PONANT, has announced a vaccination requirement for all guests and crew members. The new policy will complement its already comprehensive hygiene and sanitary measures in place as PONANT prepares for the resumption of sailing. PONANT’s latest protocol will require all passengers and crew members over 16 years old to be vaccinated before the cruise. Guests and crew will also need to show proof of a negative PCR test carried out within 72 hours of boarding the ship.
PONANT’s newest measures will expand on the company’s double protection principle onboard all ships. This includes screening and decontamination measures when boarding, ensuring those who board do not carry the virus, followed by on-board sanitary protocols throughout the cruise. PONANT has combined small-capacity ships, eco-design, health protocols and partnerships with local organizations, ensuring the company is well-equipped to roll out protocols quickly and efficiently. The company has also invested in state-of-the-art medical facilities on board each of its ships, including ultrasound and radiography equipment, onsite testing, and more. A medical team comprising at least one doctor and nurse are also available 24/7. The company’s complete ‘PONANT Health Protocol’ can be found here.
PONANT has also revised its booking policy to allow for greater flexibility and assurance. New bookings made before June 30, 2021 for a cruise scheduled before March 31, 2023 will only require a deposit of 25 percent. The remaining balance is due 30 days before departure, and passengers can cancel the trip up until 30 days before with the full amount being credited toward another reservation within two years of the initial departure date. In the event of a positive COVID test within 30 days of the sailing, passengers will receive a full refund at the time of cancellation. P&O Cruises new ship Iona will be officially named in a contemporary ceremony featuring a special one-off performance from Gary Barlow broadcast to a virtual audience.
Dame Irene Hays, DBE, DL, owner and chair of Hays Travel Group, will be godmother to the ship, Britain’s largest and most environmentally-friendly, in the landmark ceremony in Southampton on May 16, 2021.
Gary Barlow will perform a short set as part of the event, which will be broadcast to a VIP audience, in his role as music director. His involvement includes overseeing the ship’s 710 Club music venue and curating new talent to perform on board.
Dame Irene’s husband John, who died last November, founded Hays Travel in 1980 and it has grown to become the UK’s largest independent travel agency group. Together they were instrumental in the expansion of the Sunderland-based company and particularly in the acquisition of Bath Travel in 2013 and Thomas Cook’s retail travel agencies in 2019.
P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said “We are absolutely delighted that Dame Irene Hays will be Iona’s godmother, taking centre stage alongside Gary Barlow in a landmark naming ceremony which will be the first stepping stone on the path to the return of the UK cruise industry.
“Since the inception of Hays Travel there is no one who has been more supportive of cruising or more of an ambassador for the travel industry. As such there is no one more appropriate to name Iona in this prestigious event than Dame Irene as we celebrate her achievements.
“The travel industry as a whole has been paused for over a year and has been devastated by the events of the last 13 months. We are so immensely grateful for the support we have received from travel agents across the UK, all of whom have faced commercial challenges none of us could have imagined.
“We also feel honoured that we are able to support the Hays Travel Charitable Foundation which encourages young people to be the very best they can be across education, sport and the arts. Being able to play a small part in securing the future of the next generation is indeed a privilege.”
Iona is Britain’s most environmentally-friendly and largest cruise ship and will sail her seven night maiden voyage around the coast of the island of Iona and the Scottish Isles from Southampton on Saturday August 7, 2021. To book go to www.pocruises.com or telephone 03453 555 111 or call a trusted travel agent.

“Europe is a top travel destination, so we are very much looking forward to returning to some of our most beloved homeports, resuming those itineraries and welcoming our guests to experience a vacation of a lifetime in the safest possible manner,” said Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line. We are actively working with our local partners and government officials, as we plan for resumption of voyages in the region with Norwegian Epic and Getaway joining Norwegian Jade this summer. Relaunching Norwegian Epic and Getaway will allow us to provide a greater variety of highly sought-after itineraries for those travelers preparing to take their first cruise vacation in over a year.”

We are hopeful that we will soon welcome Norwegian Cruise Line and its guests to Barcelona.
NORWEGIAN EPIC REDESIGN
Reaffirming the Company’s commitment to elevating the guest experience at sea, the Cruise Line will debut an all-new The Haven by Norwegian complex aboard Norwegian Epic, following an extensive refurbishment in Marseille, France at the end of 2020. Norwegian Epic was the first in the fleet to premiere the Brand’s key-card access ship-within-a-ship concept in 2010, complete with private amenities, dedicated services and the most luxurious accommodations on board. The recent renovation resulted in 75 reimagined and upgraded suites combined with redesigned experiences including The Haven Restaurant and The Haven Courtyard Pool and Sundeck. Norwegian Epic features one of the largest The Haven complexes in the Norwegian fleet.
“Although we have been unable to connect with our guests at sea, we have used the last year to prepare for their return by investing in our fleet and our onboard offerings,” said Sommer. “Norwegian Epic’s redesign is a testament to our unwavering commitment to extraordinary quality and elevating the standard of excellence across our fleet.”

Eight Days of Discovery
Whether looking to explore pristine beaches with crystal blue waters or discover the history and tradition of the Middle East, there is something for everyone to discover. Highlights include:
JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA – Homeporting in this vibrant city, guests have their pick of sites to visit. AlBalad, the old town of Jeddah, dates back to the 7th century, boasts beautiful buildings, an ancient souk and a cultural melting-pot, and is one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Saudi Arabia. Jeddah is also known for its waterfront and modern shopping malls, with entertainment and activities for visitors.
RAS AL-ABYAD, SAUDI ARABIA – Known as ‘Coastal White Head,’ this port city offers azure coral seas and idyllic beaches where guests can unwind, relax and enjoy fresh seafood. With numerous scuba-diving and swimming options, guests can also enjoy their final stop sunbathing on the spotless, private Oryx Beach in front of stunning seascapes.
AQABA FOR PETRA, JORDAN – This city rests on the Red Sea coast and is a haven for divers and history buffs alike. From snorkeling in the Aqaba Marine Park to Mamluk Castle and the Aqaba Archaeological Museum, this destination can satisfy every interest. Aqaba’s proximity to Petra offers guests a chance to travel to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, inhabited since as early 7,000 BC, and discover the rare and unique rock-cut architecture.
SAFAGA FOR LUXOR, EGYPT – A short distance up the Nile River from one of Egypt’s most spectacular destinations, the small city of Safaga is the gateway to Luxor. From the ruins of the Luxor and Karnak temples to the unforgettable Necropolis — where guests find the Valley of Kings and the Valley of Queens — this is an unforgettable destination.
AL WAJH, SAUDI ARABIA – Framed by turquoise seas and 62 miles of immaculate beaches on either side, the Red Sea coastal city of AlWajh once served as one of the region’s central shipping ports. Its abandoned AlBalad old town features ancient Hejazi architecture made from Red Sea coral. It now serves as a coastal gateway to AlUla, home to Al-Hijr Archaeological Site (Madain Salih), Saudi Arabia’s cultural centrepiece and its first UNESCO World Heritage Site. The archaeological site holds more than 110 tombs carved from giant rock formations as well as ancient sites that date back to the 1st millennium BC.
YANBU AL BAHR, SAUDI ARABIA – This major Red Sea port is the final stop on this 7-night cruise. The old town of Yanbu, located within walking-distance from the port, dates back 2,500 years and offers one of the oldest souks, where traders would come from places as far as Africa to sell their goods. The city is known as “the diving capital of Saudi Arabia” and has become an increasingly attractive tourist destination due to its spectacular white sand shores and lively coral reefs, offering opportunities for diving, snorkeling and water activities in the Saudi Red Sea.
One of MSC Cruises’ most popular mid-size ships, MSC Magnifica is elegantly design with relaxed refinement, a high ratio of balcony staterooms, large dining areas with four restaurants and 11 bars, a pool with a sliding roof, a spectacular theater, full-scale casino, nightclub with a panoramic view and activities including a 4D cinema.
MSC Virtuosa Adds Calls to Saudi Arabia for Winter 2021 Program In The Gulf
MSC Virtuosa will also be making her debut in Saudi Arabia as her winter 2021 program in the Arabian Gulf has been enriched with calls in the port of Dammam, visiting AlAhsa oasis, another UNESCO World Heritage site. MSC Virtuosa will spend her first winter season homeporting in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. From there, the ship will sail to the nearby modern metropolis of Abu Dhabi, and then to Sir Bani Yas Island, where guests can discover an array of wildlife or bask in the sun on immaculate beaches, all exclusive to MSC Cruises guests on the days which the ship is in port. The ship also calls at Doha, the futuristic capital of Qatar, before returning to Dubai with for overnight stay.
Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo has unveiled the company’s third ship in the company’s industry-transforming “new luxury” Edge Series® — Celebrity BeyondSM. Designed to give guests endless opportunities to disconnect from the world — while simultaneously reconnecting with the world that surrounds them — Celebrity Beyond goes further than imagined possible for a cruise ship, creating a new world of wonder and luxury.
Inspired by a vision to take the cruise industry into the next era of luxury, Lutoff-Perlo assembled a dream team of modern lifestyle icons to bring to life extraordinary experiences that allow guests to connect with each other, the sea, and their journey. Celebrity Beyond showcases the design talents of multi-award-winning British designer Kelly Hoppen CBE; celebrated American designer Nate Berkus; and lauded Paris-based design firm Jouin Manku; the innovation of British architect Tom Wright; and the culinary gifts of Michelin-starred chef and restaurateur Daniel Boulud. The ship will also feature experiences and products from goop CEO and founder Gwyneth Paltrow, the brand’s new Well-Being Advisor.
Redefining luxury again, Celebrity Beyond builds on the features and design of its award-winning predecessors Celebrity Edge (2018) and Celebrity Apex(2020) by creating innovative spaces that set the brand apart from others in the industry. Every element of Celebrity Beyond’s look and feel has been carefully curated with re-imagined spaces and more luxurious versions of the brand’s most popular signature spaces, including:
The Retreat®, an exclusive resort-within-a-resort area for suite guests, highlighted by a new two-story sundeck;
Transformed accommodations from modern two-story villas with private plunge pools to staterooms with infinite verandas, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living;
An expanded Rooftop Garden and stunning Resort Deck featuring unique cantilevered float pools;
A multi-level, multi-terraced Sunset Bar redefining the ship’s aft;
A first-ever Daniel Boulud fine-dining restaurant at sea;
A boldly redesigned Grand Plaza spanning three decks, creating an airy and open indoor space;
And, the return of the Magic Carpet®, an engineering feat soaring cantilevered above the sea, offering guests uninterrupted vistas while sipping cocktails or having dinner.
“Celebrity Cruises has always been an innovator at sea, and now we have challenged the status quo with a vessel that goes beyond expectations, beyond imagination,” said Lutoff-Perlo. “Celebrity Beyond shatters any and every preconceived notion of the cruising experience. This exquisite ship offers a journey at the intersection of elegance and approachability filled with what’s important to our guests today: forward-thinking design, culinary excellence, unparalleled well-being and incomparable service.”
“With Celebrity Beyond, we saw an opportunity to take the extraordinary features of Celebrity Edge – like the focus on the connection with the ocean and the grand spaces – and really amplify them,” said Richard Fain, Chairman of Royal Caribbean Group, parent company of Celebrity Cruises. “We focused on providing more openness, height and spaciousness throughout the ship’s most popular spaces. The end result is a next generation ship that embodies the intersection of architecture and design.”
The Retreat: A Resort In and of Itself
One of the most sought-after interior designers in the world, Kelly Hoppen CBE, has reimagined aspects of the design for The Retreat, the unrivaled and exclusive resort space for suite guests, including all new suites, and brought her globally renowned style to outdoor venues such as the Rooftop Garden and the main pool area on the Resort Deck.
The new, two-story Retreat Sundeck will offer more unadulterated outdoor bliss and ways to rejuvenate in the fresh ocean air with secluded cabanas, chic new seating areas, additional water features and the exclusive Retreat Bar. The warm and inviting Retreat Lounge is a newly stylish space to unwind; while Hoppen’s new take on the adjacent private restaurant Luminae, now at the front of the ship, becomes a space where every corner provides a new experience with each visit, in keeping with the daily changing menu.
An array of contemporary suite accommodations featuring fresh color palettes and design details by Hoppen await guests of The Retreat, including the redesigned two-story Edge Villas with outdoor plunge pools, and Celebrity’s famous Iconic Suites, the largest in the fleet, offering better views than the captain’s quarters.
Connecting Two Worlds
Nowhere is more rejuvenating than the open sea, and Celebrity Beyond ensures guests are able to take full advantage of both the luxurious design of the ship while soaking in the world around them.
Perhaps best known for designing the world-famous Burj Al Arab Hotel, lead architect Tom Wright of WKK has expanded the exterior spaces on Celebrity Beyond, transforming them into serene outward-facing sanctuaries leveraging endless ocean vistas and breath-taking panoramas of the extraordinary places the ship will visit. His design both lengthens the ship by 20 meters and raises the ship to 17 decks tall, allowing for the reimagination of The Retreat, the Resort Deck, and the Rooftop Garden – outdoor spaces increasingly important to today’s traveler.
The main open deck, 40 percent larger than on previous Edge Series ships, features an enormous living Rooftop Garden designed by Hoppen and includes increased seating offering new private nooks and more spaces for movie watching, enjoying live music and outdoor dining at the expanded Rooftop Grill. A highlight of this area is Wright’s incorporation of two spectacular floating pools cantilevered six and a half feet over the side of the ship, taking guests beyond the water’s edge.
On the Resort Deck, guests will enjoy a stunning asymmetrical space with a 25-yard lap pool surrounded by a terraced pool deck and new sunken seating areas designed by Hoppen.
Wright also designed the signature Edge SeriesMagic Carpet, a tennis-court sized cantilevered platform that scales the side of the ship and transforms from open-air lounge or restaurant hovering above the ocean along higher decks to a tender platform for going ashore on lower decks. Featured on Celebrity Beyond, it debuted on Celebrity Edge in 2018 and is still considered one of the most unique design innovations ever for a cruise ship.
Celebrity Cruises’ Edge Series Design Ambassador Nate Berkus stepped into the role of designer himself, to imagine one of the most anticipated venues on Celebrity Beyond – the Sunset Bar. Inside this space that is nearly twice as large as previous iterations, Berkus has created a chic, Moroccan-inspired escape that is reminiscent of a modern-day Casablanca.
Guests will enter through a pergola-covered entrance to enjoy one of the hottest spots at sea. With more conversation niches and covered enclaves to allow guests to connect in a more intimate way, the Sunset Bar’s cascading terraces will combine to provide the perfect place to soak in spectacular views and create unforgettable memories.
Luxury in Every Detail
The core of Celebrity Beyond’s vision of luxury is the Grand Plaza, a transformational place at the center of the ship designed by Jouin Manku — the team responsible for designing the Jules Verne restaurant in the Eiffel Tower — and offering a different experience with every visit. Inspired by the piazzas of Italy that serve as life centers of towns where architecture and social connection become one, the Grand Plaza spans three decks at the heart of the ship, boldly declaring it is the place to see and be seen.
Larger than Grand Plazas on its sister Edge Series ships, the CelebrityBeyond Grand Plaza has an airier atmosphere with more room for intimate seating. The added space allowed designers to move the Martini Bar into the center of the venue as a full, circular bar.
Hanging proudly above the new Martini Bar, the Grand Plaza’s iconic chandelier boasts a new, organic shape with hundreds of individual LED lights that cast an inviting glow at all hours—taking center stage with talented bartenders at night during their exciting and theatrical Flash Flair Fusion performance.
Connected to the Grand Plaza is the top table of culinary excellence at sea, the new, intimate 50-seat restaurant by world-renowned chef Daniel Boulud. Aptly named Le Voyage, travel is the inspiration for the globally inspired flavors within, designed to transport guests to the very places that inspire the Michelin-rated chef. Complementing the menu, world-class sommeliers will pair the perfect wine with every dish from Celebrity Cruises’ “most awarded” wine collection at sea.
Complementing Chef Boulud’s world-class menu is the restaurant’s ambiance, which is also the result of Jouin Manku’s creative talents. Intimate seating cocoons are surrounded by luminous portals highlighting the themes of journey and travel, while graphically lit “glass flutes” provide layers of light and texture to create an enchanting experience.
Providing a sense of occasion and flow, the Le Voyage experience begins with a dedicated entrance and concludes with a customized sweet prepared in Daniel’s own farewell boutique as guests are wished ‘au revoir.’
Rethinking Wellness at Sea
Luxury didn’t stop at the architectural design and culinary experience, but extended into how Celebrity Cruises thought of wellness on Celebrity Beyond. New to the ship are AquaClass SkySuites, an immersive living experience that helps guests find their center. From floor-to-ceiling ocean views, private verandas, luxurious bedding and other wellness amenities, Celebrity Beyond has thought of everything to nourish its guests’ mind, body, and spirit on vacation.
Celebrity Beyond also sets sail with a new partnership with actress and entrepreneur Gwyneth Paltrow, serving as the line’s new Well-being Advisor. All Aqua Class guests across the entire Celebrity Cruises fleet (excluding Galapagos sailings) will be treated to onboard wellness offerings, including fitness kits from Paltrow’s modern lifestyle brand goop, aimed at enhancing self-care and collective well-being. Paltrow and her team at goop will also curate onboard wellness programming and participate in the line’s new Women in Wellness initiative.

Exclusive Adults-Only Experiences
Adults aboard the Disney Wish will escape, relax, dine and play in more ways than ever with exclusive venues and entertainment tailored just for them, featuring elevated interpretations of Disney stories through sophisticated theming that ranges from subtle inspiration to full-scale immersion.
For the first time on a Disney ship, guests will embark on a space-jumping tour of the Star Wars galaxy at Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge, a high-end bar styled as a luxurious yacht-class spaceship. This richly themed, immersive experience will be reserved for adults every evening, offering interactive tasting experiences and signature beverages inspired by destinations such as Batuu, Tatooine and Mustafar.
Aboard the Disney Wish, guests will savor gourmet meals and exceptional beverages at Palo Steakhouse, Enchanté by Chef Arnaud Lallement and The Rose, an upscale suite of epicurean excellence exclusively for adults, inspired by the elegant icons of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Beauty and the Beast.”
Palo Steakhouse is an evolution of the Palo restaurant that Disney cruisers know and love, now combining the relaxed sophistication of authentic Italian dining with the classic refinement of a modern steakhouse in a genteel setting inspired by Cogsworth, the tale’s majordomo-turned-enchanted-clock.
Enchanté will offer the most luxurious dining experience on board, featuring a gourmet menu crafted by three-Michelin-starred Chef Arnaud Lallement. This romantic and intimate venue will evoke the dazzling spirit of the film’s candelabra maitre d’, Lumiere.
The Rose is a chic lounge at the entrance of Palo Steakhouse and Enchanté. Inspired by the fateful flower at the heart of the story, The Rose will be an idyllic setting for a pre-dinner aperitif or after-dinner cocktail.
Senses Spa is a tranquil oasis offering indulgent spa and beauty treatments, drawing on the serenity of natural elements to promote pampering and relaxation. The spa will feature private treatment rooms, lavish spa villas, and steam and aromatherapy rooms, while the reimagined Senses Fitness will offer state-of-the-art exercise and wellness facilities.
Other adult-exclusive spaces on board the Disney Wish will include the Quiet Cove pool district; a variety of gourmet cafes, relaxed bars and upscale lounges; and more.
Family Friendly Rooms With A View
Every stateroom on board the Disney Wish will be a luxurious, peaceful retreat designed with ample room for families, plenty of storage and upscale amenities. Most will feature Disney Cruise Line’s signature split-bathroom concept for utmost comfort and function.
Most of the ship’s 1,254 staterooms will offer an ocean view — including 877 (70%) with a spacious verandah — and there will be 451 connecting doors that adjoin rooms to accommodate larger families.
The Disney Wish will elevate the concierge experience with more than double the number of premium concierge staterooms and suites, including Disney’s first-ever staterooms located above the bridge, boasting floor-to-ceiling windows that reveal breathtaking ocean views overlooking the bow of the ship. An exclusive lounge with private sun deck will be the perfect place for concierge guests to relax, sip a cocktail and enjoy a premium level of dedicated service throughout the voyage.
The Disney Wish will also debut four royal suites – richly adorned, lavishly appointed suites that accommodate up to six guests and feature extravagant details and first-class amenities. These include a pair of two-story suites, the first of their kind within the Disney fleet, which will feature stunning statement pieces like an elegant spiral staircase and a spectacular two-deck-high stained-glass frieze.
An Expanding Fleet

Royal Caribbean is one of the largest and most luxurious cruise lines in the world with 24 massive ships. Right now, their Quantum of the Seas is their only ship that has received the coveted permit to be sailing in such turbulent times.
Check out our video review for all the sights and sounds we found on our journey:
Since November 2020, the Quantum of the Seas has been based in Singapore and for locals, we bring you great news–their contract has just recently been extended till October 2021.
Sidebar: this is not a sponsored post. We’re recommending this cruise because we had a whale of a time and thought it was worth every penny we paid.
This was no ordinary cruise. There were no ports of call, and we were bound to strict COVID-safety protocols from the moment we booked our cruise.
We were required to undergo a PCR COVID-19 test a couple of days before boarding — the test was included in the price of the cruise. For anyone who hasn’t had one of these, it’s an eye (and nostril)-opening experience. It’s uncomfortable but not unbearable. Looking back on all the fond memories we had on our cruise, I can confirm that the swab test was a worthwhile discomfort to endure. It really isn’t so bad. The process was quick and our results were available within a few hours.
Booking our test was the most painful part of the entire trip. Not only did I not receive any information about booking the test, the website for booking was also buggy. All these were probably not Royal Caribbean’s fault since the test was conducted by a third-party company. In any case, with a little extra effort, all was remedied and we managed to get a test slot we could make.
For departure day, we signed up as far in advance as possible for the earliest possible boarding time slots, which became very very important for our enjoyment of the trip, as I’ll later explain.
Insider Tip: Book the earliest possible barding time slot.
These assigned slots were a COVID-safety measure to prevent unsafe crowding and to reduce wait times due to the extra boarding procedures.
In addition to the usual ID checks and immigration/customs clearance that you’d expect on any cruise, because of COVID-19, we had to complete a brief wellness checkup (in the form of an interview), a health declaration questionnaire, and contact tracing check-ins. Before boarding the ship, we were each issued a tracelet (contact-tracing bracelet) that we had to wear at all times except when in water or in our (state)rooms.
The tracelet was but 1 of 3 ways contact tracing was consistently conducted. Besides wearing a tracelet, we had to tap our key cards when entering and exiting a venue in the ship. All these were on top of keeping the Singaporean government’s Trace Together app or token connected at all times.
After about 30 minutes, we were through and in paradise (aka the Quantum of the Seas)! We were among the first to board and rushed to Guest Services to reserve seats on the headliner shows. Lim at Guest Services very kindly helped me with my reservation and even booked bumper cars, which I didn’t know I needed to book fast as well. If you’re thinking of taking one of these cruises, we HIGHLY recommend you board early and book your entertainment first thing.
Insider Tip: Book headliner shows and bumper cars as soon as you can get connected to the ship’s wifi.
Thanks to Lim’s helpfulness, we were one of the few lucky ducks that got to watch all the shows that required a reservation and when we could, we would go as early as possible to “chope” (save) the best available seats at the show. Because of the need to space out for safe-distancing, great seats are few and – literally – far between. There was one show that we arrived only 5 minutes before the show time and ended up watching some of the performance from the back and also had some part of our view obscured by gigantic lamps. Given that the doors open 30 minutes before each show, when we arrived 15 minutes before our 1st show, I was surprised when we got seats in the 3rd row (albeit on the side). We were close enough to the Gold Art Duo from Ukraine’s Got Talent, we could see their entertaining facial expressions. Yes, all stage performers from singers to dancers (in small groups) had their masks off.
The only times performers had to wear masks is if the dance ensemble consisted of a large number of dancers. When that was the case, the masks were aesthetic and alluring, arguably adding to the show. In Royal Caribbean’s original show, “Starwater”, there were certain moments where dancers/models would press up against the glass panels that separate them from the audience, getting closer than what you’ll expect in our COVID circumstance.
All in all, I’m truly impressed by how Royal Caribbean has turned COVID restrictions into platforms for creativity, producing unique works of art that are an exclusive treat for the audience on the cruise. We had a FANTASTIC time at these shows and were pleasantly surprised by the variety of entertainment on offer; we enjoyed everything from acrobatics to comedy to musical performances! Each and every performance was amazing, with Gold Art Duo and the BeatleManiacs being our personal favorites.
Watching all the headliner shows, one per evening, was the highlight of each of our evenings; I wish more had the opportunity to do so. Given the limited seats available at each performance venue, it was the minority of passengers who got to enjoy the headliner shows. Why is that so, given that the on-board theatres typically accommodate the majority of passengers? Even though the ship is only at 50% capacity, the activities and entertainment are also at reduced capacity for safe distancing. The main venues where the shows and concerts took place, for example, were only at about 25% capacity with plenty of space between each section of open seats so guests could not mingle with other guests from other rooms.
The trickiest part about booking the very limited slots for entertainment is that most reservations cannot be booked prior to boarding. Except for the North Star (which we booked) and Ripcord by iFly, no other activities could be pre-booked. Only once on board and connected to the ship’s wi-fi could we make almost all reservations through Royal Caribbean’s very handy app that helps us customize our daily itineraries.
After noticing guests playing pickleball at the Sports Deck, I learned that there were also additional activities that can only be reserved in-person at the Sports Deck–foosball, pickleball, ping pong, and Xbox. These activities weren’t listed anywhere else, not on the app or the Cruise Compass which supposedly had all the available activities. By the time I tried to book these on Day 2, there were only a handful of available slots remaining.
Insider Tip: Book activities at the Sports Deck ASAP!
Each stateroom was limited to a maximum of 4 bookings at the Sports Deck (excluding Bumper Cars). Late arrivals lose their booking to any guests willing to wait around.
At the Sports Deck, we unleashed our inner child. The bumper cars had us laughing uncontrollably and also allowed us to forget for a few minutes the craziness of the outside world we left on shore. When we weren’t playing bumper cars here, we were taking part in the adult archery competition (which we won a silver medal in!) and having a blast at various dance classes.
Sports competitions, dance classes and other small-scale activities were on a first-come-first-served basis (no reservations were available) and once the maximum capacity was reached, no more could participate. Given the wide variety of concurrent activities available, I didn’t see anyone being turned away. From craft to live entertainment, sports and trivia, there was something for everyone.
Our favorite activity was the Scavenger Hunt, in which we had to find crew members from the various nationalities on the ship and get passwords from the Cruise Director Staff. We loved that this gave us an excuse for more interaction with the friendly crew. We were so into the game, we ended up winning! We were surprised by the generous gifts we won and were eager to share our joy. After winning the full collection of Royal Caribbean merchandise, we were more than happy to play more games in the periphery where we could not win prizes but could eat and drink.
Eating and drinking was not allowed in venues where activities were being held. Eating and drinking just outside where activities were held allowed us to have fun while giving us and our respiratory issues a much-needed break from our masks. It was nice to be able to enjoy brief moments of respite and a sense of normalcy in such abnormal times.
At every step of the way, the crew were extremely diligent and prioritized health and safety alongside fun: groups were kept distanced, high-touch surfaces were cleaned after every use, and masks were required in all public areas except when exercising, using the hot tubs, eating, and drinking. In the dining areas, tables were spaced apart and kept to groups of 8 or fewer, with about half marked off and not to be used. Temperatures were checked at each venue and we were frequently asked to sanitize our hands using the myriad of stations before entering.
Violations of COVID regulations would result not only in on-board penalties, but violators would be referred to the Singapore Government, which had inspectors onboard and routinely patrolling to ensure rules were adhered to. The local authorities have done a fantastic job managing the virus–Singapore had no local COVID cases during the time we took our cruise.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable vacation for everyone, the crew was constantly cleaning and crowd-managing, and always with a smile…. Well, we couldn’t actually see their smile behind the mask, but each person wore a button so we could imagine the smiles behind their masks.
The ship and her crew were AMAZING and we are so grateful to them for everything they did to make our vacation extra special. Most of the crew has been on the ship, away from their families for over 6 months with the pandemic still raging in many countries. We are so incredibly grateful to them for making our trip memorable and really going above and beyond. We’d like to give a shout out to Sezai, Yitzhak, Raz, Eka, and all other Crew members for the unforgettably wonderful vacation we had.
This was the first vacation we have taken in 18 months, and our first time on a cruise ship since 2018, when we sailed with Royal Caribbean to beautiful Norway (aboard the Independence of the Seas). As you’d expect, this experience was completely different given the COVID-era protocols. Thanks to the hard work and creativity of the crew, it still very much felt like a vacation, and it was a GREAT vacation, even if a very different one.
This was also our first time onboard a Quantum class ship, and it was absolutely massive, with multiple pools, shops and restaurants. On board a Royal Caribbean ship, it’s impossible to be hungry or bored. There’s free flow of free food and if you don’t wish to pay for internet, you can enjoy a digital detox just as we did and not suffer a moment of boredom. If you haven’t been onboard one of these Quantum-class ships, it’s basically a floating city. There’s even a running track along the outside of the top deck that’s a third of a mile long. If you get the chance to cruise on the Quantum of the Seas, don’t miss the Robot Bar that serves non-alcoholic drinks too. The whole cruise is very family friendly with great activities for children and teens who can be left in the care of the crew members while adults play like kids.

We believe the cruise industry has been halted long enough. Cruise lines should be allowed to return with industry proven safety protocols and/or with vaccinated crew and guests.
