What about you?

My mom and I are taking this one too. She lives in St. Louis, MO and I am in Santa Monica, CA. She has taken this cruise before, but on another ship. She said it was amazing.

Re: Zaandam April 21st

Hi Angie,

My wife Virginia is from LA. We'll be stopping over a day in LA to visit a relative. We know Santa Monica a bit too. Nice area. After LA, we zipping off to Kansas City (close to St Louis, somewhat ) to visit my Mother. Then we zoom to Port Canaveral to catch the cruise. We're really looking forward to the Canal cruise. We haven't figured out our land excursions yet. Any suggestions?

I was reading up on them, but haven't decided ourselves. I know that in some of the ports they say you really want to take them for safety. Other places, like Puerto Vallarta, etc. you are almost better off on your own.

Santa Monica is the best. I recently moved her from St. Louis. I relocate for my job. Grew up in St. Louis. Are you getting off the ship in LA or going on? We are ending in LA which is nice for me since I am home.

Have you sailed HAL before? Where are you staying on the ship?

Hi all, we are a retired couple, love a good time. Have cruised HAL 10 times and other lines 10 times. Looking forward to some new ports on this cruises. We will fly in a day early to Orlando and stay overnight. We are doing the 21 day to Vancouver. BTW we are from Columbus Ohio, I am originally from England....jean

Jean,

Welcome aboard (so to speak). We are flying into Orlando the night before as well. Just don't want any hassles that day. We are getting off in LA since that is where I live. We booked the hotel with HAL, so I am not sure where we are staying. I think this will be an incredible cruise and am counting the days.

Re: Zaandam Aprril 21st

We also booked the hotel with HAL, chose the airport hotel but don`t know which one yet. Shouldn`t be too long before we get our docs. Usually get them 6-7 weeks prior to sailing....jean

Do you know how many formal nights there are on this trip? I know normally two for a 7 day cruise, but wasn't sure for a longer cruise. Not sure what to pack! Yipes!

I`ve been wondering the same thing. On a 14 day we took with HAL, the docs said 3 formals but when we got on board they had changed it to 4! I just wore something twice! I think they`ll have only 4 or 5 on this cruise as it is so port intensive. Anyone have their docs yet? We are leaving on March 10th for three weeks in England and Spain and was hoping our docs come in before we leave....jean

Aloha Angie and Jean,

Hello again. We just got back from 2 weeks on the mainland. Whoops, I forgot, you guys are "mainlanders". :)

We spent a week in northern California and a week in Vegas. We had rotten weather the whole time, but had fun anyway. I figure that since we had bad weather for this trip, we should get great weather for the Zaandam cruise.

This will be our third time on a HAL ship. We got our docs yesterday and they do say 4 formal nights!

I'm no expert on proper attire. I used to own a bunch of suits, etc., but since we retired to Hawaii, I live in shorts & sandals! On our previous HAL cruises, I've just taken a sport coat and dress slacks for formal dinners. I've never felt out of place. There are always a few men in tuxs, most in suits and sport coats and a few in casual. Then there's always this one weird guy wearing a tie-dye t-shirt and blue jeans! :) Just kidding. The women are dressed in similar fashion to the men. OK, maybe the women dress a bit spiffier than the guys.

Jean - London and Spain sounds great. You'll have to tell us all about it.

What do you think about all of us meeting on the aft deck when we sail to have a drink and get acquaiinted?

Lawrence,

Sorry the weather was so bad for your trip. Hope you are right and that means good weather for the cruise. It is 85 today in LA and was beautiful all weekend.

Thanks for the update on formal nights. I think I will just not go too fancy. Maybe dress up one night for fun. You know how us girls are :)

I think meeting would be nice. My aunt and uncle just booked as well for this trip. Let's call it a plan. Let me know what times work for you. We are boarding early since we will be in Orlando the night before.

Look forward to meeting you.

Anna,

glad to meet you. There are four of us going. Mom (late 50s), myself (mid 30s), aunt and uncle (mid 50s). We are fun loving group.

My mom did this cruise and loved it years ago. Some different ports, but she thought the canal was worth seeing again.

Look forward to meeting you on the ship! I have sailed HAL before but never this long.

Hi Angie ,
Loking forward to meeting you and your famliy, it's going ot be an awesome cruise, I've sailed form Sydney, Australia to Las Angeles for 19 days and it was incredible, we didn't want to get off the ship! I've docked in Aruba twice and loved it, did the Jolly Pirates sail and snorkel, had a blast, great fun! This will be my 4th time through the Panama, Santa Cruz Huatulco, Mexico is new to me as well as Guatemala, Costa Rica is amazing, beautiful rainforests. As you can tell I'm getting excited and can't wait. We will be booking our shore excursions next! Talk to you soon,Anna

Aloha Angie, Jean and Anna,

Virginia and I are ready to go! It's a great idea to meet in the Aft deck Lido during sailaway. I'm easy to spot, I wear glasses and I've got the same amount of fuzz on my chin as on my head! :)

We're also flying into Orlando the day before. We're going to pickup a rental car and drive over to Port Canaveral (gives us a chance to stop at the local Costco and pickup a few dozen bottles of champagne! ok, maybe only 3 or 4.). Then we're staying at the Raddisson in Port Canaveral. Our documents say boarding starts at 3:00pm, so we were planning to show up about 2:30pm. Should we be planning to get there earlier?

I went to St. Louis to visit my mom and got my documents. We are staying at the Marriott World Center the night before the cruise.

We think we are going to check in around 12n. I know it says 3p, but usually I think sometime mid-morning you can board.

We are starting to talk about shore excursions. My aunt and uncle willl most likely not do many. I like to try some different things, so I may drag my mom along. I think the biggest worry for my relatives is the bar bill! HAH!

Aft deck Liby during sailaway will be great. I am about 5'10", blonde and 36. Mom is shorter, blonde/gray hair , aunt about the same size and my uncle has curly blonde hair and wears glasses.
