Stolen Item Carnival Celebration 9-05-05 Question/Advice

Just returned yesterday from The 9-05-05 Celebration out of Jacksonville. Here's the story!

Friday afternoon I placed my new digital camera on my stateroom desk/dressing table to charge the battery. Husband and I went out to dinner without the camera. Noticed while we were packing later that night that I didn't "see" my camera but didn't panic because I just figured my husband had packed it and didn't remember (he is THAT type). Therefore NOTHING was reported to the Pursers Desk. However, after arriving home and unpacking ALL my luggage, my camera is NOWHERE to be found.

I am in no way insinuating (sorry spelling) that our cabin steward took my camera, (after all they would be 1st suspect) and we have never had a problem with anything being missing on a cruise BUT someone (not sure who) picked up my husbands tux while we were at dinner and they possibly could be suspect or perhaps the door to our cabin was left open by mistake for anyone to enter.

My question is do we have any recourse at all or are we SOL? That camera was brand spanking new......only had for 2 months and still have all receipts. If we possibly do, whom do I contact?

Just FYI, we didn't have cruise insurance because this was such an inexpensive cruise.

I am already prepared to replace my camera myself but thought it couldn't hurt to ask for advice just in case!

Thanks for all replies!

Sharon

OUCH! I hate to lose stuff like that! email them at grelations@carnival.com with as much detail as possible. The ships keep a log of found items, if no one claims it after I think 6 months, the items are sold at a 'lost and found sale' and the money is given to the United Way.

Sadly, without insurance you are pretty much stuck. You can still e-mail carnival, and hopefully your camera will show up.

I think you are SOL too- when stewards are cleaning hte cabins the doors are left open for any length of time. I doubt very much that ship personal took it-- to lose their job for takings tuff like that.

I think when the steward was cleaning the cabin..and left to get something-- someone went in there and took it.

for future readers to this post--- never ever pack your camera away.. take it with you in your carry on. thats with anyhing valuble.

Aaaaaaaah, thanks for the replies! That's really what I expected to hear....:( Tough lesson learned......Too many cocktails and good sense goes out the window so to speak.......I always had my camera with me except for this one time and was already at dinner when I realized it was still in the cabin.

I was wondering what all of you do when you go out to sunbathe or just out and about on the ship and you don't want to tote your camera. How many put it away in a drawer or cabinet? How many put it in the safe, if it fits? What do you do with it?

I put my camera in the safe. My notebook computer is locked in either my luggage or with the secruity cable I take with me. I do not leave the cabin (or ANY hotel room) with any valuable in the open.

Good piece of advice for me to hear also. I've put my money and diamond necklace in the safe but always left my digital sitting on the dressing table. I never thought of any staff member taking it. I also lock our passports and I.D. in the safe.

How big (L x W x H) is the safe? I'm bringing both a digital camera (WON'T fit in a pocket... an SLR-sized camera) and a video camera.

They're about 12" x 8". If your video camera is one of the newer, smaller ones, all of them should fit. Otherwise, you may have to leve the video camera out. You might want to bring a security cable like Cruizer mentioned...

Things that won't fit in safe that I don't want to disappear, I always store in a closed cabinet, so it won't be easy to pick up and remove.

The security cable works like a bike chain. Which means you need something to lock it to. However, for notebook computers they are specialized. There is a special slot on the notebook computer that will accept a security cable designed for notebook computers. The rest works like a bike chain. Basically you loop it around something and hope no one brought bolt cutters with them.

And I have to add the obvious of boo boos that you never think you'll do... but I did.... after way too much fun on a rum punch excursion I left my credit card on the "make up" table. yep my fault completely... so is the credit ding for unauthorized use in south america for a washer and several other items. Seems obvious I know... but for those newbies out there, you can't place that trust... yep mine was "accidental" and we did report it to carnival so the could track the steward if there were additional complaints... but our fault... totally! so no drawers, only the safe please!!!!! just fyi.

**UPDATE**

I emailed Guest Relations at Carnival on Monday which was suggested that I do and as of today have heard no response. Have to say that I am dissapointed in the leval of Customer Service. At least someone at Carnival could email back to say that they could be of no assistance if that is the case.

In any event, I replaced my camera yesterday. The model that I had has been discontinued but I got the one they recommend as a replacement.

Thanks to all for your comments. The tips provided here will help others not to have the same thing happen. I learned a lesson both about valuables taken on board and also about Carnival.

Sharon, we always lock cameras, jewelry and wallets in the safe. We use a cable lock on the lap top. Regarding the loss of your camera - if you have homeowners insurance, more than likely it will cover the loss of your camera - I know mine covers loss of personal items while I am travelling.
