It DOES! I forgot to spell it the generic way. Darn my mom! That spelling has caused me so many problems. In high school someone wrote it and with a small L and a closed up Y and a not complete A, I was registered as GEORGE. That took me three days to get worked out! I did want to stay in wood shop, but they wouldn't let me.

Hawai'ian memories

As many on C@ know, my first trip to Hawai'i dates back to 1950 (when it was the Territory of Hawai'i) - probably before most @ddicts were born! From time to time, I'll add a few snippets of memories between then and now on this Roll Call.

My late Uncle served in the Pacific during WWII, and never returned to the Mainland. He settled in Honolulu, which is one reason we would visit there regularly. He was in show business - owned a very popular nightclub in the immediate post-war period, and then pretty much settled into being a radio personality. Hawai'i became our 50th State in 1959, and the official celebrations were held July 4, 1960. We were there. He decided I should learn how to hula since I loved Hawai'ian music so much, and he arranged lessons for me during that July, 1960 visit. There were many festivities on the Islands on July 4th, and my Uncle emceed a luau at the Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu. Of course, there was the traditional food, the traditional music and dancers. The only thing that wasn't "of course" - he called me up on stage to dance the first of the hulas I had learned. I was ready to run out the nearest exit, but he coaxed me on stage...and I danced my first hula publicly - a song named "Sea Breeze". I can't find a video with the words sung, but I'll leave you with this YouTube video of the song.

That was very nice, thanks Mele Ana. What great memories you have of Hawaii. It was great of you to share them with us. I look forward to more.

Oh I did love that wee bit of Hawaiian music this morning. I could feel the soft Sea Breeze, hear the rustle of the palms and smell the fragrant plumeria! Mary Ann...can you still dance that hula???

I'm glad you liked that little snippet.

In answer to your question, Beryl, sadly I no longer have the mobility to dance the hula. I don't have the flexibility to bend my knees after my knee surgeries nor can I sway my hips gracefully with my back issues. I still pretty much remember the hand motions - the hands tell the story of the words. I used to dance hula for relaxation and exercise and at our parties, but those days are gone now with my limited mobility. However, I still love to hear traditional Hawai'ian music, particularly slack key.

I'll continue to add something on this thread every so often.

Believe it or not, I learned the hula when I was a teenager. My knees won't allow it anymore, but I still LOVE it! One of my favorite CDs is by Keali'i Reichel, and I also bought his DVD. The man has a fantastic voice and he also dances hula beautifully.

Jacquie...I love Keali'i Reichel too....and yes, he is a kumu hula....A kumu hula is someone who has been found qualified by another kumu to teach the techniques and traditions of the dance....clearly excelling in this art.

Sorry people...I know I'm not on this cruise but if Hawaii is in the title I have to check it out :) !

One of my favourite Hawaiian voices is that of Alfred Apaka (1919-1960). I purchased several of his albums following my first trip to Hawaii and I about wore them out with the playing!! I am so jealous because I know that Mary Ann met him live and in person!! His statue stands at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort and Spa on Waikiki Beach.

And I don't think we should forget to mention Israel "IZ" Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole. His music speaks to my soul and the video of White Sandy Beach always makes me laugh out loud at the end...watch for it!

I
can think of no better way to spend the time waiting to visit these wonderful islands than reading their history and listening to their music...all of it from early chants to Hapa Haole! Prepare to be embraced by the spirit of Aloha!

Mary Ann...sorry to hear that hula is no longer in your repertoire but how lovely to remember those days when you could dance and enjoy it. I'm sorry that I never learned how to dance it myself. I do love to watch traditional hula though and have much admired the photos of Kim Taylor Reece. His work truly expresses the magic of the dance.

Beryl, the title Hawaii just draws me to this thread. When I was in the Navy, we had twin Hawaiian girls in our barracks that perform the Hula for us. I love to watch them. It was beautiful.
