Let's think about this one second, Let's temporarily postpone maybe 14 or 1500 passengers vacation start because a handful failed to take into consideration what might happen. MMM my thought is that the ship leaves on time. Always plan for the unexpected.

Glad we planned for mishaps in advance. We drove from the Inland Empire to LAX and stayed at a hotel next to the airport just in case the So Cal traffic had any of its' usuall major accidents. We also flew in to Louisiana the day before in case there was any problem with the flight. Turns out there was. We sat in the plane for an extra two hours because lightning had struck with 3 miles of the plane. The forced the airline to leave our luggage outside... uncovered... for the extra two hours. Some clothes got wet. Had that have been a worse storm where we could have been delayed for hours longer, and we hadn't aimed at arriving the day before, we would have been in a similar situation. All of us had our passports, even though they weren't mandatory. We also had our birth certificates and copies of about everything. If you keep cruising, some day this will happen to you.

Well it appears the 'survivor's' bad luck continues.

6 of us have been planning a Jan 1st Triumph Cruise since about April of this year.

We just found out Friday that JT and I will not be able to go.

JT is being called up for Active Duty in the Navy on December 27th, just 3 days before we were going to leave on the cruise.

We are so upset that we will miss this cruise with our group. It's heartbreaking.

We will find out tomorrow if he can leave the country before his active duty starts and if he can, we will book a different cruise or something else in December. Maybe we'd better stay away from cruising....the ship might sink or something....

I'm very proud that he is going to serve our country, but just really ticked off about the timing.

Although it is with a sad heart, JT is embarking on the most courageous journey of his lifetime. Thank your dear JT, we SUPPORT you with all of our hearts here.
My short story...
I always imagined what it would be like to see a long line of soldiers. I always imagined I would thank them one by one. However,
A group of 12 booked a trip to Cabo. We arrived at DFW, rode the escalator upstairs to check our bags, looked up and, BAAMMM!
A long line of US soldiers in brown. I was so incredibly shocked, that while they parted their line for us, I wanted us to part our line for them. I have always wanted to thank those in uniform for their loyalty and honor. I never imagined that the opportunity would come in such simple circumstances.
As I waited in line, I watched and waited, and watched and waited, and never did a thing.
Once we checked our bags and got through security, we headed to the closest bar to grab a beer. Behind us sat two soldiers. I watched, and wanted so bad to talk to them. I guess I was so afraid of sounding like a fool, I never did anything.
Here is my chance, if I had the opportunity to do it again, I wouldn't be shocked, I would admire, and acknowledge. More than anything, I want everyone to know that whether you like it, love it, or leave it, its the men in brown (or green, or blue), that protect our country, and make it the great nation it is.
GOD BLESS AMERICA & GOD BLESS YOU JT!

Thank you Helen233 & longhorn&aggie
JT appreciates your support. He is darn proud to be serving his country.
longhorn, most service men & women these days do not mind if you thank them. They usually feel like they are just doing their jobs, but it is very nice when people show support to them.

Thank you again!

We are planning to cruise before he leaves and probably again when he gets back!

Happy sailing,
~Masq

Well 4 of the survivor 9 are on the Triumph right now.
For those of us in the states that get terrible winter weather.... we always hope that our cruise vacations will be during the worst storm of the year. lol
Well, here at home, we have 14 inches of snow that came this week.... and they missed it. Darn it... we were supposed to be on that cruise and missing all of this fun too. lol
It was pretty nice weather here when we cruised on the Windjammer in mid December. boo hoo.
Plus, my dear hubby missed all of this fun too.... he's training right now south of here, so he's been enjoying warm weather.

Happy Sailing. :)

masq - wow what a story. I couldn't put it down. I didn't realize this happened so long ago. I was directed here (i don't use this board anymore because Princess has a kick ass board on critic) from critic and loved the story. You should try and have it published somehow. Maybe a travel magazine will put it in print.

I do have to tell you 9 one thing, it is a vacation that will never be forgotten. This will turn out to be your most memorable vacation ever. The ones that have problems are always that way. Hope you have happy traveling in the future.

Thanks Waterrats. :)
It was a great adventure. It really sucked at the time, but all in all, we made some life long friends and learned some very hard lessons. I'm sure we still don't know everything we should about traveling, but this helped. :)
JT and I plan to do a lot more traveling when he returns from Kuwait!!
Thanks again and glad you enjoyed reading about our adventure.

Wow.

I was thinking about getting insurance this time but after reading that story, I'm looking into it.

I've never had to fly to a cruise before since we live in Texas and have always left out of Houston or Galveston. One time, we drove all the was for San Antonio to Boca Raton in Florida in 26 hours because it was cheaper to drive than to fly. We stayed in there for the night before the cruise because we were exhusted.

I've recently moved away from TX but my family still lives there so we've planned another cruise in August. The plan is that I am going to fly to SA and three days later, we're all going to drive up to Galveston. I know that is enough time before the flight but I am worried about my luggage.

Also I have only flown two round trips and only one that I remember. I also have a connecting flight which I have never done before. Thank goodness I'm connecting in Chicago and not in Memphis!!!

We all got our passports for our last cruise which stopped at Belize. Here I thought our Belize story was great but y'all top us by far.

First, the captain canceled the port because of the high seas. The cave tubing was the high light of the cruise so we were really upset about not being able to go. A few hours later though, they did let us go.

Our bus that was taking us the the tubing broke down five times total on the the way there and back. On the fifth time, it wouldn't start back up like it had the previous times. We were on a Carnival sponsered cruise so it was ok, we were going to make it back on time or they would wait for us. We already had a shortened day there because of the delay in getting off the ship. We waited on the side of the road for something like an hour or so which must've really sucked for people who aren't used to warm weather like us Texans are. We got some funny photos of my Dad and Uncle "showing some leg" to hitch a ride and we saw some alligator (or crocodile, I get them confused) tracks. Eventually, we got picked up by another bus and we got the last last last tender onto the ship.

That is nothing compared to what y'all went thru! That's incredible how you made it onto the ship.

Well we are giving it another go with Carnival.....
We are booked for the Carnival Glory for New Year's Eve.
It will only be four of the nine survivors this time. :-(.... but we will make the best of it.

I'll be on that cruise too! May we all make it in time!

It's my second cruise, and I'm going with two first-timers...one lives in Florida, one is coming from Oregon, and I'm coming from the Carolinas.

We are ALL coming in the night before and staying in either Orlando or Port Canaveral (I have hotel reservations both places!)...we'll decide in a few weeks which one to cancel.

I've been reading your story in bits and pieces all day...I think I would have just plopped down and -cried-. And then gotten mad and determined!

I don't know about August, but in the winter I would take Memphis over Chicago. Unfortunately Memphis usually means Northwest, and Northwest does not have a very good reputation.

Hey Mas
You kind of got lucky with that Glory cruise on new years eve,, we got cancelled out of our 1/07 cruise that following week. Probably what made us decide never again on Carnival after that and our previous Celebration cruise.

Dukebluebell - excellent. I have not even checked this board yet for a roll call for the New Year's eve sailing. I'll have to jump on if there is one. :)
Yes, we were all very upset and shed some tears along the way, but we were so determined to get on that boat. lol
My husband and I are going to risk it this time and fly the same day as the cruise.... I know after this story and what we've been thru we are nuts. lol The big difference here is the first port. Key West is less than a 400 mile drive from Orlando (we checked the map) lol .... with no boarder crossings.
The other couple we are going with... are flying in a day early ....they just don't want the stress if the unthinkable happens. lol

Cruizer - you know we thought the same thing about Memphis... no big deal to fly thru there in the winter. Big mistake!! I am doing my best to find a flight down to Orlando that goes thru Dallas and not on Northworst.) If I have to book thru Chicago, I may change my mind and fly on the 30th.

Jim - sorry to hear that Carnival cancelled the Jan 7th sailing you had booked. We actually considered that one too. Our friends booked on the Elation out of Galveston for New Year's day and with Katrina and the moving around Carnival did.... that cruise was cancelled. She got $100 per person credit toward a different cruise. I hope you got something like that. I didn't want to use Carnival again, but they had the best price for where we wanted to go so that's why we picked them again.... I want to try Celebrity and RCL. They sound very nice.

I take it from this post that you are not aware that Key West is part of the Conch Republic.

How about Atlanta (Delta) and might I suggest Melbourne (Florida - airport code MLB). It is much closer to the port than Orlando is.

The conch republic.... oh my. I hope the only weapon they carry is a margarita and they take my Yankee passport.)
I had no idea about what happend there in '82...of course I was only 11 and probably didn't care about what the governmet was doing. I'm sure they were very serious back then, but I'm glad they can joke and have a good time with it now. :)

I have been looking at Delta and American. Delta has been a lot higher priced. We will probably book American or Midwest Airlines.... I love Midwest airlines, but I don't like the idea of connecting thru Wisconsin in the winter either. lol
I think I priced flying to Melborne and it was more than Orlando, but I will check there again.

Happy sailing,
Masq
