Sorry I haven't posted earlier but things have been quite hectic over the past few weeks. As K2 posted, Rita is in a rehab facility (the one that I was in last Fall) and progressing well. We had hoped that she would go there after her original hospitalization, but at the time there wasn't a bed available for her. Instead they sent her to a facility about 10 miles away. She was there for a while but they eventually discharged her and I drove her home to our condo where we had set up a hospital bed in the ground level family room which also has a bathroom and we arranged to have home health aides 24/7. As you probably know, less than 12 hours later we had to call 911 to transport her to the hospital because she slid out of the recliner onto the floor around midnight and the aide and I were unable to get her up and on her feet. When she was admitted to the hospital, they found she had a slight case of pneumonia, blood clots in her lungs and an infection. The hospital treated her for those symptoms and when it was time to discharge her they initially suggested sending her back to the same rehab center she had been on previously. We (Kevin, Lisa and I) told them in no uncertain terms would we permit them to do that and so they agreed to send her to the facility where she is now. Things are much better and at a meeting we had today they indicated that if she continues to improve, she might be coming home in about two weeks. As I mentioned I was at Dwyer Home last Fall and many of the same people who helped me are now taking care of Rita. It was almost like Old Home Week as many of the aides and nurses recognized me (and I, them) from my time there. The facility is located in a new development that was once the South Weymouth Naval Air Station and is only six miles from our condo and half the distance that the previous facility was.
Since she was admitted, we found a one level ranch home about six miles further away, had our bid to purchase accepted and on this past Wednesday passed papers. We moved in on Thursday, thanks to herculean efforts of Kevin and Lisa, their respective spouses and the five grandkids. We will be passing papers on the condo on the fifteenth but for the time being I feel like a real estate magnate owning two homes.
The night before the move, our condo neighbors had a belated Memorial Day cookout so I had a chance to say goodbye to a great bunch of people and bring them up to date on developments. Our move only takes us about six miles away so we will be able to return occasionally to see them and they can come to our new home to visit as well. As a bonus, our best and closest friends, Rich and Dianne who originally lived across the street from us when we were first time home owners and whose kids are my kids oldest and best friends, now live only one street away from us in this 55+ community.
The kids did a tremendous job organizing the move, cleaning out the condo and making sure that things made it to the new house. Now it is simply a matter of going through the boxes of materials but the essential items are all packed and arranged.
Lots of things to arrange with the change of address and new telephone number for the land line and a new cable provider and those things plus daily commutes between here and Dwyer Home are keeping me from posting with more regularity.
