Norwegian Cruise Line Founder Knut Kloster Honored

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. solemnly marks the passing on Sept. 20, 2020 of one of its founders, Knut Kloster, at the age of 91. In his honor the Company will dedicate a section of its yet-to-open terminal at PortMiami in Miami, Fla. and introduce an annual team member recognition award in memory of his humanitarian, environmentalist and innovative spirit.

“We are incredibly saddened by the loss of the visionary who not only brought our Company, but our
industry, to life,” said Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings President and CEO Frank Del Rio. “Knut was a
pioneer in our industry and certainly ahead of his time, exploring every opportunity to be at the forefront
and break boundaries. His passion went beyond cruising with contributions to social, cultural, humanitarian
and environmental causes worldwide.”

Kloster’s influence on the Company and the industry is profound. Starting in 1966, he tapped into America’s
growing demand for international travel by offering roundtrip cruises from the then-nascent Port of Miami
on the 550-passenger M/S Sunward, in the process creating the modern cruise industry we know today.
His innovations continued, founding the industry’s first private island in Great Stirrup Cay and launching the
industry’s first mega-ship in the Caribbean with the SS Norway.

Born in Oslo, Norway in 1929, Kloster became head of his family’s shipping company at an early age. In
an effort to diversify, he expanded operations to include a passenger ship to sail voyages in Gibraltar and
Morocco was complicated by geopolitical events in the region. He would receive a fortuitous
communication from one Ted Arison, inviting him to come to Miami to inspect the facilities and perhaps
reposition his M/S Sunward to the Caribbean. Norwegian Caribbean Lines was soon formed and in
December 1966, the first voyage from Miami, FL to Nassau, the Bahamas departed, ushering in a new era
of cruising.

Despite being a titan of the industry, he was most renowned for his extraordinary character; he espoused
an unwavering belief that lasting commercial success rested in social and environmental responsibility as
much as in financial accountability.

In addition to his deep appreciation and care for the environment, Kloster was a humanitarian. With crews
hailing from multinational backgrounds, he developed a culture of inclusion and understanding on board
his ships. For his efforts, he received permission from the United Nations to fly its flag atop SS Norway’s
mast.

Del Rio added, “Knut Kloster’s legacy lives on throughout the cruise industry with every new vessel that is
launched and every new innovation that is introduced. It is with great pride and a tremendous sense of
responsibility, that we carry on with the vision he created many years ago. The design for the Pearl of
Miami, our iconic, state-of-the-art terminal at PortMiami, took inspiration from the “white ships” that defined
our Company’s growth in the late 1960s, so it is only fitting that we dedicate the main hall of the Pearl of
Miami as Kloster Hall in his memory. Mr. Kloster’s biggest contribution to our Company and the industry
was his penchant for innovation and I am proud to establish the Knut Kloster Team Member Award for
Innovation, a $10,000 award to be presented annually to a shipside or shoreside team member who has
consistently demonstrated our Company’s ideals of innovation.”

Sun Princess and Sea Princess to Leave Princess Cruises Fleet

Sea Princess

Princess Cruises has announced the sale of two of its ships, Sun Princess and Sea Princess, to undisclosed buyers. The sale of these vessels is in line with parent company Carnival Corporation’s plan to accelerate the removal of less efficient ships from its fleet.

“Sun Princess and Sea Princess contributed to significant growth in Australian cruising,” said Princess Cruises president Jan Swartz. “Both ships defined the premium cruise experience with Australians and New Zealanders spending close to 14 million nights aboard these ships. While it is never easy to say goodbye to any ship in our fleet, this will allow us to deploy newer ships enhancing our offerings for Australia cruisers and focus on bringing into service exciting newbuilds like the upcoming delivery of Enchanted Princess.”

The first ship in the Sun Class, Sun Princess was introduced in 1995 debuting in the Caribbean and was amongst the largest ships in the world at the time. The 2,000-guest Sun Princess also sailed in Alaska and Panama Canal, among other destinations, before being homeported in Australia in October 2007. Sun Princess also helped us open the Japanese market in 2013 as the first foreign-flagged cruise ship to offer cruises designed specifically for the Japanese.

The 2,000-guest Sea Princess became synonymous with World Cruises, having completed six full world cruises since 2013. During her time-based in Australia, Sea Princess traveled the equivalent of 35 times around the world. Prior to joining Sun Princess in Australia, Sea Princess sailed in Europe and Alaska as well as the Caribbean, including serving as a homeport ship in Barbados in the mid- to late-2000s.

Due to the imminent departure of these two ships from the fleet, Princess Cruises will cancel published itineraries which include:

  •   Sun Princess sailings from December 28, 2020 through August 14, 2021
  •   Sea Princess sailings from December 23, 2020 through November 9, 2021

Guests with bookings will be notified, and along with their travel advisors, will receive information on how to book another Princess Cruise when operations resume. Guests who prefer a refund will be accommodated.

AmaWaterways has announced updates to the resumption of its regularly scheduled 2020 sailing season. The official statement, delivered by AmaWaterways President and Co-founder Rudi Schreiner, is as follows:

“The U.S. and Canadian markets make up 95% of our guests, and there are still many restrictions affecting North American residents ability to travel internationally. As a result, we have extended the suspension of our regular program of river cruises in Europe, Africa and Asia through November 15, 2020. We are in the process of proactively contacting all travel advisors with clients affected by this new suspension date, providing them with options best-suited to their clients’ needs.

This suspension does not apply to the series of chartered Rhine sailings that was launched in July in collaboration with German tour operator, e-hoi.  Due to the success of these sailings and the consistent, positive feedback received from our German-speaking guests, including the enhanced health and safety protocols, e-hoi has decided to extend their sailing schedule through the end of the year.

We continue to monitor government and health authorities, including European Union restrictions which are updated every two weeks.  Our ships and crew remain on standby to welcome travelers on our regular scheduled sailings once these restrictions are lifted.”

Travel advisors are encouraged to visit AmaWaterways.com/travel-updates for more information and current terms and conditions associated with the suspended river cruises. Additionally, FAQs are posted at AmaWaterways.com/travel-FAQ.

Rosen Hotels & Resorts Reopens Clarion Inn Lake Buena Vista in Central Florida As Rebranded Rosen Inn Lake Buena Vista

The Rebranded Rosen Inn Lake Buena Vista is set to open on Oct 1, 2020

On May 15, 1987, renowned Orlando hotelier and philanthropist Harris Rosen opened his fourth hotel in the now eight-hotel Rosen Hotels & Resorts collection in Orlando. The then 320-room Comfort Inn Lake Buena Vista (now 640 guestrooms and the Clarion Inn Lake Buena Vista) opened and maintained an unheard-of 100 percent occupancy for five straight years. The secret?

“We simply deployed a flashing billboard along Interstate 4 reading ‘Best Rates in Town,’” said Rosen.

Guests flocked to the property just a few miles from Walt Disney World Resort. The hotel reached maximum capacity on opening night. Rosen himself stood in the parking lot re-directing overflow guests to his three other Rosen hotels – the now Rosen Inn InternationalRosen Inn closest to Universal, and the Rosen Inn Pointe Orlando, all on International Drive.

Harris Rosen in 1987 in front of his new Comfort Inn Lake Buena Vista.

“That property ran at 100 percent occupancy for five consecutive years,” said Rosen. “It is one of my proudest accomplishments as a hotelier.” And just one of the many reasons why Rosen’s hospitality acumen is revered world-wide.

The Comfort Inn Lake Buena Vista quickly expanded to 640 guestrooms and became the Clarion Inn Lake Buena Vista on Dec. 10, 2009. And now, is ready to stand on its own within the Rosen brand as the Rosen Inn Lake Buena Vista.

“I am grateful for the Comfort Inn and Clarion Inn names and the brand awareness they afforded me as I grew my collection of Central Florida hotels,” said Rosen. “Despite the recent pandemic, we have been planning this rebranding for close to two years. And do not want to wait any longer to unveil another Rosen Inn hotel as we reopen amidst the current pandemic.

Ozzie's Splash Zone
With an ideal location just minutes to Walt Disney World Resorts, the Rosen Inn Lake Buena Vista puts families first with plenty of outdoor water fun including Ozzie’s Splash Zone.

“The Rosen Inn brand is built on family,” said Rosen. “It is the culmination of a lifelong dream to have all of my hotels under one umbrella where families – from our guests to our own Rosen family of associates – are paramount. While we have combined the best practices culled through years in the industry to create the best accommodations’ experience in Orlando, we are most proud of the heart of our company and our valued associates who are dedicated to welcoming our guests to a true home away from home. I’m most certain this is why we enjoy seeing so many of the same smiling faces from all over the country and the world returning each year to our humble properties.”

With six of Rosen’s hotels on International Drive, with the 1501-room Rosen Shingle Creek luxury hotel with 524,000 sq. ft. of meeting and event space on Universal Blvd. less than two miles away, the property within Lake Buena Vista has always been the “lone ranger.”

“I purchased this hotel so that I would have one within my collection that accommodated the Walt Disney World guest and the many families looking for affordable accommodations during their Disney stays,” said Rosen, who was director of hotel planning when Walt Disney World opened in 1971 and was instrumental in the pre-opening design and success of Disney’s Contemporary and Polynesian resorts.

As a Disney Good Neighbor Hotel, when the rebranded Rosen Inn Lake Buena Vista reopens on Oct. 1, 2020, it will continue to offer the identical exemplary opportunities such as free parking and free Wi-fi in guestrooms, while never a resort fee. And plenty of room to roam among its 23 acres that offers water features throughout, including a children’s splash zone play area and covered lakeside picnic area.

A new “VIP Perks Program” offers guests, including those on the Choice Hotels’ points program, an opportunity to receive plenty of savings at the newly-branded property. Guests also can book the new Fun-Cation getaway with rates starting at just $59 a night, plus tax, that includes exclusive buy-one-get-one-free offers at area attractions.* Walkable to much of the area’s shopping, dining, and sights, the pristine hotel also is home to Bella Vista, a Rosen venue ballroom and a local favorite for intimate weddings and celebrations, small meetings, and more.

“We are so honored to be part of the Central Florida hotel landscape and cannot wait to welcome our guests back to the hotel as a Rosen Inn when we reopen on Oct. 1,” said General Manager Bob Coletti, a twenty-plus-year Rosen associate. “While our dedication to an exemplary guest experience has never wavered, we are excited to now be part of the Rosen brand and to welcome guests who will readily recognize the attributes the Rosen name provides.”

Rosen Inn Lake Buena Vista guests can enjoy their stay with peace of mind with Rosen’s Total Commitment™, a guest and associate safety and well-being initiative implementing the highest standards of cleanliness and security. Jointly developed with the healthcare professionals at the Rosen Medical Center, the hotel’s general manager and department heads and the corporate risk management team, the program has transformed the consistently spotless properties at every level with new measures, vetted and tested for the utmost effectiveness in line with the CDC requirements for COVID-19.

New measures include social distancing parameters and easily-accessible hand sanitizers found throughout the hotel. Hospital-grade disinfectants designed to kill viruses will be administered through touchless electrostatic sprayers to continuously and thoroughly sanitize each guestroom. Temperatures will be taken at guest and associate entrances for swift and effortless coronavirus screening. For additional measures and program details, visit Rosen’s Total Commitment.

Why Travel to Goa in India?

India is a mystical country with a lot of exotic places and cultural elements to remember long after. Its long history and cultural heritage are the things that attract the visitor’s eye and make him visit this country. Its beauties are unmatched, and its cultural identity is so unique that became influential all around the world. After all, not many countries have that many things to offer to visitors, which is why many traveling lists include India as the top destinations to visit in the world.

When you blend two amazing cultural phenomena, having in mind the Indian and the Portuguese, then you get Goa, a city in India with a blend of cultures and spices. Having a bit from here and there creates a very unique atmosphere combining the best from both worlds. Goa is a city on the coastline, with a pleasant climate, delicious seafood, and a lot of spirituality. As some call it, it’s a pocket-size paradise. A traveler has everything he needs for the perfect vacation. It’s enough exotic and enough commercial to satisfy both worlds, peace-seekers and euphoria enthusiasts. Here are a few small yet effective tips to make your trip to Goa a one to remember. Here they are.

A Short History of Goa

Goa has been a Portuguese colony for more than 350 years. Its history and culture differ a lot from the part in India that was under British Ray’s influence. The majority of the population is Christian and most of them speak Portuguese. This European spirit gives this Indian city a very distinct atmosphere that can only be felt here, in Goa. However, the Hindi population is the majority of Goa’s population of more than 66%. Goa isn’t ashamed of its diversity. On the contrary, this cultural mix is what makes Goa such a beautiful place to visit. In late 1960, many international products were brought to Goa, and this trade influence has internationalized the place to a high extent. Today, Goa is a place for everyone, rich and poor, young and old.

Things to Know About Goa

Like every other place, there are some periods of the year when the city literally blossoms. When it comes to Goa, the period from June to September is the perfect timing for a visit. Entertainment-seekers will be happy to know that Goa Casino is the biggest in the country with games like those at Casimba Casino. However, many visitors decide to visit Goa in winter when Christmas and New Year celebrations take place in the streets of Goa. It’s also the perfect timing to catch the Sunburn and Supersonic festival that is taking place in Goa every year.

The state of Goa is divided into two districts: South and North Goa. The sandy beaches, the delicious food, beach parties, who can ask for more. The beaches in the South are known for the calamity and are perfect for relaxing yourself, while the North of Goa is full of people, the streets are busy and the music is loud. The choice is yours, and it depends on your personal preference for what you want to get from the trip.

Carnival Cruise Line Sells Two Ships and Announces Four Won’t Return Until 2021

Carnival Cruise Line has announced the sale of Carnival Fascination and Carnival Imagination, which had previously been put on long-term lay-up status and removed from published itineraries.

The sale of Carnival Fascination, launched in 1994, and Carnival Imagination, introduced in 1995, is in line with Carnival Corporation’s plan to accelerate the removal of less efficient ships from its fleet.  This follows the sale of Carnival Fantasy and Carnival Inspiration which took place in July.

Upon return to operations, Carnival will still operate four upgraded Fantasy-class ships – Carnival Ecstasy, Carnival Sensation, Carnival Elation and Carnival Paradise – which feature additional balcony staterooms as well as enhanced dining and entertainment options that are part of the line’s Fun Ship 2.0 enhancement program.

“While we are sad to see  Carnival Fascination and Carnival Imagination leave our fleet, it is a necessary move as it allows us to focus on ships that offer the greatest variety of features and stateroom accommodations for our guests,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

Related to its ongoing ship enhancement program and the current pause in cruise operations, Carnival also advised guests and travel agents that it is delaying the return to guest operations for four ships until after scheduled dry dock enhancements are completed in the first half of 2021.

The four impacted ships and resulting cancelled itineraries include:

“This extended pause in our operations has also impacted shipyard availability, and we’ve had to reschedule required dry docks.  As we continue to work through issues related to our eventual return to operations, we are committed to providing our guests and travel agent partners with certainty where we can, although we regret disappointing our guests.  We appreciate the continued support and understanding of our guests and hope to welcome them back onboard soon,” Duffy said.

Costa Cruises Restarts Sailing With AIDA Cruises To Follow

Costa Smeralda
Costa Smeralda

Two cruise line brands from Carnival Corporation plan to resume sailing operations, with Italy-based Costa Cruises restarted this past weekend sailing in Italy this Sunday, Sept. 6 followed by Germany-based AIDA Cruises scheduled to resume on Nov. 1.

The brands will begin in a gradual, phased-in manner with six initial ships and limited itineraries, becoming the first two of the company’s nine global cruise line brands to resume operations. The initial cruises will take place with adjusted passenger capacity and enhanced health protocols developed with government and health authorities to follow shoreside mitigation guidelines.

Costa Cruises is restarting sailing with two initial ships departing from Italian ports beginning Sept. 6. Costa Deliziosa will offer weekly cruises from Trieste on Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27, visiting five destinations in southern Italy, including Bari and Brindisi in Puglia, Corigliano-Rossano in Calabria, and Siracusa and Catania in Sicily. Costa Diadema will follow on Sept. 19 from Genoa, calling at Italian ports in the western Mediterranean, including Civitavecchia/Rome, Naples, Palermo, Cagliari and La Spezia. The one-week itineraries are being reserved exclusively for Italian guests.

AIDA Cruises will resume its cruise operations with two of its ships, sailing from the Canary Islands in November 2020, followed by an additional two ships departing from the western Mediterranean and United Arab Emirates beginning in December 2020. The first of the brand’s cruises is set to begin Nov. 1, with seven-day voyages to and departures from Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, with AIDAmar, followed by sailings from Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife with AIDAperla on Nov. 7. In December, AIDA Cruises will resume sailing operations in the Western Mediterranean with AIDAstella departing on seven-day cruises from Palma, Mallorca, beginning Dec. 12. Additionally, AIDAprima will offer seven-day cruises from Dubai starting Dec. 11 and from Abu Dhabi beginning Dec. 15.

In working with global and national health authorities and medical experts, Costa Cruises and AIDA Cruises have developed a comprehensive set of health and hygiene protocols to help facilitate a safe, healthy return to cruise vacations. Both brands are providing guests with detailed information about enhanced restart protocols, which will continue to be modeled after shoreside health and mitigation guidelines as defined by each brand’s respective county, and approved by the flag state, Italy. Protocols will be updated based on evolving scientific and medical knowledge related to mitigation strategies.

Costa Cruises has developed the Costa Safety Protocol for its fleet, including new operating procedures supported by independent scientific experts in public health and consistent with the health protocols defined by the Italian Government and European authorities. The comprehensive set of measures and procedures cover key areas such as crew health and safety, the booking process, guest activities, entertainment and dining, and medical care on board, as well as pre-boarding, embarking and disembarking operations, which will include testing for all guests prior to embarkation. Additional information on the Costa Safety Protocol is available here.

“”Our highest responsibilities and top priorities are always compliance, protecting the environment, and the health, safety and well-being of our guests, the communities we visit and our crew,” said Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Corporation. “We are engaged with a large number of medical experts and scientists around the world, and they are providing us with extremely valuable insight that we are using to develop new and enhanced protocols that are in the best interest of our guests, crew and overall public health. In areas of the world where community spread is largely mitigated and authorities are supportive of a gradual return to service over time, we look forward to again welcoming guests on board.”

More broadly, as the understanding of COVID-19 continues to evolve, Carnival Corporation has been working with a number of world-leading public health, epidemiological and policy experts to support its ongoing efforts for developing enhanced protocols and procedures for the return of cruise vacations. Among the experts are:

  • Dr. Simon Clarke, associate professor in cellular microbiology, University of Reading School of Biological Sciences (UK)
  • Michael S. Diamond, MD, PhD, Herbert S. Gasser professor of medicine, molecular microbiology, pathology & immunology; and associate director, Center for Human Immunology and Immunotherapy Programs, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis
  • Michael Z. Lin, MD, PhD, associate professor of neurobiology, bioengineering, and chemical and systems biology; and principal investigator, The Lin Lab, Stanford University School of Medicine
  • Dr. Jewel Mullen, MD, MPH, associate dean for health equity, University of Texas at Austin, Dell Medical School
  • Emil C. Reisinger, MD, full professor of internal medicine, infectious diseases and tropical medicine and director of the Division of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Rostock, Germany
  • Dr. Stefano Vella, MD, former director, National Center for Global Health, Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Italian National Institute of Health); and adjunct professor of global health, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Catholic University of the Sacred Heart) in Rome

These advisors and others have been working with the company and its brands to review existing and enhanced procedures and provide supplemental advice based on the latest scientific evidence and best practices for protection and mitigation.

Carnival Celebration Is The Name For Carnival Cruise Line’s Newest Ship

With the help of celebrity partners past and present, Carnival Cruise Line has announced that its next Excel-class ship arriving in 2022 to coincide with its 50th birthday celebration will be named “Carnival Celebration.”

A full roster of Carnival partners, including Kathie Lee Gifford, Guy Fieri and Shaquille O’Neal, unwrapped boxes that revealed the letters of the Celebration name, which is both a throwback to one of the popular early ships in the Carnival fleet, as well as a recognition of Carnival’s 50th birthday celebration that will take place in 2022 when the new Carnival Celebration will join the fleet.  The video announcement was made across Carnival’s social media channels and can be viewed here.

Carnival Celebration will debut from PortMiami in November 2022 and will be a sister ship to Mardi Gras, the first in the Excel series scheduled to enter service on Feb. 6, 2021 from Port Canaveral, Fla. The addition of the Carnival Celebration to Miami will maintain PortMiami’s position as the top embarkation port for Carnival Cruise Line.

“The name Carnival Celebration couldn’t be more perfect for a ship that will be a key component of our 50th Birthday festivities,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.  “Many thanks to our celebrity partners who helped us officially ‘unbox the fun’ and reveal the name of a ship that promises to be a spectacular addition to our fleet. Carnival Celebration is our 50th Birthday present to our guests!”

Carnival Celebration will include many of the features that have made Mardi Gras one of the most anticipated ships in cruising, including BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, along with some unique design features created specifically for this vessel.

Seabourn Announces Upcoming Voyage Cancellations For Three Ships

Seabourn Venture
Seabourn Venture

Seabourn has announced today that it will cancel upcoming voyages for three cruise ships in its fleet as a part of its pause in global ship operations.

The announcement applies to Seabourn Encore, Seabourn Ovation, and Seabourn Sojourn with each ship having a different “effective through” date. Specific details are as follows:

The brand had previously announced a pause in its global ship operations from March 14 to November 20, 2020, depending on the ship, effectively cancelling all voyages scheduled to operate during that timeframe. The decision to cancel additional voyages is a proactive action to deal with the circumstances continuing to evolve from the global response to the COVID-19 situation.

“We’ve been saying for some time that our resumption of service will come gradually, and this action reflects that discussion. The health, safety and well-being of our guests, crew and the people in destinations we visit remain a top priority,” said Josh Leibowitz, president of Seabourn. “”Like many who watch the travel industry, we are encouraged by the signs emerging around the world that point to travel’s progress toward return. When our expert science and medical advisors and our destinations support the ability to resume travel on Seabourn, we’ll be ready.”

Seabourn will be communicating changes for voyages scheduled to depart in the extension timeframe with all booked guests and their travel advisors.

Guests currently confirmed on Seabourn Sojourn’s 2021 World Cruise will be automatically re-accommodated in the same suite on Seabourn Sojourn’s 2022 World Cruise, at rate paid, within 30 days.

Guests with impacted cruises (except World Cruise 2021) will automatically be canceled and all guests will receive Bonus Future Cruise Credits. They can also request a full refund of monies paid to Seabourn. Specific details are as follows:

  • Paid in Full: those guests paid in full will receive 125% Future Cruise Credit of the base cruise fare paid to Seabourn. Guests can also request a full refund of the monies paid to Seabourn.
  • Under Deposit: those guests with bookings under deposit will receive a Future Cruise Credit valued at 125% of the deposit amount paid. Guests can also request a full refund of the monies paid to Seabourn.

The Future Cruise Credit is valid for 12 months from the date of issue and may be used to book sailings departing through Dec. 31, 2022. The amount of non-cruise fare purchases may be transferred to a new booking. Alternatively, guests may request a refund of the monies paid to Seabourn, which will be reimbursed to the original form of payment.

Guests and their travel advisors will be sent specific details applicable to their booking. Seabourn asks guests and travel advisors to use the online resources available on its website first rather than calling the Reservation Call Center for information about the cancellations due to the possibility of high call volumes and the potential of long on-hold wait times.

For reservations or more information about Seabourn, please contact Seabourn at 1-800-929-9391 or visit www.seabourn.com.
