I saw the Diamond twice this past week. Once in Skagway and also in Ketchikan. May is an excellent time to go. The only rain we encountered was a little drizzle early morning going through glacier bay and the other in Ketchikan. The rest of the time it was partly cloudy. Temps were in the 50's-60's. There was still snow in the mountains. Saw some wildlife including brown bears and eagles. The humpbacks are just starting to migrate back but we did see a pod plus an individual whale stunning the fish by slapping it's fins. We did see caving at Margorie Glacier. That was amazing to see. It was our first time to Alaska. We loved it.

Thanx Maureen for the info as I was hoping U would let us know how your Alaska Princess cruise went. The Glacier viewing is definitely IMO the main highlight of an Alaska cruise and with visits to College Fjord, Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier I thinks its hard to be this itinerary for the Glacier Views. Guess that's why Princess calls it the Voyage of the Glaciers. Returning to Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway will allow us to followup on some missed items from our last visit there. Having a somewhat drier view of the area will be a bonus and doubling the chance of good weather while in the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway can NOT hurt. A Pre Cruise in the Vancouver Area and sailing out of there will be an added bonus as well. :boogie: Thanx again for sharing your input on your Alaska cruise and we would love to see some photos.

and of course U know my dear DAW that U have one main objective hanging over your head and that is to get maw & paw there in one piece. That chore in itself will be worthy of at least one mudslide per day.

I am so behind on my photos. I'll get with it soon. I know you've been there before but I found renting a car in Skagway to be a great experience. I rented a full size from Avis which turned out to be a Highlander. I purchased a download called "Murray's Guide" to my ebook (it's in a PDF format) which provided information at various mile-markers. Amy's BF Drew was our "tour guide" and read allowed as we went. We drove up to Emerald Lake in the Yukon and then worked our way back. We were going to take the last train but decided against it because we went the same route the train did and beyond. The cost was minimal at $113 which included tax plus a gas fill up (less than $30 from what I remember). There's lots more to see and do by renting a car.

Thanx for the car tip Maureen. It sounds like a interesting option. As it gets closer I will have to keep an eye on the pricing.

Nice photos

They are breathtaking indeed Jeanie.

Princess has it really focused in for these cruises on what Glacier experts call the BIG Three as in BIG 3 viewing areas. Glacier Bay, College Fjord, and Hubbard Glacier offer the best display opportunities for those wishing to maximize their glacier viewing opportunities. Guess that's why Princess calls it The Voyage of the Glaciers Cruise.

Hubbard Glacier offers the largest display in size while Glacier Bay and College Fjord of multiple views of a large # of glaciers. Here are a couple of links that talk about the different glaciers available for viewing at Glacier Bay and College Fjord as well as Hubbard Glacier. Some video is also included and U may just see a familiar name in the videographer (duskbat) if U look & listen close enough.

The Best part is that on the days of the Glacier Viewings the excursion is basically brought to U as the ship circles the glaciers. So at the cost of $0 rather than having to pay $$$ to get on a ship sponsored excursion to take U to the glaciers your excursion is paid for. :boogie: All that's required is U find a good viewing location and grab whatever U wish to eat or drink
.
