Emerald Waterways Welcomes New River Ship And First Ocean Yacht In 2021

As travelers weigh vacation options and start planning getaways for 2021 and beyond, small ship cruising continues to garner broad appeal. In fact, over the past 10 years, the small ship cruising sector on both oceans and rivers has seen steady growth among travelers looking for smaller, more intimate settings, personalized service and experiential tours.

As experts in designing, building and operating small ships, Emerald Waterways embraces this industry growth as they continue innovating to show their guests why small ship cruising is the future of cruise travel.

Emerald Waterways’ fleet of nine deluxe Star-Ships all carry fewer than 200 guests, fitting them comfortably into the small ship category. The largest of their river ships carries a max of 180 guests on the Danube, Rhine and Main rivers in Europe, while the smallest can accommodate just 84 along the Mekong river in Asia. The small ship designation also applies to their soon-to-debut ocean yacht. When she launches next year, Emerald Azzurra will carry just 100 guests in 50 deluxe suites on sailings in the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Red Seas, showcasing unique ports that are not over touristed. Azzurra’s innovative design will feature nearly double the dining space per guest as the competition in this category, and 88% of suites and staterooms will have balconies or terraces.

“We’re big fans of small ship cruising, so it’s exciting to see more travelers embracing it as a secure, comfortable and relaxing way to see the world,” said David Winterton, Global Brand Ambassador for Emerald Waterways. “As we continue to grow the brand and introduce new products like our ocean yacht Emerald Azzurra, we’re focused on creating the experiences our guests are asking for and that we believe will

EmeraldACTIVE

One example of Emerald Waterways responding to guest feedback was the launch of EmeraldACTIVE, a shore excursion program aimed at creating more active tour options across all their European river cruise itineraries. “Our customers tend to be a fairly active group, and we heard their call for more options to pursue their fitness goals while traveling,” said Winterton. “In 2016 we launched the EmeraldACTIVE program with a selection of guided cycle tours, urban and rural hikes and canoeing trips. In 2019, we expanded the program by adding a dedicated Activity Manager on each our of European Star-Ships to support the active excursions and expand the onboard offerings with Pilates, yoga, and water aerobics classes.”

As other cruise lines announce cancellations of new builds, Emerald Waterways continues to grow their fleet. In addition to introducing the Emerald Azzurra yacht next year, the brand will also launch a new river ship, Emerald Luna. She will carry 180 passengers on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers in Europe when she debuts in April of next year.

Emerald Cruises

Emerald Cruises is the parent brand of Emerald Waterways and the newly formed Emerald Yacht Cruises. The Emerald Azzurra, the first yacht to launch under the Emerald Yacht Cruises brand, is a 100-guest super yacht that will ply the warm waters of the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Red seas. Emerald Waterways features nine branded Star-Ships offering river sailings in Europe and on the Mekong, as well as the chartered river ship along the Volga River in Russia (MS Nizhny Novgorod). The brand offers contemporary deluxe ships, outstanding service and an incredibly inclusive pricing plan that has won them the honor of being named Best River Cruise Line for Value by the Cruise Critic Editors’ Picks Awards for five years running.

Scenic Eclipse wins ‘Expedition Cruise Initiative of the Year’ at Seatrade Cruise Awards

Scenic Neptune submarine offers glimpse into underwater worlds otherwise inaccessible

Scenic Eclipse, the World’s First Discovery Yacht, was awarded the Expedition Cruise Initiative of the Year by Seatrade. This award focuses on a company, organization or individual who has introduced an innovative concept, product, ship, shore excursion, or service specifically tailored to/for the expedition cruise sector. Scenic Eclipse was recognized for its first-of-its-kind onboard submarine, Scenic Neptune. Capable of diving up to 300 meters (980 feet), with seating for six guests, the U Boat Worx Cruise Submarine 7 was custom-built for Scenic and allows for optimal sightseeing of marine wonders, offering guests unique access to some of nature’s most beautiful sites. Its record-breaking dive in Antarctica set a new standard for expedition cruising.

A video of Scenic Neptune can be watched here:

“We have always sought to venture beyond the horizon, and with our submarine, our guests have the opportunity to enjoy access to the world’s most amazing marine environments, otherwise not available,” said Glen Moroney, Scenic Founder and Chairman. “Partnering with a world-renowned company like U Boat Worx to design a custom submersible, complete with an ultra-clear acrylic hull that allows guests to feel “at one” with the ocean, is a testament to our dedication to define exploration in the cruise industry. We are deeply honored that this initiative has been recognized by Seatrade.”
Available to guests on numerous itineraries ranging from the polar regions of the North and South poles to the warm waters of the Caribbean, the Scenic Neptune can complete 8-12 dives per day, giving many guests access to observe marine life from an underwater perspective. Outfitted with strong exterior lights, guests are able to view ship wrecks, marine life and the vibrant colors of underwater scenery. Onboard, guests enjoy internal climate control and surround sound, plenty of leg and headroom, while the three-person pods can rotate 270 degrees – so nothing will be missed. The submarine’s cabin is perfectly pressurized allowing for more time spent exploring underwater versus ascending or descending.

Scenic Neptune – Trident Wall, Port Antonio

While the Scenic Neptune in itself a state-of-the-art machine, one of the most memorable parts of the journey are the skills of the pilots who expertly navigate through some of the most beautiful and remote regions on the planet, taking care to not impact the surrounding environment and disrupt the natural habitats of sea and shore animal life. Prior to boarding the submarine, members of the ship’s Discovery Team, a highly experienced group of marine biologists, historians, ornithologists, geologists, as well as fisheries and underwater experts, share insights through lectures or destination-specific excursions on what guests can expect to see – going into detail about animals, plants and environmental features.

The Scenic Group is no stranger to being recognized for its level of service, value, offered experiences and ship design. Most recently Conde Nast Traveler readers recognized Scenic as one of the World’s Top River Cruise Lines; Cruise Critic named the Scenic Gem as the Best River Ship 2020 and Scenic Eclipse the Best New Luxury Ship 2019; and notable global wins were garnered for Best Enrichment Programs and Excursions. Emerald Waterways has also received numerous awards, most recently by Cruise Critic as the Best Value for the Money for the fifth consecutive year.

The Seatrade Awards honor excellence in all aspects of cruising including innovative concepts and designs, expedition products, destinations, cruise suppliers, and sustainability and is considered one of the industry’s premier awards. This year’s winners, announced during the Seatrade Cruise Virtual awards ceremony on Oct. 6, were determined by a panel of 14 cruise experts from across the international cruise community – and the competition was significant.

Scenic Group has grown over its 34-year history to include award-winning, all-inclusive river and ocean cruises and handcrafted land tours that take participants to many of the world’s most fascinating destinations. Since 2008, Scenic has offered river cruises in Europe, SE Asia and Russia on its 15 Space-Ships and Egypt on a luxury charter. In 2019, Scenic introduced the World’s First Discovery Yacht, the 228-guest Scenic Eclipse. Sister brand Emerald Cruises, parent brand of Emerald Waterways and the newly formed Emerald Yacht Cruises, has nine branded Star-Ships offering river sailings in Europe and on the Mekong, as well as the chartered river ship along the Volga River in Russia (MS Nizhny Novgorod). In 2021, the Emerald Azzurra will be the first yacht to launch under the Emerald Cruises brand – a 100-guest super yacht that will ply the warm waters of the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Red seas.

Carnival Cruise Line recently announced that it is cancelling the remaining cruises for the six total ships operating from PortMiami and Port Canaveral for November 2020.

It has also cancelled five cruises scheduled to operate from Sydney, Australia from Jan. 16 – Feb. 8, 2021.

Following the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) decision to extend its no-sail order for cruise operations until Oct. 31, Carnival cancelled all but PortMiami and Port Canaveral cruises for the rest of the year.  It has now determined that November 2020 operations will not be feasible.

Carnival continues to work on protocols and procedures that would allow for the resumption of cruise operations, with a gradual, phased-in approach, designating Miami and Port Canaveral as the first two homeports for embarkations.  Cruises currently scheduled for December from those two homeports remain in place for the time being while Carnival evaluates options.  However, guests booked on cruises in December out of Miami and Port Canaveral still have the ability to voluntarily cancel their reservation and receive the same offer that all other impacted guests are receiving, which includes a combination future cruise credit (FCC) and onboard credit (OBC), or a full refund.

In Australia, Carnival is notifying guests and travel agents that five cruises on Carnival Splendor from Jan. 16 – Feb. 8, 2021 have been cancelled.  Those guests will receive the same offer of the combination FCC/OBC, or a full refund.

During the socially responsible ceremony, Dutch coins minted in 1872 to honor Holland America Line’s first Rotterdam were welded to the outside deck of the ship to bring good fortune, followed by a blessing by the shipyard chaplain. In attendance were Antonio Quintano, director of the Fincantieri Marghera Shipyard; Cyril Tatar, Holland America Group’s vice president of newbuilding services; and Nico Bleichrodt, vice president, international sales, for Holland America Line.

“We are pleased to honor the coin ceremony tradition and celebrate this milestone that signals less than a year until Rotterdam‘s delivery,” said Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line. “With a name like Rotterdam, there is no other person more ideal than Mai Elmar to serve as the ship’s madrina. Mai’s name is synonymous with the cruise industry in the port city of Rotterdam and she has been a tremendous champion of our brand for decades. We’re thrilled to have her take on this special role.”

On Oct 7 Rotterdam‘s drydock will be filled with water and the ship will be floated out to begin the next stage of construction at an outfitting pier. Rotterdam is scheduled to be delivered July 30, 2021.

Madrina Mai Elmar

For many years, Elmar has dedicated much of her time to the city and port of Rotterdam. Since 2000, she has grown Cruise Port Rotterdam from zero to 102 cruise ships that have visited yearly. She was the first chief marketing officer of Rotterdam city and now serves as executive director of Cruise Port Rotterdam. Elmar was instrumental in designing the brand policy and strategy of the city. From 2011 to 2013, she was director of the ss Rotterdam, the famed hotel ship and former flagship of Holland America Line.

In 2005 Elmar was named Mrs. “Harbor Man of the Year” and received the Wolfert van Borselen medal from the mayor for her efforts for the city of Rotterdam. In 2016 she was made a Knight of the Order of Oranje Nassau, which is awarded for longstanding meritorious service to society, the State or the Royal House.

Rotterdam VII

The third in the Pinnacle Class series, Rotterdam will carry 2,668 guests, measure 99,800 gross tons and feature highly successful amenities and innovations introduced with her sister ships, including the 270-degree surround screen World Stage, Rudi’s Sel de Mer and Grand Dutch Café. Delivering the best of everything, Rotterdam celebrates live music with an exclusive collection of world-class performances each night — from Lincoln Center Stage and B.B. King’s Blues Club to Rolling Stone Rock Room and Billboard Onboard.

Throughout the ship, Rotterdam will showcase Holland America Line hallmarks that drive one of the highest guest repeat rates in the industry: exquisite cuisine guided by eight of the world’s leading chefs; gracious, award-winning service; and superbly appointed staterooms and suites, including family and single accommodations.

Rotterdam is the seventh ship to bear the name for Holland America Line and the 17th ship constructed for the brand by Italian shipyard Fincantieri, which most recently built Nieuw Statendam.

Following Rotterdam‘s Premiere Voyage departing Aug. 1, 2021, the ship will spend its inaugural summer season in northern Europe. Naming details have not been finalized and will be announced at a later date.

Carnival Cruise Line Cancels Some Cruises For November and December

Following the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) decision to extend its no-sail order for cruise operations, Carnival Cruise Line is notifying guests and travel agents that it has cancelled cruises from all U.S. homeports except Miami and Port Canaveral for November and December 2020.  While operations from Miami and Port Canaveral in November and December are still not certain, Carnival is focusing its initial return to service from those two homeports, whenever that might occur.

Carnival continues to work on protocols and procedures that would allow for the resumption of cruise operations, with a gradual, phased-in approach, designating Miami and Port Canaveral as the first two homeports for embarkations.  Cruises currently scheduled for November and December from those two homeports will remain in place for the time being while Carnival evaluates options.  However, the cruise line is providing guests booked on cruises in November and December out of Miami and Port Canaveral the ability to voluntarily cancel their reservation and receive the same offer that all other impacted guests are receiving, which includes a combination future cruise credit and onboard credit, or a full refund.

“As we have said throughout this pause, our return to operations will be gradual and phased in.  And while we are not making any presumptions, once cruising is allowed, we will center our initial start-up from the homeports of Miami and Port Canaveral,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.  “The health and safety of our guests, crew and communities we serve remain the cornerstone of our plans and decisions.  The patience and support of our guests and travel agent partners have been a huge motivation to our team as we have worked through this unprecedented situation and we are dedicated to getting back to operations when the time is right.”
