Newest U.S. Cruise Line Launches Boutique Flagship

America’s first premium river cruise line, French America Line, will introduce boutique U.S. river experiences with the August launch of the intimate 75-stateroom Louisiane.

Brimming with romantic joie de vivre from her home port of New Orleans, the stylishly appointed riverboat is fresh from a multi-million dollar refurbishment.

Inaugural sailings for a maximum of 150 guests with an attentive U.S. crew of 64 will begin August 22. The elegant ship celebrates regional food, music, and history during cruise tours of five to 10 days, visiting places where larger riverboats cannot navigate along the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Cumberland and Red rivers, and the Intracoastal waterways of the Gulf Coast.

“We wanted Louisiane to embody superb river experiences, including exploring many traditions that were influenced by la belle France during the early colonization of America.  It’s a wonderful narrative and quite unique compared to what is currently offered,” said Christopher Kyte, Chairman, French America Line.

“To set a new standard on U.S. waterways, we’ve orchestrated an unprecedented array of onboard services and amenities of the caliber enjoyed aboard luxury European river cruises. Our experiential hallmarks are refined French, Southern, and continental Southern food by award-winning Chef de Cuisine Regina Charboneau; daily expertly guided shore experiences enhanced with engaging talks by onboard Illuminators, and nightly best-of-America entertainment,” said Tom Markwell, President, French America Line.

Louisiane signatures include:

  • Virtually all-inclusive pricing, including all chef-designed meals, free-flowing hand-selected beverages, spirits and wines; one-night pre-cruise deluxe hotel stay with breakfast; daily Traveler Collection shore excursions; complimentary WiFi
  • 75 inviting suites and staterooms, all with plush amenities and many with verandas or French balconies
  • Two open seating dining venues, 24-hour in-room dining
  • Three lounges, complimentary nightly entertainment
  • Expert onboard illuminators offering enriching talks and chats
  • Bicycles, helmets and maps for private shore explorations
  • Onboard full service Currents Spa and healthy menu choices at every meal
  • Optional Curator Collection private shore experiences and pre- and post-cruise extension add-ons

Arrival of New Orleans’ Newest Cruise Ship Celebrated

Carnival Triumph

To celebrate the arrival of New Orleans’ newest cruise ship, Carnival Triumph, Carnival Cruise Line and the Port of New Orleans hosted an entertaining charity event today with representatives from four local music organizations competing for $35,000 in donations to music charities.

Singer Robin Barnes took first place and earned a $15,000 donation from Carnival Cruise Line for The Tipitina's Foundation.
Singer Robin Barnes took first place and earned a $15,000 donation from Carnival Cruise Line for The Tipitina’s Foundation.

Trumpeter/vocalist Shamarrt Allen, competing on behalf of the Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Jazz Camp; singer Robin Barnes, competing for the Tipitina’s Foundation; saxophonist Derek Douget, representing The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Foundation; and Rebirth Brass Band Drummer and Roots of Music Co-Founder Derrick Tabb participated in a series of hilarious “minute-to-win it” games with Tipitina’s Foundation taking home first prize of $15,000.  The other groups split $20,000 in runner-up contributions toward the charities each were representing.

Officials from Carnival Cruise Line, including Carnival Triumph Captain Alessandro Iemmi, Vice President of Commercial Port Operations Carlos Torres de Navarra and Vice President of Field Sales Mike Julius, along with Port of New Orleans President and CEO Gary LaGrange hosted a traditional maritime plaque exchange to commemorate the ship’s arrival at the port.

Carnival Triumph represents a 34 percent capacity increase on the line’s four- and five-day cruise program from New Orleans. Together with Carnival Dream, which operates year-round seven-day voyages, Carnival is expected to carry 450,000 passengers annually from the renovated Erato Street Terminal, representing the largest ever capacity commitment by a cruise line in New Orleans.

Carnival is the only cruise line to operate year-round from New Orleans and offers the widest variety of cruise durations and itinerary choices from the Big Easy, visiting tropical destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean, and the Bahamas.

New Orleans has been a valued partner for more than 20 years and today’s event was a wonderfully fun and unique way to celebrate the arrival of Carnival Triumph and support some of the city’s most treasured  music organizations,” said Torres de Navarra.  “We would like to thank our friends at the Port of New Orleans, the local community and our incredible travel agent partners for their continued support which has enabled Carnival to become the Crescent City’s number one cruise operator,” he added.

Carnival Triumph kicked off its New Orleans-based program today with a four-day cruise to Cozumel, Mexico.  On this route, four-day “long weekend” cruises depart Thursdays and call at Cozumel while five-day sailings depart Mondays and Saturdays and visit Cozumel and Progreso. Carnival Triumph will also offer a special three-day cruise round-trip from New Orleans April 8-11, 2016.

Carnival Triumph has undergone an extensive enhancement program that added a number of innovations, including Guy’s Burger Joint — developed in tandem with Food Network star Guy Fieri — poolside watering holes BlueIguana Tequila Bar and RedFrog Rum Bar, the BlueIguana Cantina Mexican eatery, cocktail pharmacy-themed Alchemy Bar, and Cherry On Top, a “candy and more” store.

Carnival Triumph also features more than 500 staterooms and suites with private balconies — highly desirable accommodation categories not generally available on other short cruises.

High-speed Wireless Internet Offered on Celebrity Cruises

Xcelerate will make it easier for guests to stay connected while on vacation, with higher-speed internet at sea that will allow for faster web browsing, accelerated page loads, and more dependable video streaming capabilities.

Xcelerate provides the type of wi-fi access that modern luxury travelers have come to expect. “Xcelerate is going to give our digitally connected guests a new opportunity to share their amazing travel experiences with the world in real time, whether docked in Europe’s sought-after ports-of-call or gliding through the ocean on all of our large ships, anywhere in the world,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, Celebrity Cruises CEO and president. “We know that this is what our guests expect – it’s what we expect when we travel, too – and we are thrilled to be answering that expectation with Xcelerate, which offers some of the fastest access at sea.”

Celebrity CruisesXcelerate is available on Celebrity Reflection and soon will roll out to the remainder of the premium cruise line’s large ships. (Celebrity Xpedition — the 100-guest ship sailing year-round in the Galápagos Islands — is not scheduled to receive Xcelerate.)

Viking Sea Sets Sail on Maiden Voyage

Today Viking Ocean Cruises announced that its second ship, Viking Sea, has embarked on her maiden voyage from Istanbul to Venice.

Viking Sea officially doubles the size of the company’s fleet and continues the cruise line’s vision for destination-focused cruises.

From Venice, Viking Sea will sail through the Mediterranean and into the Atlantic on her way to be officially christened on May 5 on London’s Thames River in Greenwich.

Following the christening, Viking Sea will spend her maiden season sailing itineraries in Scandinavia and the Baltic, as well as the Western and Eastern Mediterranean.

“Too often in recent years the most talked about ships have been the biggest ships. It is our view that some cruise lines have focused too much on building bigger ships and not enough on helping guests connect with the destination,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking Cruises. “We have created ocean cruises that put the destination at the center of the experience, with smaller ships that are smarter in design. As our second ship sets sail with her first guests, we look forward to introducing more travelers to the unique way that Viking does ocean cruising – a style of cruising that was inspired by our experience and success on the rivers.

Ships Designed for Destination Cruising
Classified by Cruise Critic as “small ships,” Viking’s ocean ships have a gross tonnage of 47,800 tons, 465 cabins, and accommodate 930 passengers. Viking Sea is the second of six ocean cruise ships on order. The third ship, Viking Sky, will be delivered in early 2017; the three remaining yet-to-be-named ships will be delivered in late 2017, 2018 and 2020, respectively.

Light-filled with modern Scandinavian décor, Viking Sea, like her sister ships, was designed by experienced nautical architects and engineers, including the same interior design team responsible for the award-winning fleet of Viking Longships®.

Throughout the ship, details were incorporated to pay homage to Nordic heritage and to help guests immerse themselves in local surroundings. A glass-backed infinity pool cantilevered off the stern offers unobstructed views; indoor-outdoor spaces offer more options for al fresco dining than any other vessel in its class; huge windows and skylights blur the lines between inside and out; and a wrap-around promenade deck nods to a bygone era of classic ocean liners.

Onboard Viking Sea, clean lines, woven textiles, and light wood evoke the Viking spirit of discovery and connection to the natural world. A carefully curated collection of Scandinavian artwork adorns the walls of the restaurants and public spaces.

In the two-deck Explorers’ Lounge at the bow of the ship, the décor was inspired by ancient Viking trade routes and navigation methods – imagery of star constellations and astronomical maps are complemented by antique globes, astrolabes, and sofas with cozy pelts.

In the LivNordic Spa, the holistic wellness philosophy of Scandinavia is in mind – from the Nordic ritual of the hydrotherapy pool and a real Snow Room, to materials inspired by Scandinavian nature: Swedish limestone and black slate; juniper and teak wood details; recycled and etched opaque glass; and cast iron.

In the Wintergarden, blonde wood “trees” stretch their branches up to the glass ceiling, forming a lattice canopy over a serene space where guests can enjoy afternoon tea. And in the Viking Living Room, a geometric garden was inspired by the wild lichen of Norway’s Finse Mountain Plateau.

Destination-Focused Enrichment
Designed for discerning travelers, Viking offers guests “the thinking person’s cruise” as an alternative to mainstream cruises. The Viking Difference is providing guests with extraordinarily well-designed cruises that bring them closer to the cultures of the world.

Itineraries are designed for maximum time in port, often with late evenings or overnights, so guests can experience local culture at night or evening performances. Ports include both cosmopolitan cities and “collector ports,” appealing to those with an interest in history, art, music, and cuisine.

While onboard, guests enjoy informative talks from local experts and carefully selected lecturers in The Theater.

Dining options onboard Viking Sea elevate food as a cultural experience – the World Café features global cuisine with live cooking and open kitchens; Mamsen’s features Norwegian deli-style fare; The Chef’s Table celebrate cuisines from around the world with multi-course tasting menus and wine parings; and Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant embraces authentic Tuscan and Roman cuisine. With the Kitchen Table experience, guests have an immersive opportunity to shop, cook, and eat with the Executive Chef.

While every cruise fare includes a guided excursion in each port, Viking’s optional excursion program was designed to provide guests with enriching experiences that go beyond the iconic and expected. Highlighted examples include:

  • Cooking with a Countess, Venice, Italy – Countessa Lelia Passi welcomes Viking guests to her home, which has been in her family for hundreds of years. In the magnificent surroundings of this lavish palace, the countess and her teaching staff share with guests the secrets of Italian cooking.
  • Sail & Swim the French Riviera, Toulon, France – Guests have the opportunity to try their hand at sailing a luxury sailboat on the Bay of Toulon. Weather permitting, the yacht will anchor in one of many small coves, where guests can relax with a drink or snack, or perhaps a swim in the warm waters of the Mediterranean.
  • A Normandy Countryside Cheese & Brandy Tasting – In the village of Pont L’Évêque, savor a special Norman lunch amidst the Calvados barrels of Les Tonneaux du Père Magloire restaurant. After your meal, you will visit the cellars to learn how apples are transformed into the “eau de vie,” the water of life—Normandy’s favorite brandy.
  • King Crab Safari, Honningsvåg, Norway – Guests set off in a deep-sea raft into the pristine waters of Sarnesfjorden, where the vistas are breathtaking, with green slopes soaring on all sides. From there, fishermen guides show guests how prized king crabs are harvested before heading back to shore, where a feast is prepared under a Sami tent.
  • Fjord Safari to a Goat Cheese Farm, Flåm, Norway – This tour provides the rare opportunity to experience Norway’s great outdoors by small boat and by hiking trail through a spectacular fjord—all rewarded with lunch at an authentic farm.
  • A Beer Lover’s Adventure & Walking Tour, Ålborg, Denmark – Guests sample some of the best-loved Danish beers on this walking tour of the district surrounding Jomfru Ane Gade, where Danes come to relax and enjoy local brews.
  • Jerusalem & Bethlehem Private TourGuests have an opportunity to tailor their exploration of Jerusalem and Bethlehem to suit their personal interests with a private guide and transportation.

Princess Cruises Announces Two New Royal Class Ship Orders

Princess Cruises - Royal Class

Princess Cruises announced that it has reached an agreement with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri S.p.A. to build two new ships, entering into service in 2019 and 2020.

The finalization of the contract follows the announcement late last year of a memorandum of agreement between Princess Cruise’s parent company, Carnival Corporation & plc and Fincantieri for five new ships including the Princess Cruises new builds.

As the world’s largest travel and leisure company, Carnival Corporation has an existing fleet of 100 cruise ships and a total of 16 new ships scheduled for delivery between 2016 and 2020.

The contract was signed on Saturday (April 2) at a ceremony at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Marghera attended by: Italian Minister of Infrastructures and Transport Graziano Delrio, Carnival Corporation Chairman Micky Arison, Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald, Fincantieri CEO Giuseppe Bono and Stein Kruse, CEO of Holland America Group, which includes Princess Cruises.

“We are incredibly proud and excited to add two new ships to our already formidable fleet,” said Jan Swartz, president of Princess Cruises.  “With this new ship commitment, Princess Cruises will continue to grow and expand globally as the world’s destination leader in premium cruising.”

The unnamed 143,700-ton, 3,560-passenger ships will be the brand’s fourth and fifth Royal-class vessels, featuring an evolution of the successful design platform used on Royal Princess, Regal Princess, and the new Majestic Princess coming in 2017.

The new Princess ships will include the signature elements that have become synonymous with the brand’s best-in-class guest experience featuring a soaring central atrium, multiple dining, entertainment and retail venues; outdoor theater experience; and 80 percent of all staterooms with balconies. The ships will also include new innovations to enhance the guest experience even further.

Specific features and amenities for the ships, along with deployment details, will be revealed soon.

Unusual Reasons To Choose Holland America For Alaska

Holland America Line dates back to 1873 when the then Dutch shipping line began transporting immigrants from the Netherlands to North America.  Part of Carnival Corporation since 1989, Holland America Line currently has 15 ships in operation with new ms Koningsdam set to launch soon.  I sailed to Alaska not long ago on ms Westerdam, round-trip Seattle and found the line’s current offering a great fit, but not for reasons one might think.

On The Way To Juneau - 138

1- Relaxed Onboard Ambience
Unique to Holland America Line to the extent that I don’t think even they know it, the atmosphere aboard ms Westerdam was relaxed and pleasant from the time I walked on the ship until the time I left.

Spinning Around In Glacier Bay - 106

Never rushed, never in a hurry, the crew on board under direction of Hotel Manager Mark Pells runs a confident onboard experience that can be as engaging (or not) as one feels comfortable with.

Sip and Savor Events - 10

2- An Extra Layer Of Excellence
I was there to take a look at their Sip, Savor, Sail program, an additional layer of culinary excellence that fit quite nicely on top of what they normally do on each and every sailing.  Food-, wine- and beer-oriented experts on board for our special sailing complemented a well-orchestrated onboard product that is a stand-alone hit with cruise travelers.  Example: A nightly Sip & Savor event is held in the ship’s Culinary Arts Center (sponsored by Food & Wine magazine) where, on any given sailing, passengers can choose to enjoy a glass of wine and an appetizer before dinner for a nominal fee.

Chef Seis Kamimura - 025

The attraction here is to get the evening started nicely with something like Pinnacle Grill Crab Cakes and the Cellar Master’s Wine Pairing ($5)  That this was a Sip, Savor, Sail event brought Seattle Space Needle Chef Jeff Maxfield, Seattle area vintner Bob Bertheau of Chateau St Michelle, Chef Seis Kamimura of Centurylink Field (home of the Seattle Seahawks) and Alaska Brewing Company’s Steve Gamba, all of whom were great hits with guests on board. No extra charge for these guys and that’s the last time I will mention them in this article.  They are not what this is about.

Sip and Savor Events - 60

3- A Great Stand Alone Value
And so it goes with Holland America Line, breaking down a number of options that carry a nominal fee, holding down prices for everyone and giving great value to those who want a bit more.   This is very much not ‘nickel and diming’ passengers. Nickel and diming  happens when passengers feel forced to pay extra for the good stuff, the best experience, food, etc.  Skip all possible options to pay extra (I did) and one can still walk away from the experience saying “That was a great deal”“.

Westerdam Ship Shots - 128

4- Going To Alaska?  Go With The Best, Often For Far Less
Holland America Line’s Alaska program offers some of, if not the best opportunities to engage the land of the midnight sun as only a line who has been there and established itself as a leader can.  Now partnering with sister line Princess Cruises, also an Alaska powerhouse, there is simply no other line that offers as many options.   That’s important because a lot of the Alaska experience happens off the ship, at additional cost.   Holland America Line’s strong Alaska presence (they have more ships there than anyone else) gets their passengers top priority on the most sought-after Alaska experiences. Pricing the 2016 Alaska season recently, Holland America Line consistently had the best pricing, especially on early and late season sailings.  Actually, they are there first and stay later than all other lines.

Spinning Around In Glacier Bay - 196

5- They Own Alaska- Check with your travel agent or just click around the Internet and see for yourself; Holland America Line and Princess Cruises pretty much own the Alaska market and compare quite favorably on pricing on a $ per person, per day basis.  Far more importantly, those dollars go farther on either line compared to competitors.  Where this comes into play and really slaps one in the face is during scenic cruising along the coast or in Glacier Bay, arguably a premiere attraction of any Alaska experience.   Here you are, sailing along the amazing majesty of Alaska for about the same price as a Caribbean cruise, seeing the same magnificent glaciers, mountains and (on a good day) wildlife for a fraction of what premium lines charge and far, far less than a land tour.

Salmon Feast - 38

6- Little Features That Can Add Up To A Great Big Wonderful Experience
Holland America Line has some unique elements not offered by other lines, worthy of mention.

  • Cruise CompeteYour Alaska Explorer is a detailed guide that highlights every day of the sailing; sort of like a diary but in advance.  This is a supplement to the ship’s daily Today On Location Program newsletter that gives an excellent overview of what to expect at each port of call and onboard as you sail along.  Each port is detailed with “Things To See”, directions on where to Shop and a unique feature “Get Out Of Town” that details features in closeby areas that passengers can see and still get back to the ship on time.
  • Easy Future Cruise Deposit Program- Like some other lines, Holland America offers a Future Cruise Program that brings a reduced deposit and onboard credit when bought on board.  Better yet, there is no standing in line to make that happen with an easy form to fill out and drop off taking care of the matter.
  • Location Guides- Like having a personal shore excursion expert in your back pocket, Holland America Line has regularly scheduled time when a location expert is available to help plan days ashore in Alaska.  The big difference I experienced: This is not a sales pitch.  These guides genuinely want to match travelers with the right experience for them, as it should be.
  • Alaska-Themed Events– Included for all passengers, a number of Alaska-themed events and enrichment activities on board.  Some examples include a Klondike Gold Rush Dinner, Meet The Glacier Bay Park Rangers, The Wonders of Glacier Bay, a Russian Heritage Event, an Alaska Salmon Bake (pictured) and more.

Crab Feast Flyby - 180

7- One Final Thought
We commonly suggest that visitor get up in the air via helicopter or airplane to see parts of Alaska just not possible to view from land.  We also suggest booking that twice as weather can often cause up in the air tours to stay down on the ground. Exactly that happened to us in Juneau, canceling our airplane flight while helicopter tours were still running.  Luckily we had paid attention to our own advice and booked another one for our stop in Ketchikan.  That one went off without a hitch and brought some great memories.   The video below, while not of our tour, gives a good idea of what to expect in a typical flightseeing tour.

Planning A Group Cruise? Be Sure You Want To Be In Charge

Group Cruise Leader

Anyone who has planned a cruise vacation, or any vacation for that matter, knows that there is a whole lot more to it that there might appear to be. Booking the cruise is just one part. Packing, getting to the ship, a budget for what to spend and being sure everyone going has the right documentation are just some of the concerns that the person in charge has to be concerned with. The larger the group, it seems, the more there is to do. Having the right person in charge can make or break the whole experience.

Before taking on the position of “leader” of your group, be it just you and one other person or 100 of your closest friends, there are some critical qualities you need to have.

  1. Good leaders know themselves, their schedule and their limitations- Unless you are making planning travel your job (like I did), you probably have other responsibilities so prioritizing your life all of the sudden becomes important.
  2. Good leaders are not power-hungry monsters– In line with #1, a good leader will not hesitate to delegate responsibility for some part or parts of the whole process to a capable group member. Like take the standard line item in any cruise plan “Getting to the pier”. There are a number of ways to do it but having the plan made, if not paid for, in advance is critical. We don’t want Lazy Susan on this.
  3. Good leaders are committed to having the best experience- Price is one thing and a big thing at that, but just one part of the whole equation. Bad Leaders focus too much on the rock-bottom low price with no regard for anything else. They want bragging rights. Good Leaders consider, hunt for and find the best value which may not be the lowest price. Example: Cheap Carla got the cruise for $800 per person from her nameless Internet Cruise Broker. Smart Susan got it for $825 but it includes better accommodations, bonus amenities and the beginnings of a long-term business relationship with a travel agent who will do her good in the future when she wants to book again.
  4. Good leaders know they don’t know everything and are not afraid to ask questions- There is a dangerous place that travelers who have previously cruised go for a while. It’s the “I have cruised therefore I know” syndrome that blinds otherwise good, sound decision-makers and turns them into know-it-all monsters. The best line I ever heard about this malady was from a 25+ years in the business travel agent who told
  5. Good leaders are open to change, know everything won’t go exactly as plannedMajor components of a cruise vacation are pretty standard from line to line and don’t vary all that much from sailing to sailing. Still, this is travel, not using the remote control, and things don’t always go as planned. Itineraries get changed, there are lines where one might not anticipate lines should be and not everyone is going to like which side of the ship is facing the dock.
  6. Good leaders are not afraid to tell group members when they are wrong– It is often hard when someone who normally takes orders from someone else is all of the sudden in charge. This is usually one of the first encounters a group leader has, when one of the members has a “better idea” that they pulled out of thin air after the group leader spent three days on the phone working out some odd little detail.
  7. Good leaders are organized- If you can’t balance your checkbook, this is not the job for you. If you are the person in your home who pays the bills (and does a good job of it), you might be a good leader.
  8. Good leaders can communicate but there is a difference between “can communicate” and are “willing to communicate to everyone even if you hate their guts otherwise” because the later is just as critical as the former. Everyone needs to know, for example, that they need a visa to board the ship in StrangePlaceistan or they will be denied boarding with no refund and have to find their own way home, at their expense. Not just your friends.
  9. Good leaders are popular and liked by group members- Nobody wants the person everyone talks about behind their backs planning their fabulous cruise vacation. There will be serious doubts as to their ability no matter how good it is.
  10. Good leaders read this whole list– because they are detail-oriented and comfortable with things like spreadsheets, email communications and lists. People that scan things for what they find interesting are the same people that think the cruise is going to be $499 and fail to add in the port charges and taxes when considering pricing information.

Cruise CompeteNot all group leaders are going to hit all these ten qualities. Some do but most don’t. It’s more important to have more of these qualities with a larger group than it is with just one or two people to be sure. Its also important to have more of these qualities when dealing with group members you are not related to as relatives are often more forgiving of the mistakes you will make than strangers are.

One last, critical part of the process is seeking the guidance of a travel professional somewhere along the line. By all rights, if you use that travel professional, pick their brains for information and book a cruise, it should be done through them. It is totally unfair and you will surely have bad things happen on your cruise vacation if you use a travel professional, gain all the knowledge they freely give you, then book online with some cruise broker just to save a little cash.

Facts:

  • That travel professional does not cost you anything.
  • You are not “eliminating the middleman” to save money by booking online.
  • In the long run, having a travel professional in your back pocket will reap you and the group huge rewards

Carnival Vista Promises More Fun, Features

Carnival Vista will be the latest, greatest ship from the cruise line that defined Fun at sea decades ago.  Kept current with a number of updating initiatives over the year, we’ve watched the evolution of that Fun as Carnival Cruise Line has grown.  Expanding their offerings to have something for nearly everyone, most of the recent updates to the Carnival onboard experience have come in the form of remodels of older ships; upgrades of existing hardware.  Taking advantage of a new ship that can be anything they want it to be, the designers of Carnival Vista have been paying attention to their passengers. Looking to launch a ship that both excites long time fans and draws in new ones, Carnival Vista has unique elements that give a glimpse of the future.

Turning It Inside Out

Cruise Compete‘Connecting passengers with the ocean’ is an over-used marketing ploy that a number of cruise lines have thrown out there for us to gobble up recently.  That usually translates to big windows or an indoor/outdoor dining, drinking or entertainment venue.  It’s an interesting way to look at things that may or may not resonate with would-be passengers, mainly because we already understand that connection.  Breaking news: we get it.  Carnival Vista heads in this direction too, but in a bold new way we have not seen elsewhere.

  • Havana Bar & Pool is an onboard retreat that’s an exclusive paradise by day and a music/dancing hotspot at night. Featuring handcrafted Cuban cocktails like the classic Mojito or traditional Daiquiri, plus fresh (free) Cuban snacks. The bar is just steps from the Havana Pool, whose ocean view and atmosphere mingles with the bar’s own, for a bit of that old-time Cuban resort flavor.
  • SportSquare has SkyGreens minature golf, a basketball court and SkyCourse ropes course.  Featured is a new SkyRide that lets passengers strap in and zip around a bike course high above the deck.
  • The Clubhouse features indoor activities like mini-bowling and arcade-style basketball with soccer, volleyball and ping-pong close by
  • Multiplex featuring IMAX brings not one but two theaters to sea.  One is a full size IMAX theater, the other a 3D Thrill Theater
  • Red Frog Pub And Brewery brings a new element to a popular onboard drinking venue that has made it’s way onto a number of Carnival Cruise Line ships throughout the fleet.  Bumping up the fun level as Carnival does, a brewery has been added that will make microbrews
  • Carnival Waterworks just gets better all the time and the facility on Carnival Vista is no exception.  An all new Kaleid-O-Slide is the new kid on the block here and said to be a must-see, from the inside where passengers zip through on rafts with lights colors and sound all around.  Think along the lines of Disney’s Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster .

Bigger And Better Than Ever

One thing Carnival learned a long long time ago on the way to perfecting Fun at sea: Don’t mess with a winner. Funny pool games still bring laughs, keeping the mood light still resonates with anyone worth resonating with and kids like water slides. Still, that does not mean they can’t improve along the way and add new elements to sure fire hit features

  • Carnival Vista’s Serenity Adults-Only Retreat has more for adults,  Moving beyond the main attraction (kids not allowed), Carnival Vista adds a chopped salad station and a large, accessible bar plus more intimate seating that will let guests connect and enjoy sea breezes and peace
  • Cherry On Top has become quite a hit on nearly every other ship in the Carnival fleet since its rollout as part of their Funship 2.0 initiative, bringing what is described as a candy-and-more-store.  Taking the pretty much dead space of the Formalities shop on older ships and prominently positioning the space on newer ones, the Carnival Vista rendition will have a premium ice cream counter with toppings for those for whom unlimited soft serve is just not enough.
  • Dr. Seuss Bookville takes the highly successful partnership between Carnival Cruise Line and edutainment icon Dr.Seuss to an entirely new space, custom designed for it, as opposed to refits of older ships on a number of lines.  On that same children’s campus, Camp Ocean breaks young cruise travelers age 2-11 down into age-based groups for appropriate interaction with each other and degreed educators who man the space.

carnival-vista-dining-horizons-restaurant-gallery-1

A Fun Lineup Of Eateries

  • Seafood Shack will feature New-England style complete meals with a view of the ocean
  • Horizons Restaurant is a main dining room with a fresh new look we have not seen on other ships as well as an attached Horizon’s bar
  • Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse continues the Carnival franchise that is pretty much the best at sea with steaks, lobster, lamb and more as well as its own full bar
  • Bonsai Sushi has proven so popular on other ships in the fleet that an expanded version is included on Carnival Vista, complete with expertly-pruned bonsai trees.
  • The Chef’s Table on Carnival Vista promises to do what other renditions of the chefs table on other lines fail to do: make it fun.  The venue itself makes the whole idea of it work, with an open kitchen and plenty of space for guests and chefs to share fun in the kitchen, as opposed so much focus on “I’m the highly skilled chef, let me impress you”
  • Ji Ji Asian Kitchen is my main number one reason for wanting to sail Carnival Vista.  I think it’s one of the best foodservice operations Carnival does and it’s only on Carnival Breeze right now.  How good is it?  When we sail Carnival Breeze, we commonly dine there multiple times on each sailing.  It’s just that good.
  • Cucina del Capitano continues the successful Italian eatery concept with similar decor and feel, tapping family albums of Carnival’s marine officers with an Italian farmhouse ambiance.
  • Guys Burger Joint continues Carnival’s association with celebrity chef Guy Fieri and a burger that has Carnival passengers lined up all day
  • BlueIguana Cantina is Carnival Vista’s taco and burrito place and a favorite Chipotle-style you pick the ingredients venue

Also featured on Carnival Vista, a variety of new stateroom configurations to compliment standard interior, oceanview, balcony and suite accommodations.  Cruise travelers who have convinced themselves that “the cabin is just a place to sleep” will probably rethink that after sailing Carnival Vista.  The standard fare looks quite comfortable and continues a Carnival tradition of having some of the roomiest living spaces at sea. Still, there are a number of featured categories that take an entirely different look at cruise ship accommodations:

  • Havana Staterooms And Suites are located close to the Havana Bar and Pool, intended for exclusive use of guests booked in this part of the ship. The main attraction and star of the show is the Havana Cabana suite
  • Family Harbor Staterooms and Suites also have a bit of exclusivity, close to the Family Harbor Lounge which is open 24 hours for breakfast, snacks during the day, games, family movies and more.  Stay here and your kids eat free in most onboard specialty restaurants.
  • Cloud 9 Spa Staterooms and Suites get priority spa reservations and more access than anyone else to all things spa

That’s a really quick rundown of interesting features coming up on new Carnival Vista. Also of interest, a variety of entertainment options, shore excursion choices and pretty much an entire re-thinking of the standard fare.  More to come.

Cruise Pricing – Some Good Points To Consider Before Buying

Going about the business of pricing a cruise seems to be done almost as many ways as there are travelers booking sometimes. In the past, some buyers would click-to-buy, others would use a travel agent, and all had different considerations when making a buying decision. Regardless of how we went about it, when all was said and done, we had a cruise booked and could look forward to a fabulous vacation. Today, the way we go about booking is changing and those stuck in the past might very well be missing out on some of the best values available.

“Consumers today are much more sensitive to price, given the economic climate. It’s natural for consumers to keep a watchful eye on their budgets during recessionary times,” Dwain Wall, Senior Vice President and General Manager of CruiseOne told me in a recent interview.

A lot of what goes into cruise line pricing strategy is based on demand and demand almost always changes over time. There are a number of factors at work here including ship positioning, the economy, the effect of new ships just entering the marketplace on the sales of older ships, and more.

Consider the price at the time of booking simply the starting price and use a travel agent to keep an eye on it.

When cruise lines were very similar, it was simply a matter of choosing a sailing that worked with our travel window and an itinerary we liked. Buying online was arguably a viable option for booking. Now, with dynamic pricing strategies, differentiated onboard programming that varies widely from line to line and many more options, booking on line is becoming more difficult all the time.

Now is the time to take another look at what cruise lines are actually offering right now vs. what your long-held beliefs are about what is happening on their ships.

Cruise CompeteIn the olden days, travel agents tried to be everything to everyone, selling any type of travel product. Most of them went broke. Today, more and more agents are becoming specialists in just cruise vacations and even specific cruise lines. That laser-sharp focus has brought better pricing, a better booking experience that often includes bonus amenities and almost always equals a better value.

Ask your travel agent what they specialize in. If they don’t say “cruises”, don’t buy from them.

Loyalty often does little more than make us feel good. That goes for travel agents as well as cruise lines. There should be no doubt in your mind about the value your travel agent adds. The same goes for cruise lines and their loyalty programs. Continuing to book with the same cruise line because some day we will get free laundry service is a horrible buying strategy. If that loyalty blinds us from other offers that may have better value, we could easily lose savings far greater than the cost savings realized by a few loads of laundry.

Speaking about cruise line loyalty programs, Wall notes “as loyal cruisers look to broaden and diversify their travel experiences, even they are more open now to enticing offers from competing cruise lines.”

Today Holland America Line took delivery of ms Koningsdam 2016, officially making it the first Pinnacle-Class ship in the fleet.

The signing ceremony took place at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in Italy. The Dutch flag was raised on the ship for the first time following the signing since Koningsdam is registered in the Netherlands.

The ship will soon make its way to Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy, for its premiere voyage departing April 8. Following a series of premiere Mediterranean voyages, Koningsdam‘s official naming ceremony will take place in Rotterdam on May 20.

“Today is a day of celebration for the entire Holland America Line family, and a milestone in our company history. We all share in this proud moment as we welcome Koningsdam to our fleet,” said Orlando Ashford, president of Holland America Line. “Koningsdam looks spectacular, beyond our expectations, and we thank all those involved for their dedication and commitment in bringing our vision to life.”

The 99,500-ton vessel accommodates 2,650 guests and is the ultimate expression of Holland America Line’s brand evolution. Koningsdam debuts several innovative concepts and new public spaces and venues while still featuring popular amenities guests associate with the cruise line.

The ship will feature Holland America Line’s first purpose-built staterooms for families and solo travelers among its 1,331 guest accommodations.

Guests will delight in new fine-dining options at alternative restaurants Sel de Mer–a French seafood brasserie–and an immersive farm-to-table concept dinner experience in the Culinary Arts Center, presented by Food & Wine magazine.
