Common Challenges and Mishaps That Can Happen on Cruise Vacations

Cruise vacations are often seen as the ultimate getaway, offering relaxation, adventure, and a chance to explore multiple destinations in one trip. However, despite the allure of smooth sailing, numerous challenges and mishaps can arise during these voyages.

From unexpected weather to onboard health issues, understanding these potential pitfalls can help travelers prepare better and enjoy their cruise experience to the fullest.

Accidents and Personal Injuries

Mishaps such as slips, falls, or injuries from activities—whether on the pool deck, in the gym, or during organized events—can occur unexpectedly.

For example, the tragic incident aboard Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas highlights the severity of such risks. In January 2024, 36-year-old Jonathan Mindrum of Chicago passed away shortly before the ship was set to dock in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Eyewitnesses suggested that there were multiple similar medical alerts during the voyage. Mindrum’s death was one of several tragic incidents on Atlantis Events chartered cruises in recent years.

Passengers should always be aware of safety measures, such as knowing the location of emergency exits and being mindful of physical activity limits. In cases of serious accidents or injuries, it’s essential to seek immediate medical attention from onboard staff.

In the above incident, families may consider consulting an attorney. A personal injury lawyer in Chicago can help them understand their legal rights and pursue potential claims for negligence or wrongful death.

TorHoerman Law notes that legal professionals can offer valuable assistance in uncovering the truth and navigating the claims process. You might be entitled to compensation if you or someone you know has suffered harm or monetary loss because of another person’s carelessness.

What are the legal rights of passengers in case of an accident on a cruise?

Passengers involved in a cruise accident have the right to seek compensation for injuries caused by negligence, unsafe conditions, or insufficient safety measures. They can file claims for medical expenses, lost wages, pain, and suffering. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help navigate the legal process and ensure fair compensation.

Common Health Issues Onboard

Health concerns are common during cruise vacations due to the close quarters, which can facilitate the spread of illnesses like norovirus and influenza. Passengers are particularly vulnerable to outbreaks, which may result in quarantines or restricted activities.

To reduce the risk of illness, travelers should practice good hygiene, regularly washing hands and using hand sanitizers. Staying informed about any health advisories from the cruise line can help passengers stay updated on potential outbreaks. Additionally, it’s crucial to familiarize oneself with onboard medical facilities in case of emergencies.

The CDC reports that between 2006 and 2019, approximately 127 million passengers traveled aboard 252 cruise ships under the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP). The analysis revealed a correlation between ship size, voyage length, and the risk of acute gastrointestinal illness (AGE).

While the overall rate of AGE cases on cruise ships declined during this period, larger ships and voyages saw higher illness rates among passengers. Similarly, crew members experienced increased illness rates on larger vessels and during trips lasting over five days.

How effective are onboard medical facilities in treating illnesses?

Onboard medical facilities can provide essential care for common illnesses and injuries, with staff trained to handle emergencies. However, they are limited in scope compared to land-based hospitals. Serious medical conditions may require evacuation to a medical facility ashore for more advanced treatment and specialized care.

Unexpected Weather Conditions

Weather can significantly disrupt cruise plans, impacting itineraries and passenger experiences. Storms, rough seas, and extreme temperatures may lead to changes or cancellations of planned excursions.

A recent incident reported by Fox Business highlights this issue. Royal Caribbean cruise guests experienced severe weather near Tenerife, Spain, on November 7. Passengers described feeling the ship tilt at what one traveler likened to a “45-degree angle.”

This tumultuous weather resulted in one guest sustaining injuries that required medical attention, prompting the ship to divert for disembarkation.

To prepare for unexpected weather conditions, travelers should take certain precautions. First, regularly check weather forecasts before and during the cruise to stay informed about potential disruptions.

Packing clothing suited for a range of weather conditions ensures comfort no matter what Mother Nature throws your way. Finally, maintaining flexibility helps passengers adapt to any changes in itinerary, making the cruise experience more enjoyable, even when the weather is unpredictable.

Lost Luggage and Travel Delays

Traveling to a cruise port often involves flights or other forms of transportation, which can lead to lost luggage or travel delays.

For example, Lindsey Hargesheimer, a photographer, shared her experience on TikTok after Celebrity Cruises lost her bag during a cruise from Amsterdam. She realized her luggage was missing when her family received theirs, but hers was nowhere to be found.

She eventually received a call from the Amsterdam port authorities, who had fished her bag out of the canal.

To minimize such risks, travelers should arrive at least a day before departure to resolve any potential travel issues. Utilizing luggage tracking technology offered by many airlines can provide peace of mind. Additionally, packing essentials like medications, toiletries, and a change of clothes ensures travelers have what they need if their checked bags are delayed.

What essential items should be packed in carry-on luggage for a cruise?

Essential items to pack in carry-on luggage for a cruise include medications and toiletries. Also, include a change of clothes, important documents, chargers, valuables, swimwear, sunscreen, and any personal items needed for the first day. This ensures comfort and preparedness in case of luggage delays.

Cabin Issues on Cruises

Cabin-related issues are not uncommon on cruises. Problems such as noisy neighbors, malfunctioning air conditioning, or plumbing issues can detract from the enjoyment of your vacation. To address these concerns:

  • Communicate with staff: If problems arise, promptly inform the cabin steward or guest services for assistance.
  • Choose cabins wisely: Research cabin locations before booking; midship cabins tend to be more stable in rough seas and quieter than those near entertainment venues.
  • Consider upgrades: If budget allows, upgrading to a higher category cabin may provide better amenities and comfort.

Enhance Your Safety on the Cruise

Although cruising is generally safe, various incidents can raise safety concerns among passengers, including accidents during excursions or onboard emergencies. To enhance safety during your cruise, it is essential to take proactive measures.

First, attend all mandatory safety drills; these sessions familiarize you with emergency procedures and evacuation routes. Second, exercise caution during off-ship excursions by selecting reputable tour providers and adhering to all safety guidelines provided by the cruise line.

Finally, remain aware of your surroundings both onboard and during excursions. Being vigilant can help you identify potential risks and avoid unsafe situations.

Cruise vacations offer unique experiences filled with opportunities for relaxation and adventure; however, they are not without their challenges and mishaps. By being aware of potential issues, travelers can take proactive steps to mitigate these challenges.

Preparation is key—by planning ahead and maintaining flexibility during your journey, you can enhance your overall cruise experience and create lasting memories.

Viking Names Two Newest Nile River Ships in Luxor

Viking® (www.viking.com) (NYSE: VIK) recently named its newest river ships, the Viking Hathor and the Viking Sobek, with a special celebration in Luxor, Egypt. The Hon. Edward Herbert served as the ceremonial godfather of the Viking Hathor; his great-great-grandfather, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, was Howard Carter’s benefactor and co-explorer, whose excavation uncovered the tomb of King Tutankhamen near Luxor almost precisely 102 years ago on November 4, 1922. Mohamed El Banna, founder of Cosmos Egypt and a member of the Egyptian Senate, served as the ceremonial godfather of the Viking Sobek. The Viking Hathor and the Viking Sobek are identical sister ships to the Viking Aton and the Viking Osiris. They are state-of-the-art vessels explicitly designed to navigate the Nile River on Viking’s popular 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary and built at Massara shipyard in Cairo.

Viking’s Newest Nile River Ships

“Today, we are proud to welcome the Viking Hathor and the Viking Sobek to our growing fleet in Egypt. Along with their sister ships, we believe they are by far the most elegant vessels on the Nile,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking. “We are very grateful for our continued close friendship with the Carnarvon family and that Eddie has honored us by serving as godfather of the Viking Hathor. For more than 15 years, Mohamed El Banna has been a part of the extended Viking family, helping to take good care of our guests in Egypt, and it is a great honor that he is serving as the godfather of the Viking Sobek. As our award-winning fleet on the Nile continues to grow, we look forward to introducing even more curious travelers to this phenomenal destination.”

The naming ceremony of the Viking Hathor and the Viking Sobek took place at Viking’s exclusive docking location in Luxor and was followed by a celebratory dinner inside the nearby Karnak Temple. Viking’s guests also enjoyed a performance by Sissel Kyrkjebø, one of the world’s leading crossover sopranos and godmother of the Viking Jupiter®, who sang the Egyptian, Norwegian and United Kingdom’s national anthems in their native languages.

The Hon. Edward Herbert, Godfather of the Viking Hathor

The Hon. Edward Herbert is the son of George Herbert, the 8th Earl of Carnarvon, and Fiona Carnarvon, the Countess of Carnarvon. Edward joins his father and mother in his new godfather role, who are also Viking’s first “godparents.” In 2022, Lord Carnarvon became Viking’s first godfather, fulfilling the role of the Viking Osiris. Lady Carnarvon is the godmother of a Viking Longship, the Viking Skadi and an ocean ship, the Viking Mars®. Edward’s great-great-grandfather, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, spent 16 years working in Luxor and later, in 1922, with his colleague Howard Carter, discovered the tomb of King Tutankhamun. In Lady Carnarvon’s newest book, The Earl and the Pharaoh: From the Real Downton Abbey to the Discovery of Tutankhamun, she explores the unparalleled life of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon and tells the behind-the-scenes story of the historic discovery.

Highclere Castle, Egypt & Viking

For years, Viking has offered a variety of ways for its guests to experience life at Highclere Castle, the home of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, and the historic estate best known as the filming location of Downton Abbey. Among the 5th Earl’s many talents, he was an avid amateur photographer with an artistic eye for composition. His photographs are currently at Highclere Castle, stored in photo albums in The Library, and show the process of discovering and excavating the tomb of Tutankhamun and scenes of daily life in Egypt of the period. With kind permission, the Carnarvons have allowed Viking to share this private collection for guests sailing on board the Viking Hathor, the Viking Sobek, and their sister ships, the Viking Osiris and the Viking Aton.

For guests interested in extending their exploration of Egypt, Viking offers Pre and Post Extensions that provide Privileged Access® to archives and exhibits. Guests on the five-day British Collections of Ancient Egypt extension will begin the journey in London, where they will meet their Viking Tour Director, an expert Egyptologist, and experience Privileged Access to two museums: first a private, early morning visit to the Egyptian Collection at the British Museum before it opens to the general public —and then a visit to the home and personal museum of world-renowned architect, Sir John Soane, where the tour will be illuminated by candlelight, a re-enactment of how Soane entertained guests and showcased his exquisite collection of Egyptian antiquities, including a 3,000-year-old Egyptian sarcophagus. Guests will also visit London’s Petrie Museum, which houses more than 80,000 artifacts from ancient Egypt and Sudan. In Oxford, guests will visit the Ashmolean Museum, one of the oldest in the world, and home to a varied collection of Egyptian mummies and art—and go behind the scenes at Oxford University’s Griffith Institute, where they will enjoy a Privileged Access visit to see Howard Carter’s archives, which detail the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb. Lastly, guests will have further Privileged Access with an exclusive visit to Highclere Castle to view the Earl of Carnarvon’s magnificent private collection of Egyptian artifacts, as well as archives and exhibits not normally accessible to the public.

Mohamed El Banna, Godfather of the Viking Sobek

With his exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and deep interest in world cultures, Mohamed El Banna was destined for a career in the travel industry. He completed a bachelor’s degree in commerce and began working in tourism in 1970. Seven years later, he founded Cosmos Tourism Company—now Cosmos Egypt—a Cairo-based tour operator and the country’s oldest destination management company. He continues to run the business with his son, Sherif El Banna, who serves as CEO. Viking has proudly partnered with Cosmos Egypt and Mr. El Banna for more than 15 years to promote exploration along the Nile River. As Viking’s exclusive tour operator in Egypt, the company continues to handle all ground operations and transportation for shore excursions and helps source English-speaking tour guides and Egyptologists. Mr. El Banna also helped Viking create its operational division in Egypt, which now includes more than 500 company employees that work in the country. Through these extensive partnerships, Viking consistently provides its guests with an award-winning and seamless travel experience in Egypt. As one of Egypt’s most devoted ambassadors for travel, Mr. El Banna has held several influential government positions throughout his distinguished career. Previously, he was a member of the Chamber of Tourism from 1986 to 1994 and served two terms as the Deputy of the Tourism and Antiquities Committee in the House of Representatives from 2005 to 2015. Currently, he is a senator in the Egyptian Senate, a role he will fulfill through the end of his five-year term in 2025.

The Viking Hathor, the Viking Sobek & Viking’s Growing Egypt Fleet

Hosting 82 guests in 41 staterooms, the new Viking Hathor and Viking Sobek are inspired by Viking’s award-winning river and ocean ships with the elegant Scandinavian design for which Viking is known. An identical sister ship to the Viking Osiris and the Viking Aton, the Viking Hathor and Viking Sobek feature several aspects familiar to Viking guests, such as a distinctive square bow and an indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace. Other ships in the Egypt fleet include the Viking Ra and the MS Antares. Viking plans to welcome four additional ships in the next two years—the Viking Amun and the Viking Thoth in 2025 and the Viking Sekhmet and the Viking Ptah in 2026—which would bring Viking’s fleet to 10 vessels on the Nile River.

Viking was rated #1 for Rivers, as well as #1 for Oceans and #1 for Expeditions, by Condé Nast Traveler in the 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards for the second consecutive year. This achievement marked the first time a travel company won these three categories in back-to-back years. Viking’s Egypt ships have also been included in Condé Nast Traveler’s “Hot List” the last two years. Viking was also named a “Best Luxury River Cruise of 2024” in Forbes’ “Best Luxury Cruises” list. Additionally, TIME magazine featured both Giza and Saqqara on its “World’s Greatest Places” 2023 list, mentioning sailing the Nile River with Viking. TIME notes that Viking is among the very few who stop in both Giza and the village of Sakkara, where excavation sites, like the megatombs of animal and human mummies, are active.

Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids Itinerary

During the 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary, guests begin with a three-night stay at a first-class hotel in Cairo, where they can visit iconic sites such as the Great Pyramids of Giza, the necropolis of Sakkara, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, or the Grand Egyptian Museum. Guests then fly to Luxor, where they visit the Temples of Luxor and Karnak before boarding a Viking river ship for an eight-day roundtrip cruise on the Nile River, featuring visits to the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens and the tomb of Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings, and excursions to the Temple of Khnum in Esna, the Dendera Temple complex in Qena, the temples at Abu Simbel and the High Dam in Aswan, and a visit to a colorful Nubian village, where guests can experience a traditional elementary school. Finally, the journey concludes with a flight back to Cairo for a final night in the ancient city.

Blue Diamond Membership Card

MSC Cruises is rolling out updates to its loyalty program, the MSC Voyagers Club, to make cruising with the line even more rewarding. Click here to view the updated Benefits Grid that outlines perks by tier.

New Blue Diamond Tier

The company is introducing a new loyalty tier for its most devoted guests—MSC Voyagers Club Blue Diamond. The new tier sits above the existing levels (Classic, Silver, Gold, and Diamond) and unlocks a range of exclusive benefits, including:

  • Flexible check-in times with priority embarkation and dedicated luggage drop-off service via the MSC Yacht Club check-in desk
  • My Choice dining, allowing guests to dine anytime within the main restaurant’s hours of service
  • A free Browse Wi-Fi package for one device per member
  • Free shuttle bus tickets in selected ports
  • Meet and greet with the ship’s captain or officer
  • Priority embarkation and priority access to tender boats in port

These benefits supplement the existing Diamond tier membership benefits, and should a cabin upgrade be available, both Diamond and Blue Diamond members will be given the highest priority.

The Blue Diamond tier is only attainable by sailing with MSC Cruises and not via alternative routes such as the MSC Voyagers Club Status Match Program. It truly rewards the line’s most loyal guests.

Another new benefit for all MSC Voyagers Club levels is the validity of their membership, which has been extended from three to five years. This means guests have more time to move through the membership tiers to access more benefits, only needing to cruise once every five years to retain their membership.

MSC Voyagers Club Loyalty Program

It’s now even easier to become an MSC Voyagers Club member. Anyone can sign up, even without a current booking, giving immediate access to the MSC Voyagers Selection departures and discounts of up to 20%. This unlocks new savings opportunities for anyone planning a vacation, whether searching for a quick Caribbean cruise getaway, a bucket-list Mediterranean cruise vacation, or one of the company’s new Alaska cruises.

Plus, U.S. residents booking through U.S. reservation channels are automatically enrolled, making it even easier to begin earning status in the program.

The refresh also sees enhanced benefits across all levels of the loyalty program. Learn more about MSC Voyagers Club benefits.

Port Everglades Tops Its Own Cruise Passenger Record

Port Everglades
Port Everglades is one of the three busiest cruise ports in the world, typically hosting nearly 4 million passengers annually.

Port Everglades bested its own cruise passenger record with a preliminary count of 4,010,919 guests embarking and disembarking during Fiscal Year 2024, which ended September 30, 2024. The new record is expected to be short lived, however, as 4.4 million guests are anticipated during FY2025.

“We expected to do well with the addition of Disney Cruise Line to our fleet and a mix of short and week-long cruises throughout the summer. As the year progressed, it became evident that a near-record 4 million guests was within reach,” said CEO and Port Director Joseph Morris. “Cruising is in high demand, and our cruise line partners are poised for greater gains with new itineraries and a variety of sailing dates.”

Cruise With Port Everglades

In just one year, from FY2023 to FY2024, cruise passenger counts grew 39% and cruise ship calls rose 23% as the cruise lines fully recovered from the pandemic. The turnaround port’s original record was set in FY2014 with 3,880,033 guests. In 2014, it took 887 cruise ships calls to set the port’s passenger record compared to 648 calls setting the new record this year because the ships are larger.

A Guide to Playing Online Roulette While Cruising

Man Playing on Mobile Phone in Cruise Ship Jacuzzi

Picture this: you’re cruising along the stunning coastlines, the sound of waves lapping against the ship, and you enjoy the thrill of playing roulette online. As you relax by the pool or sip a cocktail with an ocean view, you can dive into the excitement of the roulette table right from your mobile device.

For Canadians, online gaming has evolved, offering the freedom to enjoy casino classics like roulette anywhere—even at sea. Whether you’re spinning the wheel while basking in the sun or under the stars, the convenience of playing online while cruising adds a new level of adventure to your getaway.

Online Roulette Casinos in Canada: A Growing Trend

Casino sites have become increasingly popular, with roulette being a favorite among gamblers. Canadian players can explore a range of online roulette casinos that offer safe and legal gambling services. Whether you’re playing from home or while on a vacation, there’s plenty to choose from.

All of the best online roulette casinos in Canada provide hundreds of titles that players can enjoy while traveling. These platforms are fully compatible with mobile devices, allowing you to play even while cruising, ensuring that your roulette experience is just a tap away wherever you are, as long as you have a strong internet connection.

Staying Connected: How to Access Online Roulette on a Cruise

Most modern cruise ships are equipped with reliable Wi-Fi, allowing players to enjoy the best roulette casino sites even while sailing in the middle of the ocean. Whether lounging by the pool or relaxing in your cabin, you can stay connected and keep the excitement going.

Canadian players have a few options for staying connected. Many cruise lines offer Wi-Fi packages designed for different needs, from basic browsing to high-speed options ideal for gaming. Mobile data may also be an option if the ship sails near certain regions. For the best experience, choose a package that ensures fast internet speed to avoid interruptions during your online roulette sessions.

Best Practices for Playing Online Roulette While at Sea

To optimize your online roulette gameplay while cruising, ensure a stable internet connection. Try to time your gameplay for when the ship is in calmer waters to help you stay focused. Setting a budget before you start is essential for responsible gaming, and using strategies like the Martingale or Fibonacci systems can add structure to your sessions. Remember, balance is key—take breaks to explore and enjoy the many activities available onboard.

If the weather turns bad or the internet connection is interrupted, don’t worry! Many cruise ships have onboard casinos that open while at sea. They are a great alternative, allowing you to continue the fun and play roulette or other casino games in a more traditional setting.

Benefits of Playing Roulette While Cruising

Combining the excitement of cruising with the thrill of online roulette creates uniqueness. Whether sailing through scenic waters or lounging in luxury, playing roulette adds an extra layer of fun to your adventure. The freedom to enjoy the game anywhere on the ship, whether by the pool, in your cabin, or while sipping a drink at the bar, gives you flexibility.

All the top roulette sites in Canada also offer live dealer roulette, allowing you to interact with the dealer and other players in real-time. This social element recreates the atmosphere of a land-based casino, making your online gaming feel even more immersive while at sea.

Keeping Your Data Safe: Security Tips for Online Gaming While Traveling

When playing online roulette while cruising, keeping your data secure is essential. Players should consider using a VPN to protect their connection and ensure privacy. Always choose a secure internet connection, and use strong, unique passwords for your casino accounts to prevent unauthorized access.

Avoid public Wi-Fi networks, as they are more vulnerable to security risks. Instead, rely on the ship’s encrypted Wi-Fi for safer gaming. For an extra layer of protection, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your casino accounts, adding security steps and ensuring your gaming account remains safe while travelling.

A Few Legal Notes: Are Canadians Allowed to Gamble Online While Abroad?

According to Canadian gambling laws, citizens are allowed to gamble online while traveling abroad or in international waters as long as they play through licensed online casinos. This means that while on a cruise, you can continue enjoying your favourite online roulette games without legal concerns, provided you’re using a trusted platform.

However, it’s important to be mindful of the specific regulations of the countries where your cruise ship may dock. Some nations have different laws regarding online gambling, so it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with local rules before accessing online casinos in those areas. Staying informed ensures smooth and legal casino gaming.

Conclusion

Playing online roulette while cruising offers an unbeatable combination of convenience and excitement. Whether enjoying the view from your balcony or relaxing by the poolside, the ability to spin the wheel at your leisure adds a thrilling dimension to your vacation. With easy access to secure online casinos, you can dive into the action no matter where your cruise takes you.
