Is Sports Betting Legal on Ships Departing from the USA?

The lure of the wide open ocean and a tranquil time away from the stresses of day-to-day life sends people flocking to cruise liners. But while you are bobbing around in the Caribbean or Mediterranean, back on land, the world of sport doesn’t stop until you get back from your holiday.

So that means you still may fancy looking at some current football tips for matches, and fancy placing a bet. But is it legal to do that from ships that are departing the USA? In many circumstances, gambling on ships is legal, but it’s not all cut and dry.

If you are heading out to take in the sun and salty air soon, but still want to keep your eye on the sports action back home, then here is all you need to know about betting while on cruise ships leaving the US.

International Waters

It is likely that the term ‘International Waters’ has crossed your path at some point in your life. It’s certainly popped up in a lot of movies, where people head to the sanctuary of international waters to play high-stakes poker games.

The label refers to what is termed as the high seas and begins 24 miles off the coast of a country. There are three zones of water according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

●     Territorial Waters: Up to a 12-mile distance out to sea, and where a country’s laws apply.

●     Contiguous Waters: This extends the jurisdiction of waters out to 24 hours, meaning that a country can, under suspicion, board ships travelling in those waters.

●     International Waters: More than 24 miles off a country’s coast, where the ship’s country of registration determines the law. Contrary to popular belief, international waters aren’t a place where there are no laws.

Flying the Flag

What country’s flag a ship sails under is the key area of gambling at sea. The gambling or betting rules you are faced with while on board, are determined by what country the ship is registered in. A good example is that while on board a ship registered in the US, you will still have to be a minimum of 21 years of age to place bets, regardless of your nationality.

Players on board a ship from the UK would get a little more leeway, as the legal betting age in the UK is lower at 18 years. Betting on UK cruise ships tends to be more lax than their US counterparts.

As for regulations, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) generally enforces regulations that are used by licensed, land-based casinos and their governing bodies. So you could, for example, expect to see Nevada or New Jersey regulations and policies used on US ships.

Hitting the Distance

Getting beyond territorial waters is the threshold, and that applies to any country. If you are leaving Miami for example, you will have to wait until your vessel reaches at least 12 miles. Once outside that range, then a ship can start to legally offer gambling and betting activities.

But after you have just cast off, therefore, you are going to have to find other things to do, like shuffleboard or catching some Instapics, so be prepared. But what about closer to shore?

Within 12 Miles

When the vessel encroaches within 12 miles of the coast of a country, the scene changes. No longer is the ship’s country of registration the determining factor – it is the rules of the country whose territorial waters it is. That’s why in most instances, when you are leaving or returning to the US, sports betting will be put on pause.

Cruising the Casinos

Casino play onboard cruise liners is hugely popular. It’s reported that there are an average of 300 slot machines per cruise ship out there. So that’s a lot of gambling machines out there floating on the waters. You will be able to tell when these are operational, as when approaching territorial waters, onboard casinos are simply going to shut up shop.

Stay Afloat

In summary, whatever country the ship is registered to will set the gambling rules, apart from when you sail into territorial waters. So the laws are ship-dependent and certainly worth checking on before you book.

It’s also advisable to check a full itinerary of your cruise so that you know roughly when you can expect gambling options to be open or closed. If in doubt at the end of the day, simply ask a member of staff for advice.

Viking® has announced its newest ship for the Nile River—the 82-guest Viking Hathor—was “floated out,” marking a significant construction milestone and the first time the ship has touched water. Set to debut in August 2024, the Viking Hathor will join the company’s growing fleet of state-of-the-art ships for the Nile River and will sail Viking’s popular 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary.

Float Out of Viking Hathor

“Egypt is a phenomenal destination, and we are pleased with the continued interest for our Nile River voyages. Our guests are thinking people who are curious about the world—and Egypt, with its cultural treasures and ancient antiquities, remains at the top of the travel list for many of them,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. “With the float out of the Viking Hathor, we look forward to welcoming more guests to experience this fantastic region.”

The traditional float-out ceremony of the Viking Hathor took place at Massara shipyard in Cairo. It is significant because it denotes a ship moving into its final stage of construction. She will be moved to a nearby outfitting dock for final construction and interior build-out.

The Viking Hathor & Viking’s Growing Egypt Fleet

Hosting 82 guests in 41 staterooms, the new, state-of-the-art Viking Hathor is inspired by Viking’s award-winning river and ocean ships with the elegant Scandinavian design for which Viking is known. An identical sister ship to the Viking Osiris and the Viking Aton, the Viking Hathor features several aspects familiar to Viking guests, such as a distinctive square bow and an indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace. Viking will have six ships sailing the Nile by 2025 with the addition of another sister ship, the Viking Sobek, which is already under construction and will be delivered next year. Additional ships in the Egypt fleet currently include the Viking Ra and the MS Antares.

Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids Itinerary

Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary

During the 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary, guests begin with a three-night stay at a first-class hotel in Cairo, where they can visit iconic sites such as the Great Pyramids of Giza, the necropolis of Sakkara, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, or the Grand Egyptian Museum. Guests then fly to Luxor, where they visit the Temples of Luxor and Karnak before boarding a Viking river ship for an eight-day roundtrip cruise on the Nile River, featuring visits to the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens and the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings, and excursions to the Temple of Khnum in Esna, the Dendera Temple complex in Qena, the temples at Abu Simbel and the High Dam in Aswan, and a visit to a colorful Nubian village, where guests can experience a traditional elementary school. Finally, the journey concludes with a flight back to Cairo for a final night in the ancient city.

Recently, the Viking Osiris was named one of the “Best New Cruises” in Condé Nast Traveler’s “Hot List” and the “Best Luxury River Cruise” in Forbes’ “Best Luxury Cruises” list. Additionally, TIME magazine featured both Giza and Saqqara on its “World’s Greatest Places” list, recommending sailing the Nile River with Viking. TIME notes that Viking is among the very few who stop in both Giza and the village of Sakkara, where excavation sites, like the megatombs of animal and human mummies, are active.

For guests looking to extend their journey in Egypt, Viking also offers Pre and Post Extensions that provide Privileged Access to archives and exhibits. Guests on the five-day British Collections of Ancient Egypt extension will begin the journey in London, where they will meet their Viking Tour Director, an expert Egyptologist, and experience Privileged Access to two museums: first a private, early morning visit to the Egyptian Collection at the British Museum before it opens to the general public – and then a visit to the home and personal museum of world-renowned architect, Sir John Soane, where the tour will be illuminated by candlelight, a re-enactment of how Soane entertained guests and showcased his exquisite collection of Egyptian antiquities, including a 3,000-year-old Egyptian sarcophagus. Guests will also visit London’s Petrie Museum, which houses more than 80,000 artifacts from ancient Egypt and Sudan. In Oxford, guests will visit the Ashmolean Museum, one of the oldest in the world, and home to a varied collection of Egyptian mummies and art—and go behind the scenes at Oxford University’s Griffith Institute, where they will enjoy a Privileged Access visit to see Howard Carter’s archives, which detail the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Carnival Cruise Line To Get A 5th Excel-Class Ship

Carnival Cruise Line's Excel Class Ships

Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world’s largest cruise company, today announced it has signed an agreement with Meyer Werft shipyard for a fifth Excel-class cruise ship for its namesake Carnival Cruise Line brand. The delivery date is set for 2028.

In mid-February, Carnival Corporation announced the first newbuild order placed in five years, with news that a fourth Excel-class ship would join the Carnival Cruise Line fleet in Spring 2027.

Carnival Corporation Orders 11th Excel-Class Ship

This announcement confirms the 11th Excel-class ship for the corporation’s fleet across four world-class brands and the fifth to be sailed by Carnival Cruise Line. “Carnival’s Excel-class fleet will soon be a quintet of these very popular ships that provide outstanding guest amenities and tremendous operating efficiencies,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “Since the introduction of Mardi Gras in 2021 and the subsequent expansion with Carnival Celebration in 2022 and Carnival Jubilee in 2023, these Excel-class ships are driving excitement, demand, and strong guest satisfaction ratings. With the arrival of Carnival Firenze in April, we are completing the addition of five ships to our fleet in less than 20 months, and then we will pivot to another phase of growth with these two Excel ships.”

Carnival Cruise Line’s 5th Excel-Class Ship Ordered

This fifth Excel-class ship will be built on the same platform as its sisters, with the 180,000-ton ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and designed to carry over 6,400 guests and 1,800 crew.

“This new order continues to balance our commitment to growth with our responsible capital approach to utilize strong free cash flow over the next several years to strategically improve our balance sheet, significantly reduce our leverage levels and continue to transfer value from debt holders to shareholders,” said Josh Weinstein, CEO of Carnival Corporation & plc.

Carnival Expanding Passenger Capacity

Our tour review for Carnival’s first Excel-Class ship, Mardi Gras

“Carnival Cruise Line continues to perform at an outstanding level, and we are focused on adding capacity across the company where it aligns with demand and our position in the marketplace. This measured capacity growth strategy will result in our adding one to two ships per year beginning in 2027, and we will be identifying additional fleet plans over the coming months for our cruise lines to meet capacity demand and improve execution across all aspects of our operation, with the benefit of yielding higher return on invested capital,” said Weinstein.

“We are proud of the role the Excel-class from MEYER WERFT and MEYER TURKU has played in contributing to the success of Carnival Corporation for many years now. We look forward to continuing this success story together,” said Bernd Eikens, CEO MEYER Group. This order is contingent upon financing, which is expected to be completed later this year.

Can Cruise Ship Crew Members Gamble in an Onboard Casino? Insights on Staff Limitations

Signing up for a cruise experience opens up play, relaxation, and discovery opportunities. However, for cruise ship crew members, the adventure comes differently and with certain limitations. Crew members are the face and force behind all the activities and entertainment guests enjoy while onboard the ship. They’re responsible for hosting and providing entertainment and leisure, from dining and events to casino gambling.

Can cruise ship crews play at the onboard casino? In this article, we’ll cover the general regulations related to onboard casinos and restrictions on crew members.

Onboard Gambling: What’s Behind It

Cruise ships aren’t just for travel; they now offer a whole entertainment package thanks to its many facilities onboard, including casinos. Onboard casinos feature a wide range of games, with slot machines, poker, and table games being the most popular. Unlike online casinos that accept PayPal for UK customers or customers of other countries, onboard casinos generally do not have PayPal or other digital payments (Neteller, Skrill, mobile wallets and others) among their options. Typically an onboard cashier accepts cash and bank cards.

The US Cruise Ship Competitiveness Act of 1991 was instrumental in shaping the course of gambling aboard cruise vessels. This legislation permitted American-registered cruise ships to host gambling activities once they hit international waters, ushering in the era of cruise ship gambling. Before this law, U.S.-flagged cruise ships didn’t offer gambling options onboard, as they were subject to U.S. regulations relevant for American waters.

Currently, regulations for cruise ship casinos are determined by the laws of the country where the ship is registered, along with international rules that oversee gambling operations conducted while the vessel is navigating on the open sea.

While the gambling laws for online and land-based casinos are clear, it’s far more challenging to know who regulates the laws on the sea. The International Council of Cruise Lines (CLIA) , the largest international industry trade association, unites operators of cruise ships. It exercises some form of regulatory control and sets standards concerning equipment, customer service, anti-corruption policies etc.

As for the general rules of play, they follow the policies of established casinos,  and operators must post the limits, and only adults are allowed to gamble.

Off-Limits to Crew Members?

Can Cruise Ship Crew Members Gamble in an Onboard Casino? Insights on Staff Limitations | 22
Norwegian Cruise Line Casino

While cruise ship operators boast specific rules and regulations for their employees, they are still under the supervision of the CLIA’s policy. For example, there are internal controls in addition to the types of casino games to play. All CLIA members should only allow adults to gamble in their facilities. All gambling machines and tables must be inspected by an internal audit team that does not exceed 12 months. Onboard casinos must also detail their internal control procedures, covering cash management and casino cage procedures. And to comply with these general policies, casinos must use surveillance tools to ensure fairness and equity.

As a general rule, crews are not allowed to gamble in the casino.

And If They Are Off-Duty?

MSC Poesia pool deck
MSC Poesia pool deck

If they’re off duty and are a guest on the ship or a passenger, generally crew members are still not allowed to gamble on the ship where they work.

Cruise lines typically enforce strict regulations concerning the involvement of their staff in such activities even during their off-duty hours onboard. These rules commonly forbid crew members from gambling within their workplace casino, on any ship under the same brand, or even within the larger corporate entity that owns the cruise line.

Also, a wife or a husband of a crew member is typically not allowed to gamble onboard a cruise ship if they accompany their spouses. This rule may apply to all the relatives traveling with staff on duty.

In some cases crew members who want to gamble or enjoy leisure time can do it informally, when off duty, playing not in a casino, but against other crew members. Still, this informal activity can vary depending on the cruise line’s policies and regulations.  While private poker or other games in the crew quarters may be allowed, it’s essential to be aware and adhere to the specific rules and guidelines set by the cruise line regarding crew activities and gambling.

Secondly, it is an eventful slot with many in-game features like random multipliers, free spins with bonuses, rainbow gems, and much more. Cluster pays are unique for video slot machines, but Netent has used it well since they were first introduced with their slot, Aloha. It simply means that a cluster of five or more symbols strike a win as long as the reels touch one another. It is fun.

Poker Faces and the Saturday Night Fever

Whether you wish to go for live dealer poker or video poker, get some ambiance that breaks away from the monotony. Below are two options for each category to make your Saturday night accomplished.

  • Texas Hold’Em Poker 3D by Evoplay. Evoplay launched it as their “unique project”, where they have added a good deal of impressionable Wild West appeal. It is a 3D game for sure, but it is not just the graphics that mean the most. As a player, you can also change the angles and position of the table and enjoy a personalized experience, choosing your actions and strategy. Other than that, it is a pretty simple game with classic rules of authentic Texas Hold’em, with an RTP rate of up to  99.37% and a maximum win capped at $720.
  • Live Royal Poker by EzugiIf you are looking for a live poker session, try the rooms of Royal Poker by Ezugi. It has a friendly and interactive environment, making you comfortable with the game when you are in for a relaxing and no-fuss weekend gambling. Have your way with the double poker combination to beat against the dealer’s Ace+King combination to qualify. You can even purchase a card to assist the dealer in qualifying if you have a stronger hand.

Sundays for Multi-Wheel Roulette

Roulette lovers can get their perfect spot for a weekend session on one of those multi-wheel game tables that are way more exciting than the conventional ones. If you have not played one before, start with Microgaming’s version. It`s just a unique and exciting way of playing on eight roulette wheels simultaneously and boosting the eventfulness of the gaming session. You can enjoy and even improvise with greater depth between your Martingale or the Fibonacci strategies. Microgaming’s particular multi-wheel roulette comes with a high RTP of 97.30%, and the more wheels you play, the higher your odds.

Try All These Games at a Licenced and Regulated Canadian Casino and Chill

The best experience when enjoying a good weekend gambling is when you get the kind of casino that hosts the best weekend bonuses, tournaments, and activities to heighten the enjoyment.

Online casinos have gotten tremendously creative with their player-centric approaches. Still, it makes sense to choose the ones that promote clarity in terms of conditions and rules to focus on the gaming rather than spend half the time trying to decipher fine print.

Vulkan Bet is undoubtedly one of the best options to go for, as it is a well-regulated and licensed casino with a global outreach. Find games that make your weekends most enjoyable, the best bonuses, and unique attractions to go with them. Gamble responsibly, and have a good time.

Casino Features and Offerings on Luxury Ships

It usually impresses with its luxury and sophistication, and hundreds of people take care of creating a unique atmosphere for this type of recreation and entertainment. Every detail matters here, from furniture to lighting. All casinos on such ships have a stylish and modern look that is in line with Italian aesthetics.

Moreover, casinos usually have a large floor space. The location of such a place of entertainment is equally important. In most cases, the casino is located in the central part of the ship so that every passenger can easily get there.

An interesting part of onboard casinos is the opportunity to participate in various tournaments, events and possibility to receive free spins and welcome bonuses on the board. This adds extra adrenaline and interest to the game. As for the games, there are no less interesting offers than in traditional or online casinos. Here, everyone can play blackjack, roulette, poker, cribbage, and slot machines. Of course, these options may vary depending on the cruise ship you choose. However, not a single passenger has ever been upset with the choice and games. Feel this pleasant gaming atmosphere on board, where reliability and Italian sophistication are combined.
