I'm happy to see that our Recon group is back - we're all waiting for your detailed, if soggy, report. I think I read where this has been the rainiest summer in AK in 39 years. Let's hope NEXT August will be the sunniest!

Seattle water front was almost as much fun as San Francisco (onece we found the easy way down and avioided the hills-did not realize how hilly Seattle was.. Everyone hs to ride the Skagway train at least once on a cruise. We chose the up and back on train was so comfortable had a disabled car with lift for scooters , had a good heater and plenty of seats. The person doing narrative well enough even Paw with no hearing aid could hear it. Niecie chose the train up and bus b ack. Do to the rain we did not go to town in Skagway shopping (one advantage of the rain to wet to run around so sved money.. Came home with my jade eskimo t go with the polar bear I got last time. Paw got the nice big totem pole he had wanted for the top of his entertainment center. Jeauneu we did the salmon bake and enjoyed it even if rain was pouring down and I buried scooter in gravel and they had to lift it out. They had canopies over picnic tables and out door heaters in them. That Alaskan summer brew is pretty darn good drink. I must do a whale watch tour next time I did not see a one this time rest of family saw some though. Found out Princess does have some lift for chairs and scooters in ports and when you check at tour desk even on booked ahead ones they will make arrangements for their use. More later is it too erly to start singing North to Alaska again. Quack Quack--Questions Pm me.

Welcome back, y'all!

Maw, Michael said he wants to do the train next year. Although this will be our third trip, we've never done it.

We've done the Whale Watching and Wildlife Quest twice and intend to do it again. We saw whales, porpoises, sea lions, harbor seals and, best of all, eagles. It was truly phenomenal. :thumb :thumb :thumb

According to Princess' web site, "This tour can accommodate wheelchairs but not electric scooters, due to raised doorway thresholds. Passengers with disabilities must contact the onboard Tour Office at least 48 hours prior to the excursion to ensure arrangements can be made to meet their particular needs."

The last time we went, we did the Misty Fjords excursion. When Mrs. Bruce filled out the comment card, she said they needed more mist! :lol :lol :lol :lol

It shows that it's wheelchair accessible!!!

Maw, I certainly enjoyed your review and, again, I'm delighted that all of you enjoyed yourselves.

I can highly recommend the round-trip train ride in Skagway, and I'll probably do it again next year. It's been awhile since I've taken the train. FWIW, most seem to think that the round-trip train is better than the train one-way and bus, the other. Skagway really offers a number of great tours to satisfy a number of different interests.

I do the whale-watching tour every time I'm in Juneau - love it, and highly recommend it.

Thank you Gram...I will certainly check that out. :)

We did whale watching last time with Orca. Plus we went to Mendenhall Glacier. Then in Ketchikan and Skagway we did a lot of hiking in and around town and met some of the locals. That was really nice.

Next year I would like to do the train ride up and back, and a salmon bake, or king crab meal, or both. Oink-oink :lol

I would also like to snorkel in Ketchikan - I saw that excursion through someone....I think it sounds very interesting, albeit cold. So that is in my back pocket of things to do.

For San Fran: Chinatown, SF Giants game, Ihop, Alcatraz, and whatever else gets cooked up.

Only 11 months and 3 weeks to go....we are almost there. LOL

Hump-Day Quacks to everyone!

I've been working on transportation costs within, and about, The City:

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) - All BART stations sell tickets through automatic ticket machines that accept nickels, dimes, quarters and $1 coins, as well as $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills. Credit and debit cards may be used at all stations in select machines.
Sample fares - From the San Francisco International Airport to the center of The City (Embacadero, Montgomery Street, Powell Street and Civic Center stations) - $5.35

Taxi - Taxis can be hailed on the street in downtown areas although it may be easier to call for one in advance. Outside of the downtown areas and airports, calling for a cab will be necessary. Taxi fares are metered. First 1/6th mile or flag drop $2.50. Each additional 1/5th mile .40. Each minute of waiting, or traffic time delay .40. Airport Exit Surcharge $2.00. Destinations 15 miles beyond SFO or San Francisco are charged at 150% of the metered fare.
Sample fare - From the San Francisco International Airport to the center of The City is about $30-$45 .

Airport Super Shuttle - Fares vary based on distance, number of passeners and type of conveyance.
Sample fare - From the San Francisco International Airport to the center of The City:
Shared ride van (up to 7 pax): $17 for 1st pax / $10 each additional pax
Exclusive van service (up to 7 pax): $75
Exclusive van service (up to 9 pax): $75
Executive car (will call)(up to 4 pax): $60
Executive car (meet & greet)(up to 4 pax): $70

The San Francisco Municipal Railray (MUNI) operates 80 routes within the city and county of San Francisco 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with stops within 2 blocks of 90% of all residences in the city. Operating Historic streetcars, modern light rail vehicles, diesel buses, alternative fuel vehicles, electric trolley coaches, and the world famous cable cars, Muni’s fleet is among the most diverse in the world.

Finally, my favorite ... Cable Cars - Basically, there are three cable car routes in operation, and it helps to know their respective destinations. At Powell and Market streets, there is a cable car turntable which serves as the beginning stop for two lines, the Powell-Mason and Powell- Hyde lines. The Powell-Mason line begins at the Powell/ Market turntable, and the line runs from there up and over Nob Hill and down to Bay Street at Fisherman's Wharf. The Powell-Hyde line also begins at the Powell Market turntable and runs over Nob and Russian hills before ending at Aquatic Park near Ghiradelli Square. Both these lines end near Fisherman's Wharf, but at different areas, and the routes are significantly different. Paying close attention to the signs on the cable cars will help you distinguish where in Fisherman's Wharf you will find yourself. Fares are: Adults $3 each way, with a senior reduction to $1 between 9pm and 7 am. One word of warning; you have to be fully ambulatory, as the cars are not H/C accessible).

Note - MUNI Passports are perfect for visitors to the city, and allow riding on streetcars, buses, and cable cars. One-day Passports are $9, and three-day Passport $15.

At least I'll actually get to do something in San Francisco this time. The other times I've been there have been on a bus tour when I attended an instrument school in San Jose. Gotta ride a cable car and have a hot fudge sundae at Ghiardelli, definitely. One other must do is the canoe excursion to the face of Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau. Now, if I can manage to fit both the canoe trip and the whale watch with Captain Larry in, that would be perfect. I'm thinking really hard about the glacial helicopter landing in Skagway again. Being able to go anywhere on the glacier we wanted was phenomenal, and I hope the ice cave is still there.

Corky, I would also love to go to a ball game while we are there.

Calgon, thanks for all of the research, the MUNI passports sound like the thing to do for at least 1 of the days.

Hope everyone is having a good week and QUACK QUACK to everyone!
