Well,
This asthmatic for 60years, his allergic wife, and three allergic sons sure appreciate it when smokers do follow the rules. Sleeping in a room that has housed a couple of heavy smokers is nearly impossible. Being irritable because you want a smoke can not be compared to being irritable because you can not breathe inside, and stepping onto the balcony gets both the smoke and often ashes (hot) from inconsiderate neighbors.
Doctors says the incidence of asthma is increasing and if it is then smokers days might be numbered anyway. I never have figured out why we fight to do something that only has negative consequences for our health anyway.

Is any of this my business? Nope. It's YOUR life. As long as you don't force ME to eat a Big Mac, who am I to tell you what to do? Yes, there are inconsiderate smokers, just as there are obnoxious loud people. bad perfume, and body odor. We should only be dealing with those situations which affect an innocent party directly. Having well ventilated, smoking "sections" in adult bars and lounges is the way to go. Smokers on the balcony next to you? Simply put your head around and ask they wait to smoke outside until you aren't there. I doubt you spend your entire cruise on your balcony How about a little cooperation, instead of militant rules and regulations? How about we all try to find fair compromises instead of demanding the world be OUR WAY OR THE HIGHWAY. Just a thought.

Smoking is not a right. Breathing is. As soon as the smoke affects another's ability to breathe a line needs to be drawn.

Driving is legal too. However, it is a privilege, not a right. Show me in the Constitution where there is a right to smoke. There is a right to life - there is no right to smoke.
I never said anything about my way or the highway. I just pointed out that when your privilege interferes with other's rights, it is the privilege that will loose. As a judge said one time, your right to swing your fits ends at my nose.
Smoking is not a right. If it was, cities, airplanes and work places could not ban it. When is the last time you saw a ban on breathing?

heres an opinion from someone who has been on both sides of the smoking issue.
1st of all, i smoked for years. and i enjoyed it. I would always book a smoking room. That is until my son was diagnosed with asthma. Then i quit. I have been smoke free for one and one half years, but in the meantime was told i have copd from years of smoking. Its funny how now just the smallest amount of cigg. smoke can send me and my son running for our inhalers. Its very debilitating to say the least.
The problem is.. you cant take away others rights. i think it should be arranged somehow that the smokers are on one end of the ship. it wont eliminate the problem, but we cant take their rights away.
Restaurants should be smoke free.
public rooms except bars and casinos should be smoke free.
The casinos and bars are for smokers, sorry. If i choose to go i take my inhaler. It sucks, but what can you do? Until there are real changes made in how people think nothing will be done.

not to be mistaken in what i just said. Although i do believe smokers have rights, so do non smokers and sometimes the smokers take away our right to be cough free and breathing, lol.
The best choice for everyone is to quit.
But. this is a personal choice.
Probaly what will make a person quit is when someone they love is struggling to breathe or they are.

I noticed when I was on the Inspiration a few weeks ago, that the Lido decks were full of smokers. It seemed no matter where we went, someone was smoking next to us. I always was under the impression that one side of the deck was smoking and one was no smoking but this didn't seem to be the case. I noticed a few smokers were kind enough to walk to the rail while they smoked then returned to their deck chair after putting out their smoke.
We left the piano bar one night due to the heavy smoke, but noticed the next time that, the area at the piano had no smoking signs posted. This is where we sat then next night. That night those at the bar that wanted to smoke moved to the back of the Piano Bar to light up. It does make it rather uncomfortable for non smokers to go into the bars and lounges due to the smoke. I had trouble doing this at home also, not just on a cruise, so not picking on the cruise lines.
We all have rights, this is what's great about the country we live in. Smokers should have a place that they can smoke but the Non smokers should also be able to enjoy some of the public areas without dealing with the smoke. LOL guess they can't make everyone happy all the time.
