First time on RCCL, have cruised Carnival & NCL. Question is, are shorts allowed in the dining rooms for the evening meal at any times outside of formal nights throughout a seven night cruise? hoping to wear golf shorts and shirts most of the time. Any thoughts would help.

I sailed RCI earlier this summer and saw many people wearing shorts to dinner. While i abhorre this practice, it seems as if while there is a "dress code" RCI, like most other lines are turning their head to such behaviour. I can tolerate jeans, t-shirts, flip flops... but shorts and bikini tops just are in poor taste.

With several other inclusive dining areas on a ship i think the MDR should remain at the minimum semi formal, or smart casual. Afterall, the dining setting is formal and elegant, why shouldn't the dress be as well??

Here is Royal Caribbean's dress code ...

There are three distinct types of evenings onboard: casual, smart casual and formal. Suggested guidelines for these nights are:
con_bulletgray_ico.gif
Casual: Sport shirts and slacks for men, sundresses or pants for women
con_bulletgray_ico.gif
Smart Casual: Jackets and ties for men, dresses or pantsuits for women
con_bulletgray_ico.gif
Formal: Suits and ties or tuxedos for men, cocktail dresses for women

As you can see, Royal Caribbean has not yet lowered their standards as Carnival has. I agree with Mr D's comments.

I would not wear shorts in the dining room, most evenings the dress code is smart casual or casual except for formal nights.

You do not want me to get into the discussion of shorts in the dining during evening dinner.

I disagree Mike. My experience with RCCL is that it's the same as Carnival. Casual means Casual to most. I saw shorts in the dining room every night with the exception of Formal night. A guideline is provided - but there are many who don't follow it.

Alas it has been a few years since I was on RCCL so it looks like maybe things have changed.

Flip flops -- Yuk! Shorts are 100% better than flip flops. Have seen people turned away from dinner on NCL for wearing shorts, though.

well.... i agree about flip flops, but being that it is a cruise... i would have to say in the environment they would be acceptable if you were wearing slacks. No one is going ot be looking at your feet unless they've got some kind of fetish anyways..

But i do not want to try dining while having to look at a woman who thinks she is a size 4 wearing skin tight shorts when she is clearly a size 14... The only cottage cheese i want to see is that which may accompany some peaches on my plate.....i shudder just thinking about it...

When I said golf shirt, I meant a collared knit shirt. Come on how hard is it to conform...slacks and a knit collared shirt? If not, just eat in the buffet.

You are not correctly stating the Royal Caribbean dress code.

that would be acceptable for smart casual maybe... but you're right that isn't considered "formal". You would need to add at the very least a sports jacket and buttondown shirt for formal. I think an everyday suit would pass as acceptable on formal night, although i would prefer tuxes myself

I've already quoted Royal Caribbean's dress code in this thread and provided a link to the dress code on Royal Caribbean's website. If you want to see what Royal Caribbean's dress code is, go back to the third post in this thread.

Otherwise, I wish people would stop stating what they think it is or should be. It is what it is and it is clearly posted for all to see.

BAH... don't sweat it Cruizer, it's not worth getting bothered about, it's small stuff, not really worht your effort really. For Sh*t's & giggles you should be telling them to dress in their boxers and take a bedsheet to wear as a cape to formal night... that would actually be funny as hell.. They could be like supper heroes even....
