Hi Guys!

We're back from Las Vegas. We didn't catch any shows....except for the occasional bride, Elvis impersonator, and working girl!!! Actually we saw one girl that Greg thought was a working girl, but I thought she was just a young girl with poor taste in clothes! Let's just say that the highlight of spotting her was when she dropped her cell phone and had to kick it to the side of the hall because she could not pick it up in her too short sheer dress with black thong. Actually, I don't know what she was afraid that we'd see since we were already seeing it all already!!! :)

The hotel was gorgeous. The square footage of our room was almost as large as our house. The bed was dreamy.....a big fluffy duvet with comfy mattress and pillows. I especially loved watching the tv in the bathroom while I was taking my shower. The pool was gorgeous. I did take pictures, but you all know how long it takes me to post pictures!!!

We didn't win much.....I didn't spend my daily allowance, so I came home and went to the Coach Store and bought a few things today. We are both exhausted. We both won a little at roulette, and I had a couple of good nights on the slot machines, but I never won anything that big - just $50 or $70 here or there. Greg is at the fire station today, but he's been able to nap. We both had a hard time adjusting to the time change. I had to get my hair highlighted this morning and I didn't want to get out of bed to make the appointment because I was so tired. I've got laundry going and I in dire need of a nap, but I want to stay up so I can get myself on the right time schedule!

George, where the heck is the review and all the details of the changes??? To the rest of the Cats, George and I exchanged pleasantries via voicemail mocking each other for having to go back to work. I called him from the pool wishing him a good day back at work. He called the next day to remind me that I was one day closer to my vacation being over. And he wonders why I tell him that he reminds me of a (much older) older brother.

Dee, glad to see you post! I can't wait to stop by the store when we are down there.

Oh, and regarding camping.....thank God no one has suggested that the Big Cats go camping instead of cruising because I'd have to turn in my membership card! I've got to tell you, I totally don't see why you guys all like it! I need a comfy bed, air conditioning and a tv. That's vacation.

Ok...off to switch loads of laundry again. Sheree

Sheree...glad you are back...LET THE POSTING BEGIN! :lol Now I do have movies when camping and we only camp during the cool wheather so no a/c needed. I have a very comfy bed (double high air matress) with all my home linens. I know how to camp! Actually you could watch stuff for TV on the internet! wireless access in some places. Actually I grew up camping in a 25 foot Coachman Bunkhouse camper. I had my private bath and kitchen! I sure miss that camper.

Glad you had a good time in Vegas. Tell Greg hi!

Ok Dee.....I think I could survive your kind of camping!!!! But not for more than a couple of nightts!

Yes Dan, we were at the Venetian. We tried not to stay up all night because of the horrible time we are going through now, being on West Coast time while living on Eastern Time!!!!

I forgot to mention our anniversary dinner at Emeril's Delmonico Steakhouse. It was one of the best meals ever, if not the best meal I've ever had. Delicious Cajun BBQ Shrimp as an appetizer for me, Crab Chowder for Greg, delicious salads, then salmon for Greg and a deliciously flavored ribeye for me. It was an outstanding meal and dining experience!!! Greg has been blessed to be married to me for 17 years now, that lucky guy! :)

Hey All,

Glad everyone made it back from their trips safe. I just got back from jamaica today. Wow what a great time and it was all paid for by Appleton Rum. A little work and a lot of fun. Maybe I need to pray that I keep the position as the liquor buyer. Maybe I can give up perfume and just do liquor.

Sheree come on I cruised with you all you should camp wit all of us. HA ha ha yeah right. Especially I love it so much myself. (td)
Talk to you all later.

Good morning all,

As soon as I get some time, I will look back at the posts we missed. For the time being, here is a mini review of the cruise you all requested...

5/25/08 Vision of The Seas Review

Commute:

Ok, here it is. I wrote this first on word pad because past experiences have taught me that internet connections aren’t as reliable as they need to be when posting something long. This is just for the group, I’m not going to proof read this for typos and post on the boards as a review. I wrote this real quick this morning, so forgive the mistakes and try to read thru. Hopefully I will have time to get photos on line some time today.

Hotel:

As you all know we drove over a couple days early to just kind of hang out by the port and the hotel pool. The trip is approximately 6 hours and unfortunately fuel pump prices are all over $4.00 a gallon in the so cal area.
The hotel we stayed at was the Westin Los Angeles airport. We got it for $60.00 a night on price line. Great hotel….great staff…well maintained….nice rooms and beds…nice heated pool…BAD NEIGHBORHOOD! Not a place to even walk around during daylight. We will most certainly stay by the port next go around. The weather was surprisingly cold, mid 50’s and light rain. That didn’t stop Arrielle and I from hanging out by the pool. We didn’t eat at the hotel either…very pricey! A hamburger with no sides was $17.00. No nice eating establishments nearby either…can’t wait for Grills this year!

Embarkation:

As stated above, quite cold outside, even for me. The Port of Los Angeles is just to the west of the big San Pedro bridge, which makes for nice pictures. We arrived at about 9:45 and were quite surprised to see port authorities already allowing those embarking to enter. Pretty simple luggage drop off and parking (not covered, $12.00 a day!) within close proximity of the ship. This particular weekend marked the departure of the Princess ships for Alaska and the arrival of the Disney Magic in it’s new permanent home in Los Angeles. We were docked at pier 31, a make shift big top tent that truly lacks the amenities of today’s modern ports. This pier pretty much is a big open hull split down the middle for seating and luggage pick-up. The embarkation process was pretty much the same as other RCCL ports, get a number and wait to be called. Tommy / Regina, you both will be happy to know Platinum members got on earlier….about 2 minutes earlier :D I seem to recall we were on the ship at about noon…very smooth process (unfortunately the polar opposite of debarking).

The Ship:

The Vision of the Seas came into service in 1998 and is about 80k tons. The Centrum is truly the highlight of the ship. I see now why the Vision is known as the ship of glass. Decks 4,5,6 are ceiling to floor green glass and give you a great place to hang out to enjoy a drink, read, or chat, while enjoying a scenic view of the ocean. Besides the Solarium, this was my favorite place to hang out. Quick note, the Seattle’s Best coffee shop we’ve grown accustomed to walking up to and getting a regular cup of joe, charges for on the Vision. I’m not sure if this is something implemented fleet wide, hopefully not. We couldn’t get into the cabins until 2:00, so we went to the Windjammer for some lunch. Interestingly, the Windjammer is located in the front of the ship (gym area on most ships), not the back. The end result is a much smaller buffet and seating area, that lacks many of the menu options found on bigger ships. No omelet, delicatessen , Chinese, or sushi stations. The pizza, hamburger, hot dog stations are crammed into one small area adjacent to the Solarium pool. Not a good location and the pizza had to be frozen. One piece the whole sailing.

Cabin:

We were in cabin #2104 (Ocean view). First impression….â€ÂOh my God it’s small!†The bathroom was so small my head rubbed the ceiling! And the shower, lets just say “God help you if you dropped anything.†No joke, you had to step out if you did! Seeing me in the restroom was truly a sense of amusement for Anne and our cabin attendant Samson (5’ tall on a good day!). While the bedding linens were good, the upgrades for mattresses have yet to make it to the Vision. I have never been so happy to get back home to my own bed. Samson was great! Always smiling and joking, with many stories to tell. I shared many conversations with him throughout the weeks. As personable as he was, he was even better at his job. Our cabin was always spotless and he was more than happy to bring ice for my cooler whenever necessary. While the cabin had it’s draw backs, Samson did a great job taking care of us the entire cruise.

Dining Room:

The dining room is another story all together! We did early dining at table #106. Great location, very bad dining team. And while I could go on and on about these two, based on my observations of adjacent dining teams, I’m confident the problems we experienced through-out the cruise were not indicative of the dining room as a whole. Our assistant waiter was on the last week of his contract, and he obviously had somewhere better to be, than with us. On a bright note, our head waiter was one of the best we have ever had. Unlike our dining team, he was quite visible and always doing the things the other two weren’t around to do. On the menu, we noticed several changes. All soups, salads and appetizers are in one section under “startersâ€Â. This wasn’t a problem for us, however we did notice how other diners would just order one item from the starters and then an entrée. There were also 3 entrees (penne pasta, herb chicken breast, sirloin steak) on the menu every night and repeats of others on other nights. We couldn’t help but wonder if this was a cost saving measure by RCCL. We were quite fortunate to have great table mates…a family of 5 from Australia and a family of 3 from AZ. Arrielle spent much of the cruise with the granddaughter in this party.

Sea Days:

Shockingly, Arrielle spent sea days as far away from us as she could. She hung out the whole time with friends she made throughout the week. This was actually a good thing, we had some good walkie-talkies to stay in touch with her and we got to hang out in the Solarium, rather than the main pool. The Solarium was easily my favorite place to hang out throughout the week. Staff did and excellent job of keeping the kids out, while we enjoyed many conversations with others by the pool. And of course what cruise would be complete without the my many trips in tow to the duty free shops throughout the week with Anne.

Ports:

For the sake of time and my health (Anne has a list of things I have to get done today), I’m going to be brief on the ports. Mazatlan and Cab San Lucas were filled with shopping and many Pacificos and Margaritas at various little Cantinas. We went to Cabo Wabo again, but quickly left…place was dead and just wasn’t the same without Jim and the kids.

Puerto Vallarta was great! Our table mates from AZ offered to let us tag along for a tour for the day. One of the things we did was letting Arrielle and her friend do a swim with the dolphins. We planned this for a few days and they had no idea what was going on until they were standing pool side in life vests as they released the dolphins. The looks on their faces were beyond explanation! We did a pricier package, which gave them one plus hours with the dolphins. I brought four of the over-priced photos and will scan and send for all to see. Arrielle will truly remember this for the rest of her life. After we continued on our tour, which consisted of touring to much of the poverty stricken areas and not enough of the sites. We did have lunch at a Mexican restaurant our guide deemed the best authentic Mexican food anywhere. We thought the food was ok, but over-priced for the bad location it was in. After we returned to the ship area to shop and enjoy a few more Pacificos before boarding the ship. All in all, we had a great time spending the day with our new friends and our time at the dolphin park.

Debarkation / Closing:

Debarkation from this ship is a disaster. Clearing customs takes place on board in the theater. With having to be out of the cabin early and everyone waiting to clear customs and exit a very small Centrum area, tempers flared. Imagine all the self assist passengers in the same area with all their luggage with them…not a good set up to say the least. I struck up a conversation with the cruise director while waiting and unfortunately RCCL plans on utilizing the same system when the Mariner comes to Los Angeles in February (2 times the size and passengers as the Vision). Others standing by seemed more surprised to this admission than I did. RCCL would be well served in moving the customs portion of debarkation into the terminal area, like all other ports. Upon finally exiting the ship, getting our luggage and exiting the parking lot was a simple quick process. And of course what trip would be complete without a stop over at Anne’s favorite shopping destination the Cabazon Outlets just west of Palm Springs. In closing, a cruise is a cruise, no matter the things we didn’t care for. Would we sail the Vision again…probably not, unless the price was way to good to pass up. Besides, I’m pretty sure the Vision is headed to Europe next year, which is not likely for us for the foreseeable future. I do think we have been spoiled by all the Liberty and Mariner had to offer and the lack of those amenities being available on the Vision. Also, Anne and I found ourselves discussing the over-all cruise experience the Big Cats play for us. As much as it kills me to admit this, cruising is just not the same without the group. We are so used to hanging out / meeting up in passing with all of you throughout the cruise, that anything else is just not the same. Anyway, that’s it in a nut shell! We can’t wait to see you all for the real cruise in Sept.

Ok....we're pretty pathetic, Cats! We've now gotten to a point where we don't enjoy cruising as much when we are not together! I remember the cruise that Greg and I took on the Mariner when we were going to go West that year.....it just wasn't the same. I cannot wait until we are all together again for our cruise.....Cris, Dee, are you sure you can't somehow join us, even 4 to an inside cabin???????? It would be great.

New boss has scored some points with me. First she tells me that I get to order new office furniture (brand new, wood, modular system, plus a new office chair, plus 2 new guest chairs) then she hands me 2 tickets to the Indians game this Sunday, in the suite!!!! I might just love this new boss after all.......My previous furniture was (no joke) taken from the trash at the hospital after I discovered it was better than the furniture I had. How pathetic is that?????

George, nice review. I sure hope no one minds when I order a couple of starters, such as salad, soup and/or shrimp cocktail! In fact, I hope you all join me!

Oh great, now everyone is gone and gotten all sentimental on me :)D I will say though, you do find yourself looking for the group when sailing solo.

Girls, there are inside cabins still available if you can swing it. It would be great to have the whole group sailing together again. I didn't see it posted, but were you able to book the Raddisson?

Trust me, I have no qualms about ordering more than one items from each section if necessary. I do however have to question the reasoning behind the changes.

I grew up camping as well. Unfortunately Anne is about as wilderness savy as Zsa Zsa Gabor was in Green Acres :D

We just purchased two carryon bags from ebags. With the new luggage restrictions we will have to pack much less when flying. Two of our bigger items, toiletry bag and collapsible cooler, will wait until we get to port...to which we can purchase in town and save space in our luggage. Jim, I will probably leave the collapsible cooler with you, if it's worth keeping until the following year.
