This is one place I won't see when we're in Seattle, except from terra firma.

Over the past several years, I've developed acrophobia. The last time we went up to the top of the Stratosphere, I thought Mal was going to pry me out of the elevator. :(

Sorry to read this, Sis. Had we known each other at the time, I guess you would not have come to our offices on the 57th floor of the Empire State Building?

Sis, that wouldn't have been a problem back then. It's only been the past 10 years or so. I know you moved out to Arizona before that.

Over the last few years, I've developed angst when I have to fly. It's the take offs and landings that bother me. It makes it difficult to fly cross country. I think I need to try my Friend's Mother's trick...she used to consume several manhattan's before she got on the plane.

Sis - absolutely true story. My late [paternal] Grandmother lived with us until her death at almost 88 years. She was deathly afraid of heights - would never come to our office, we'd have to warn her if we were about to cross a bridge while driving so she could shut her eyes and bring out her rosary - you get the picture. In 1962 (she was 80), we had driven down to Florida with her and took her to a well-known restaurant in the Fort Lauderdale area, the Mai-Kai. She was fascinated with it - loved the decor, the ambiance, the food and, yes, her Manhattan. I don't know what possessed us, but Mom, Dad and I began telling her (exaggeration, of course) that this was what Hawai'i was like if she ever wanted to visit her other son whom she hadn't seen in 18 years. He remained in Honolulu after WWII. To make a long story short, we worked on her for several months - eased with Manhattans - until we convinced her to fly to San Francisco, then on to Honolulu with us. Airplanes were anathema to her, but she agreed. To the moment we took off from JFK Airport, we would have bet anything she would back down - and we would, of course, had followed her wishes. Mom, Dad and I were sweating out this flight because we had thunderstorms (another of her terrors) all the way from JFK to SFO. My Grandmother wasn't aware of anything! When we got to our hotel in San Francisco, the Mark Hopkins, which was well past midnight NY time, she wanted to go down to the Vienna Coffee House in the hotel that we had told her about. She ate a huge hamburger with gusto! I won't bore you with the whole story, but the entire trip went like a fairy tale. When we returned home about a month later, we overheard my Grandmother speaking on the phone [in Italian] with one of her older sisters. The jist of the conversation, translated - YOU KNOW, MY SISTER, THE ONLY WAY TO TRAVEL IS TO FLY!!! Bless her, she took a number of flights after that before she passed away.

But there may just be something to "Manhattan therapy" and flying!

I know how everyone feels about flying I was so upset a few days before it was time to leave for new york I drove everyone mad. I am sure they were glad to get rid of me. I love cruiseing so I knew I had to do it. I feel the same way about small boats I love cruise ships but don't even like tenders But this last flight coming home was very long and much as I enjoyed new york it will be a long time till I will fly to there again.

It's a fabulous itinerary, Corky, with all different ports for 14 days. But I understand - family comes first. Perhaps 2013......?

Fingers crossed and the creak don't rise.

Jim - Feast at Lele is at the original location of the Old Lahaina Luau - at the water's edge and within walking distance of the tender pier. This was sunset when we were there aboard Zaandam in 2008...

If you comment about having stiff fingers, we'll know why. Think Hawai'i.

One reason I'm looking for a late departure (11:00pm) from Lahaina is this:

FEAST AT LELE|OFFICIAL WEBSITE|MAUI'S FINE DINING POLYNESIAN DINNER SHOW

I'd like to treat the group to this. It was one of the most fabulous evenings my friends and I can ever remember.

Shipmaven - I know you've mentioned before about your experience, it looks absolutely wonderful.
