Bingo Mama Duck! Wow, good looking and fast too!

33-2 is indeed the Ryugyong Hotel (Pyongyang, North Korea). The Ryugyong Hotel (sometimes anglicized as Ryu-Gyong Hotel or Yu-Kyung Hotel) is a skyscraper intended for use as a hotel in Sojang-dong, in the Potong-gang District of Pyongyang, North Korea. The hotel's name comes from one of the historic names for Pyongyang: Ryugyong, or "capital of willows". Its 105 stories rise to a height of 330 m (1,083 ft), and it contains 360,000 m² (3.9 million square feet) of floor space, making it the most prominent feature of the city’s skyline and by far the largest structure in the country. It is currently the world's 28th tallest building. At one time, it would have been the world's tallest hotel.

Construction began in 1987 and ceased in 1992, due to the government's financial difficulties. Though the basic structure was complete when construction came to a halt, the building shell has sat vacant and without windows, fixtures, or fittings for 16 years.

Even though the hotel dominates the Pyongyang skyline, it was nearly impossible to get anyone to talk about it. Former CNN reporter Mike Chinoy likened it to the giant calcium deposit on the neck of late dictator Kim Il-sung. Like the Ryugyong, the growth was clearly visible despite official attempts to hide it from view. The problems associated with the hotel led some media sources to dub it "The Worst Building in the World."

After 16 years of inactivity, foreign residents in Pyongyang noted that Egypt's Orascom Group started refurbishing the top floors of the hotel in April 2008. Though the effect on the architecture has yet to be determined, glass paneling and telecommunications antennas were observed being installed. The Orascom Telecom subsidiary of the group confirmed involvement in the structure to begin developing GSM infrastructure in North Korea for up to 100,000 initial subscribers. Only government officials are currently permitted to use mobile phones and the service has been banned from use by ordinary citizens and foreigners since 2002.

In September 2008, a senior North Korean official said the refurbishing of the Ryugyong Hotel will be done by 2012 - the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung. At the same time, an Orascom company official said the goal of the project was to at least give the structure's facade a facelift and make it more attractive.

London's new City Hall (aka: The Glass Egg) ws built in 2000-2002 at a cost of £43,000,000. It's 10 stories tall and is located at The Queen's Walk. In a capital bristling with historic significant stone architecture, the use of this glass and steel orb as the seat of city government may seem strange, but the reason is simple -- London didn't have a mayor from 1988 to 2002. This building was erected specifically for the purpose of housing the central authority, and constructed at a time when London was embracing glass and steel as the hallmark of the new millennium.

The glass is unavoidable, surrounding visitors, politicians, and civic leaders. They are able to look out not just upon the popular London core, but around in all directions over their domain. Perhaps the transparency will worth both ways, reminding the people inside that they serve the people outside. The main feature of the interior is the grand debating chamber, which looks up into a soaring spiral stairwell. At the top of the building is an open-air viewing platform.

The shape of the building is not something simple like a sphere, or an egg. It is something akin to a drop of water being blown over by a puff of air. Each level is offset slightly from the one below, hanging over one side of the building. The result is a slightly curving side, and a rapidly curving side. This is an energy-saving feature, as the building is angled to take advantage of sunlight in the winter, and avoid it in the summer. There is also a below-grade ampitheatrer, which makes the building appear as if it is rising from a hole.

The first mayor to have his offices in this building was Ken Livingstone. 23 July, 2002 - Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh officially open the new city hall. The mayors of Paris and Berlin also attended the ceremony.

There are a lot of people who come in to the store on a regular basis who ask about my countdown. Funny thing, those are the cruisers. Others are amazed I would countdown the days, but cruisers understand...

Day 32 and the flock is well underway in the packing department. Time to get those last pre-cruise chores done.

Yesterday, Mama Duck blasted the answers out very shortly after I posted, so I waited a bit to give those who actually sleep at night a chance to guess/research ......

What, and where, are these curious buildings?
