A little more news...
They only just identified the infection she has yesterday (September 2nd) so they've just started her on antibiotics. It will be a bit before she starts to feel better. Apparently it came in through her dialysis port and they are going to replace it. Right now the infection is her worst enemy and no other ones on the horizon. Let's hope it stays that way!

Actually if she is has end stage renal disease she can get medicare. If she doesn't already have insurance then if kicks in right away but if she has insurance then it kicks in in 30 months. I had to deal with this because my dh had renal failure when he was 60. I hope that Connie can get better but I do think her son is doing the right thing because she probably will never be able to live alone again

Ewheelock - did you mean 30 days, or is it really 30 months before the medicare kicks in? That seems a long time.

In one way that's good news. Hopefully antibotics will do the trick. Yes medicare takes over after your private insurance pays forf 30 months (if you don't have insurance medicare is immediate) My husband was on dialysis for 5 1/2 years before he passed away. He was functional until the last 1 1/2 years then had an electric wheelchair and did fine when I was at work. He also had cardiac problems so I know what she's facing. Lots of prayers from here.

ewheelock and Texas Sue - so if someone Has insurance, goes into renal failure...and maintains their insurance, then, after 30 months the medicare kicks in. Got it.
What if someone loses their insurance before the 30 months is up, will medicare immediately kick in?

Yes, it would. My dh was on peritoneal dialysis and the clinic charged medicare between 25k and 28k per month. Of course they didn't pay that much but when we didn't have the supplemental policy (didn't get that till I went to work for the company that I work for now) it ran us between 400 and 500 a month after medicare paid.
Yes medicare will pick up but doesn't pay near as much as private insurance. Bill had to go for dialysis 3 times a week 4 hours each time and the cost was $22,000 to $28,000 a month depending on what medications he needed. We were lucky the dialysis center he went to took what ever payment they received and never billed us anything. Of course that was just the start of all the medical bills, surgery for placements of dialysis graphs, hospital for pneumonia plus many others. Don't wish that on anyone.

Today's (Sept. 6) latest on Connie...
Connie's about the same - they've been playing with her antibiotics to find something that can clear up the infection, but not much progress has been made yet. Will hopefully know more tomorrow when the hosp. is back at full staff. She's lethargic, but aware and can still carry on conversation for a bit. Visitors seem to tire her out pretty quickly, though.
Maxie has been adopted. Scooter remains in a shelter - I was told he has never wanted to use a litter box, so that creates a problem. Simon is in the process of being adopted.

Thanks for the update on Connie & her cats. I hope that Connie will be able to get news of her pets whenever she needs a 'fix'. It is not great news about her but at least it is not drastic news. Has her son made any headway on the sale of her trailer? I don't envy him that job.
