It sounds like he has a pretty tough road ahead of him for awhile, but I continue to pray that he will come through this with flying colors.

I'm sure other @ddicts will join me in wishing him a Happy Birthday next week, and we all look forward to hearing that he's back in the USA quickly to recuperate.

Jodee,

Thanks for taking the time to keep us updated. I am certain that you have been sick with worry. It is a blessing that you are able to talk with him so often, I hope that helps to ease your mind somewhat. Have confidence in the care he is getting and continue to prepare for his homecoming. Hopefully he will have a special birthday and when he returns home to his family, you can prepare an even better celebration. There are many fine organizations that will assist with his needs both overseas and at home, avail yourself of their services and please let us here at your Cruise @ddicts family know if there is anything we might be able to do to help. Prayers continue.........

Jodee, I am so sorry to read this, I didn't see it until today. It is so good that your husband is able to go there to be with him. I hope all the surgery goes well, and he heals from all of this.

When you see him, please give him a big hug for me too :) God bless...

Oh Jodee, a parents worst fears! Thank God it's not as bad as it could have been, but this is still a scary thing. I will send prayers winging their way that he recovers as fully as possible, and stays home for a long time! His service to his country is appreciated more than can be said.

Update 8/18/08

Ian had surgery #5 this morning, they pinned and plated the broken bones back together, then took a skin graft off his thigh to cover and close the open wound. His sister spoke to him for just a brief bit, he said he wasn't feeling so good, so she got off fast. His dad emailed me a picture from yesterday, he looks like he's bored to tears, he has this glint of mischief in his eyes that I know means he's thinking of how to get out of there fast!

Our hope is that after a few days of making sure that there is no infections, etc, that they will put him on outpatient status there in Germany and allow him to travel to his home base and his own apartment there in Germany. Once the sutures all come out, he will then go on convelescent leave and come home to Mom for some TLC. They will do a nerve graft on the median nerve sometime later this fall, when the arm has had time to heal and provide better support.

Wednesday is his 23rd birthday. I've made arrangements for someone to bring him a birthday cake. AND both of our US Senators have called and are going to contact him to wish him well. One of them is actually an orthopedic surgeon by trade, and he was very interested in making sure that Ian was getting the best treatment possible.

Thanks for all the good wishes. We are still hoping to go on our family Christmas Cruise, only time and $$ will tell if that pans out.

Oh dear my prayers are with your son and your family!! I will include him in our prayer group if that is ok? My brother is in Iraq and he too has also been shot at, he however narrowly escaped that only to find him a few days later in the hospital due to his humvee hitting a land mine and scrap metal shooting right thru his leg.

Scary!! Well wishes!!

Update on Ian

My, how time flys!

Ian has now had 6 surgeries on his arm, the most recent just before Thanksgiving. This surgery was to remove scar tissue that had flexors and tendons in his arm locked up so he could not move his fingers or wrist. He has been going through PT twice daily since then and reports he has more movement, but still no feeling in his fingers. He said they plan on doing nerve grafts sometime after the New Year, probably more like Feb or March. The bone still has a lot of healing to do, x-rays don't show a lot of calcifcation just yet, but that happens with young men.

We are on page 1 of the cruise tracker ! Yippee! Can't wait to pick him up at the airport in Orlando and get the holidays started.

I just wanted to take time to thank everyone for their prayers and concerns during this stressful time. I don't always post a lot, and wanted to make sure that you know that we do appreciate the thoughts and good wishes. We were very lucky this wasn't much more serious than it was, his buddy who was hurt in the same attack is still at Walter Reed.

If anyone is looking for a worthwhile organization to help out this season, please consider Soldiers Angels, especially the chapter in Germany. These volunteers help provide clothes, activities, and more to the wounded who come into Landstuhul hospital before they are sent on to other hospitals. They really need help right now, a group in CA that was donating clothes, blankets and other items had EVERYTHING stolen from a trailer this past week, just before it was to be shipped out to Germany.

Thanks C@ friends, and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to All!

Get Well Leave? Ugh, I would want him to have Come Home for Good and Never Leave with his arm in that shape! But I think like a Mom, so....

Not fun wounds to deal with, but as others have said, it could have been so much more worse. Sorry you can go too, I know he must be in your every thought. Prayers he has a successful healing and that dad finds him in pretty good shape.
