I missed seeing a spectacular calving (although not as amazing as the one posted) when I turned my back to get some of the wonderful soup HAL stewards were serving on deck. Thankfully, I heard it! And, my niece got a wonderful photo. I hope to have better luck this time. :)

Lisa - it's unlikely we'll get close enough to Sawyer Glacier (the subject of the video) to see a spectacle such as this, but perhaps Hubbard Glacier will cooperate!

dh missed a very big calving when the captain turned the ship away from where he was and from that time on he goes up on deck during the time we are at the glaciers so he won't miss anything. We joke that it some time sounds like gun shots in East LA, Calif.

When we were in Juneau last time, we did the shore excursion where you paddle a long canoe across Mendenhall Lake to the face of Mendenhall Glacier. We saw a few small calvings quite close up as we were only about 300 feet from the glacial face. Mendenhall doesn't usually do that much calving, and we saw plenty of that in Glacier Bay on several trips. In fact, on one cruise, we were supposed to go into College Fjord, the summer had been unseasonably warm, and there had been an earthquake earlier during that week - WAY too many huge icebergs in the fjord, so the Captain had to make the decision to stop where we were. There were icebergs as big as a house, and some which were larger than the ship. The canoe shore excursion was one of my all time favorites and I plan to do it again on this cruise. Anyone want to go?

Sis - I've been posting the weekly countdown one day early for Alaska and Hawai'i for a few weeks now. And since I was alerted that one of the countdowns was "missing", I now keep as watchful an eye as I can on the countdowns.

Most locations within 10 blocks of Pike's Market are good. Lisa, a great place for you and your family to consider is Homewood Suites. Breakfast is included in the rate and complimentary dinner from Monday through Thursday. I realize the free dinner doesn't fit in post cruise. Another hotel where friends have stayed, and liked very much, is Red Lion (downtown).

Thank you, belatedly, for this wonderful advice. We just booked for one night pre-cruise and two nights post-cruise. The extra space is very nice, especially now that we're going to be three (yikes) adults!

Lisa - glad this worked for you and your family. I still think back to the first time I met you and your family when HAL Rotterdam called at Boston...and PizzaBoy was a "little" boy. He certainly has matured into a fantastic young man. Looking forward to seeing you again next year, and finally having the opportunity to CRUISE with you!

Jim - thank you for the link. I appreciate the "homework" you're sharing with the group!
