Hopefully, Tobyn will chime in on this, but mosquitos are inland. I've been to Alaska almost every month May through September (mostly May by choice) and have never encountered mosquitos around the port areas.

I've bought plastic hooded ponchos (yellow, of course) for everyone so you'll have quick protection if needed. And if we have beautiful weather, you'll have another piece of ducky stuff to haul back with you. :grin

Well, I can't to say there are NO mosquitoes at the ports we will be visiting, but I can confirm they are definitely more of a problem inland where it is not as breezy. We did not have a problem with them last September on our cruise. I will not be carrying any bug dope. But then I don't use any here at home either . . . . . I just cuss and swat! :lol :lol

Ponchos too Mary Ann? Holy Moly! We had already purchased our $1.00 ponchos from a local store for just in case . . . . .

I liked the highway exits better! :lol :dizzy :lol

I can go back to them, if you prefer ..... Seriously, not a problem. I'm pretty good at following instructions (except for that one about, "Calgon. Take a seat in the Duck-A-Pault!" That one? Mmmmmmmmmmmmm ... I'll have to see how well GloBug flies first!

Calgon - please post what YOU want. I was teasing. Those buildings are a brain workout.

Have grandson who wears a size 13 shoe (he is 15) and I am having trouble finding socks large enough. Any suggestions as to where I can find larger socks? Thank you.

ginnylou,

Same here ....size 13 to 14 when I was in HS. I have had luck getting at least sweat socks at either Nike or Reebok outlets, which is also where i get my casual shoes. Other option is to order on line through stores that carry Big and Tall like JC Penny, Kohl's etc.... Dress shoes I order on line when I need em, and thanklfully that is not too often as I dress casual 99% of the time.

For anyone interested, there is a Post Office in Skagway, our last port in Alaska. We couldn't find anything close for FedEx or UPS.

Quack Quack thanks for the yellow duckie rain gear-so tossing out the heavy tote sets I ahave used on other cruises . Have decided to wait to Ketchichan and buy a new thermol jacket-I really enjoyed wearing the one I got last year does make a good suveneer. Have my Wegmans mug in suitcase now for the hot chocolate. Have formal wear hanging out to air out a little know it has been crushed clear at back of closet. Rode scooter around the house for a while to check on the charge to see if it is holding up and to practice-hadn't been on it since Feb. Thanks Mama Duck for rain wear. I have my Addicts Jacket and another white canvas Jacket which I found was very good to have last year wore it around a lot of days will go under heavier thermol one if needed. Family all tease me abt my"Blankie" this is a flannel square which comes in handy to cover legs , wrap around shoulders. It is always with me even in Caribean. Any one else got something they consider a necessary Alaskan take?

Maw - please remember that these are inexpensive plastic ponchos, but I'll have more than enough for the Duck Crew in case of need. ;)

Are you aware of "Polar Fleece"?? It's warm (not super hot, but warm), very lightweight to pack and doesn't cost an arm and a leg (wing and webbed foot?). I find a polar fleece jacket very handy for Alaska.

I have a windbreaker from WDW that I'm bringing, plus my Dennis Basso YELLOW rain jacket. I might also toss my C@ jacket in because it's an excellent "tween" jacket for not too cold, but not too hot weather!

I put a few nightshirts and my bathing suit on the packing area, so I know it's getting closer! :dance :dance :dance

When I was getting ready for my Alaska cruise last year, I was looking for a down jacket. I searched for 2 weeks, but by April they were all gone. I finally discovered a down jacket that fit me on a clearance rack at Sears. It was marked down to $49, but was missing the hood. When I asked the cashier if she could mark it down more for the missing hood, she scanned it and said that she couldn't discount it any more, it was already at $5. FIVE DOLLARS! I grabbed that jacket, threw some bills at her, and ran out of there! I love my $5 jacket, and it compresses into a flat little package with the vacuum bags. One our first Alaska cruise, Celebrity had a sale of really dumb looking but warm and toasty hats, that come down around my ears and keep me nice and warm at the glacier. I'll be packing that too!

And I've stood out on deck or on my verandah in Alaska and north of the Arctic Circle on North Cape cruises in a TEE SHIRT!

In June 05 Juneau was hot hot hot, as were all the other ports, but Hubbard Glacier was very icy cold. I liked to get up at 4am and run out to my corner aft deck and watch the fog go by on the Inside Passage. I am so looking forward to going back to that incredible part of the world.
