New Orleans Hotel anyone

I am leaving on the Conquest April 4. Would like input on hotels. How about ones close enough to walk to the ship? Need one not too pricey as we're average folk and have saved to give my parents a gift of a cruise and need a nice one without being too expensive. Where are you staying? Why? When you going? Would love to stay in the French district or Garden, but they appear to be quite expensive. I'll do that another time. Never been here before. Don't figure we'll spend much time in the room anyway with so much to see and do there. THANKS, Pat :newbie here.

We stayed at Spring Hill Suites in 2002 before boarding the Inspiration. It is 2 blocks up from the Julia Pier, reasonable rates for being downtown, off street parking and large rooms. In 2003 before boarding the Grandeur we stayed at the Hilton and had the most unfortunate stay in a hotel room. Expensive, broken shower that had the ceiling leaking from the shower above, dirty linens, used toiletries and they compensated by paying our 20.00 parking fee. Read my reviews of the Inspiration and Grandeur for me details. The Hilton is attached to the Riverwalk and the Spring Hill is within walking distance. We prefer to stay as close to the Riverwalk as possible because for us it is exciting to see the ships the night before. Good luck and have fun! Nan

Thanks to both of you. I agree, with Nan I would really enjoy watching the ships come in too! Curious? will you try Hilton again because of the location? Is the Holiday Inn situated where you can watch the ships? Thanks again, look forward to reading these responses each day!!!

cant answer the question about seeing the ships come in,as I havent stayed there yet. the holiday inn is accross the street from the dock/convention cntr. my guess would be probably not, unless you had a room on the top floors.

We stayed in the Holiday Inn across from the convention center and it was an easy walk to the ship- we had 2 small suitcases on wheels and maybe took us 10 min to walk. If the convention center is open (wasn't for us) you could walk through it making it only a 5 min walk. You can't see the ships but we could see the notoriuos Carnival funnel. The Holiday Inn (I think its an Express or Select) was very clean and we had a nice corner room. I have also stayed at the Springhill Suites which is 2 blocks away- very nice rooms. You could walk from there also to the ship as long as you didn't have lots of luggage.

Our room at the Hilton did give us a nice view of the river, but you are up pretty high and it was difficult to look right down on the ship. Will I ever stay there again? NO WAY. Checking in was a night mare too. Computers were down and there were very long lines waiting to check in. I am sure all this could go wrong anywhere but I guess I just expected a dash more considering what we paid. We had traveled 24 hours in the car and couldn't get into to our room for 2 hours, then couldn't shower for supper because of the leak. We booked to blocks up at the Spring Hll again.

Our favorite thing to do is get some quick food from the center of the Riverwalk and perch ourselves outside and watch all of the activity on the river. We were able to watch our ship from the year before leave in the dark with all the the lights shining, it was exciting!

We stayed at the Riverwalk Wyndham directly across the street from the pier. It was close, but we were not able to walk easily to it. We had to walk through Riverwalk and down several flights of stairs to get to it. It would have been easier to have used a taxi, especially with all the luggage!!

Hey PLG,
We just returned from Conquest Christmas cruise. We left out of NO also. We stayed at Garden District Hotel. It is across the street from the street car pick up. That is the way to get around NO. You could take a cab to the port it's not that far. They might also have a shuttle, you'll have to ask. We booked through Hotels.com for $69 a night. I thought that was reasonable. The hotel was just fine for 1 night and for the price. You'll find NO is a smelly city, and unless your a partier then avoid it. By the way the Conquest is Beautiful. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for advice. NO, we are not partiers, but we are flying in on Friday anyway to relax and site see during the day. Smelly, huh! I've read about the garden district, but assume there is a motel called Garden District. I am suprised at the price you got, most the prices I see for 4/4 are over a $100 a night. I'll check this out. Can wait to get on board the Conquest! Thanks again, PLG

We are staying at the Drury Inn on Poydras street. I've heard some very good things about this hotel. They have a rooftop pool and a hot breakfast buffet included in the rate. It is about 4 blocks from the French Quarter and about 6 blocks from Riverwalk. The last time I was in NO, it wasn't smelly. The food is delicious, there are many things to see and a lot of history to learn about. Try a muffaletta or a Po'boy when you get there.

Hello!
Does New Orleans have a funny odor? Funny, been there twice in the last 2 years, have not noticed anything.....?

May I ask the price of the Drury Inn Irish Girl? I already booked at the Spring Hill but I like the idea of breakfast buffet included in the price!

We are paying $169/night for a 2 room suite. I think the regular rooms are $149/night. We are really excited about it after reading the reviews.

That is for a suite and a breakfast buffet is included? That is a good deal for being downtown! One more question, do they have off street parking and if so do you know the fee for that? Thanks for the info! :) Nan

I don't know about the parking situation at that hotel. I know parking is a premium in New Orleans. You could call the hotel and ask them. Their number is 1-800-325-0720. They also have free high speed internet available in all rooms, microwaves and refigerators in all rooms, FREE evening beverages and snacks (Mon-Thur 5:30-7:00 pm), FREE local phone calls, iron/ironing board, hairdryers, in-room coffee and much more. When I checked tripadvisor.com, this hotel gets really good reviews.

Seldom hear of free beverages and snacks! I think I have been to one hotel in my life that had something like that. I am checking on our map to compare locations. Thanks for all your input! Nan

Can anyone tell me a bit about this River walk in New Orleans for the Conquest? I pictured a side walk along the river? What has the casino to do with boarding the Conquest? Maybe this was temporary? Last time I cruised there was a terminal and all ship business was done there. I know ALl will become clear once we get there, but I just love new input, it like cruise-foreplay :jump .
