Hump-Day Quacks to everyone!
I've been working on transportation costs within, and about, The City:
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) - All BART stations sell tickets through automatic ticket machines that accept nickels, dimes, quarters and $1 coins, as well as $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills. Credit and debit cards may be used at all stations in select machines.
Sample fares - From the San Francisco International Airport to the center of The City (Embacadero, Montgomery Street, Powell Street and Civic Center stations) - $5.35
Taxi - Taxis can be hailed on the street in downtown areas although it may be easier to call for one in advance. Outside of the downtown areas and airports, calling for a cab will be necessary. Taxi fares are metered. First 1/6th mile or flag drop $2.50. Each additional 1/5th mile .40. Each minute of waiting, or traffic time delay .40. Airport Exit Surcharge $2.00. Destinations 15 miles beyond SFO or San Francisco are charged at 150% of the metered fare.
Sample fare - From the San Francisco International Airport to the center of The City is about $30-$45 .
Airport Super Shuttle - Fares vary based on distance, number of passeners and type of conveyance.
Sample fare - From the San Francisco International Airport to the center of The City:
Shared ride van (up to 7 pax): $17 for 1st pax / $10 each additional pax
Exclusive van service (up to 7 pax): $75
Exclusive van service (up to 9 pax): $75
Executive car (will call)(up to 4 pax): $60
Executive car (meet & greet)(up to 4 pax): $70
The San Francisco Municipal Railray (MUNI) operates 80 routes within the city and county of San Francisco 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with stops within 2 blocks of 90% of all residences in the city. Operating Historic streetcars, modern light rail vehicles, diesel buses, alternative fuel vehicles, electric trolley coaches, and the world famous cable cars, Muni’s fleet is among the most diverse in the world.
Finally, my favorite ... Cable Cars - Basically, there are three cable car routes in operation, and it helps to know their respective destinations. At Powell and Market streets, there is a cable car turntable which serves as the beginning stop for two lines, the Powell-Mason and Powell- Hyde lines. The Powell-Mason line begins at the Powell/ Market turntable, and the line runs from there up and over Nob Hill and down to Bay Street at Fisherman's Wharf. The Powell-Hyde line also begins at the Powell Market turntable and runs over Nob and Russian hills before ending at Aquatic Park near Ghiradelli Square. Both these lines end near Fisherman's Wharf, but at different areas, and the routes are significantly different. Paying close attention to the signs on the cable cars will help you distinguish where in Fisherman's Wharf you will find yourself. Fares are: Adults $3 each way, with a senior reduction to $1 between 9pm and 7 am. One word of warning; you have to be fully ambulatory, as the cars are not H/C accessible).
Note - MUNI Passports are perfect for visitors to the city, and allow riding on streetcars, buses, and cable cars. One-day Passports are $9, and three-day Passport $15.
