

Wow !! I wish I was there. thats what I want to see. To be in a small boat and to be surounded by whales. thats what I want to experience.

Shipmaven - when do the whales start moving up from the Sea of Cortez to Alaska? What is the optimum month to see them while visiting the Sea of Cortez?

Corky - the peak months for whale watching in the Sea of Cortez are November through March, with THE best months December through February. Of course, that doesn't mean you won't find marine life at other times. Yes, March is good but getting towards the end of the "season" when they start migrating north.
