I FIND PEOPLE STIFFER AND LESS FRIENDLY WHEN IN A FORMAL SETTING.
BUT EVERYONE HAS THEIR PREFERENCES, SO TO BE FAIR,
SIMILAR TO DINING CHOICES THEIR SHOULD BE A FORMAL DINING & SHOW AT ONE TIME AND A CASUAL DINING & SHOW AT ANOTHER TIME.
THIS WAY EVERYONE IS HAPPY.
ON FORMAL NIGHTS THIS END OF THE SHIP (DINING AREA & SHOW ROOM) IS MANDATORY FORMAL & THE OTHER END IS MANDATORY CASUAL.

Again my view is have respect for the cruise line rules and fellow passengers. If people can't respect that there are loads of fast food restaurants to eat. I get tired of the "I will do what I want and to hell with anyone else attitude we have now".
Again how do you think the staff feel when they put so much work in to offer you a wonderfull meal and someone turns up in shorts. But then I guess some of these people just don't care.

Having worked in the hospitality industry for many years let me ASSURE you that the staff do not care WHAT you wear as long as you are not a complaining pain in the butt and you tip well. I'm not kidding. If you have a similar employment history then you know exactly what I mean!I loved working with the public and it probaly has shaded how I look at people , I know that you shouldn't judge people by how they look because sometimes the nice looking ones were mean and disrespectful to staff ( staff are people too) and the ones who looked like "country bumkins" were far better mannered and often tipped better. I worked a very upscale resort for 5 years and then at a private yacht club and although these things are just my opinion I think they will ring true for many who have worked in any public sector.

I actually used to own a hotel and we did appreciate people dressing for dinner.
There has been a lot of silly comments made."Get over yourself", Get real". "Your cruise fantacy". When you pick up the cruise brochure it states the formal nights and dress code. If you are unwilling to accept this you should not book the cruise. Again it's selfish people saying to hell with the cruise line and other people I will do what I want. The best thing would be for all cruise lines to enforce the policy as some restaurants do. It's not a "cruise fantacy "it's a cruise fact as stated in the brochure. If people don't like it there are plenty of other options for their holidays where there is no dress code needed.
Part of being a nice person is thinking of other people not just ones self.

Well, I didn't suggest to toss out the dress code entirely! I wouldn't think of entering the dining room in shorts, or jeans, or raggedly clothes or something.
But I DO still maintain that the *insistence* that men wear tuxes, women wear ball gowns is a bit....pretentious. We've eaten in fine dining rooms with dress codes and haven't been tossed out yet, so I don't suppose we will on our next cruise either.
I'm going with my best dressed -- which are NOT fine gowns, but a silk blouse, silk dress trousers, appropriate shoes and jewelry. My husband is wearing a dark suit. If you don't like it...you could always ask to sit at a different table.

I actually wear a suite myself which I feel is still in keeping with the spirit of cruising. It's up to the cruise lines to enforce policy not cruisers. I personaly don't think people in shorts should be allowed to enter the dining rooms. There are always the buffets if people are not willing to make the effort.

Casual dress at 24hr. Buffet is quite acceptable at anytime.
