Emerald Waterways—the deluxe river cruise company is pleased to announce its first foray into ocean cruising with a brand new yacht sailing itinerary along Croatia’s dramatic Dalmatian Coast in the Adriatic Sea. Set to launch in 2019, the eight-day Islands of Dalmatia cruise plies the yacht-friendly waters between Trogir and Dubrovnik, Croatia. Guests on these sailings will take in some of the most spectacular destinations along the Adriatic Coast and learn about the unique topography of this region, comprised of thousands of off-shore islands and coastlines dotted with limestone mountains and ancients cities and towns. Emerald Waterways will be offering 22 departures from April through October, 2019, and are currently accepting pre-bookings with a refundable $250 deposit on their website.

Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast has become a popular vacation spot, known for its pristine landscapes, remarkably clear azure waters, fascinating history dating back to the 7th century and laid-back Mediterranean culture. Exploring this region onboard an intimate yacht allows guests the best of both worlds—the long view of pebbled coves framed by distant mountain ranges as glimpsed from the ship’s sun deck, as well as the up-close-and-personal experience of walking the cobblestone streets chatting with locals and sampling the delicacies of the area’s traditional cuisine.

The sailing begins or ends in Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage Site boasting a historic town center and medieval streets lined with classic examples of Renaissance and Baroque architecture. From there, guests sail to towards Šibenik, one of the oldest towns on the Adriatic Coast, before heading to the small town of Skradin. Here, guests explore Krka National Park, well known for its magnificent waterfalls, including the Skradinski Buk falls, one of Croatia’s most famous sights. A day spent on Hvar reveals the island’s rolling lavender fields and cultivated vineyards as well as hillsides dotted with terracotta-roofed villas, Gothic palaces and 13th-century ramparts rising towards an impressive citadel. Guests will visit the bell towers of the Franciscan Monastery, St Mark’s Church and Cathedral of St Stephen before returning to the ship for an afternoon of sailing towards Split, the largest city on the Adriatic coast featuring an impressive mix of Roman and modern architecture.

Pučišća, a coastal town and a municipality on the island of Brač, is often cited as being one of the prettiest villages in Europe. Later that day, a DiscoverMORE excursion features a guided tour of Cetina with a boat ride and local culinary tasting. On the island of Korčula, one of the greenest islands in the Adriatic Sea, a guided tour of the town reveals the typical medieval architecture, including ancient towers and red-roofed houses. Marco Polo, the famous world-traveler and writer, is reputed to have been here. The village of Ston is considered a jewel of the Adriatic Coast, and a guided tour here includes a wine-tasting session. The sailing ends in stunning Dubrovnik with its picturesque Old Town, and white limestone streets.

With just 18 well-appointed cabins holding 36 guests, this intimate ship provides the quintessential yachting experience. The sun deck, outfitted with comfortable sun beds and deck chairs, offers an ideal spot for relaxing and soaking up the Mediterranean sun while taking in Croatia’s breathtaking coastline. Specially outfitted pool ladders located at the rear offer guests easy-access to the sea for a swim or snorkel while the yacht is stationary. The open-plan restaurant allows guests flexibility with their dining choices, while the bar and lounge terrace provide a spot to get to know fellow guests. The knowledgeable, English-speaking crew is available to help guests navigate each port, ensuring they get the most out the fascinating small towns and cities.

Norwegian Cruise Line Announces New Terminal At PortMiami

PortMiami Terminal
PortMiami Terminal

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd., which operates the Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises brands, recently unveiled the design of the new and dedicated Norwegian Cruise Line terminal at PortMiami.  The terminal at PortMiami represents the continued relationship and strong ties between Norwegian and Miami, which has been the company’s home since its launch in 1966.  Pending the final approval by the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners, the project will commence in May 2018, and is scheduled for completion by the fall of 2019, as Norwegian Encore, the newest ship of the Breakaway Plus class, makes her debut in Miami with seasonal cruises to the Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line Announces New Terminal At PortMiami
The project will commence in May 2018, and is scheduled for completion by the fall of 2019, as Norwegian Encore, the newest ship of the Breakaway Plus class, makes her debut in Miami with seasonal cruises to the Caribbean.

“Norwegian has been sailing from Miami for over fifty years, longer than any other cruise line, and we are honored to be partnering with PortMiami and Miami-Dade County to construct an iconic terminal that will contribute to Miami’s world famous skyline and strengthen its position as the Cruise Capital of the World,” said Frank Del Rio, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.  “This terminal marks the latest step in our continual efforts to strengthen our presence in strategic home ports around the world.  We look forward to welcoming Norwegian Encore and the thousands of guests sailing on Norwegian Cruise Line and her sister brands to this state-of-the-art terminal.”

Norwegian is widely recognized for introducing modern-day cruising more than 50 years ago, by transforming a common means of transportation to a new style of vacation with its first Caribbean voyages out of the port of Miami and launching the city’s status as the “cruising capital of the world.” As a result of the continued relationship, Miami-Dade County will invest $100 million to build a new terminal dedicated to Norwegian Cruise Line, with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. augmenting the county’s allocated funds with its own contribution to PortMiami, as was unveiled recently at a press conference held at the 2018 Seatrade Cruise Global exhibition.

“Investing in PortMiami’s infrastructure positions Miami as a global destination for visitors,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.  “The construction of a new cruise terminal with the capacity to berth an additional 5,000-passenger cruise ship represents thousands of jobs and increased opportunities for our community. We are grateful for Norwegian Cruise Line’s continued partnership.”

“PortMiami is proud to be recognized as the Cruise Capital of the World, welcoming more passengers than any other port in the world,” said Chairwoman of the Miami-Dade County Economic Development and Tourism Committee Rebeca Sosa.  “Norwegian Cruise Line’s partnership is a big win for the growth and expansion of tourism in Miami-Dade County.  We are honored by our partner’s commitment to PortMiami and Miami-Dade County.”

Globally recognized for their award-winning designs and projects around the world, the Miami-based firm of Bermello Ajamil & Partners Inc., was selected to design the new terminal.  The project will be constructed to LEED Silver standards, focusing on innovation in design and terminal operation to create a platform that will optimize energy performance, indoor air quality, water efficiencies and maximize the use of local materials and resources.  After the press conference, attendees were able to get a close-up look of the new terminal through an interactive 3D virtual reality experience and model on display.

“The new Norwegian terminal will set the standard for passenger comfort and experience and will become an iconic building on Miami’s waterfront, a true representation of the role that Norwegian and PortMiami played as the pioneers of modern cruising,” says Luis Ajamil, president and chief executive officer of Bermello Ajamil & Partners, Inc.

Cruise CompeteThe modern terminal draws its inspiration from a nautilus, with its spiraled and multi-level façade, opening up to grand ocean views.  Once complete it will be the new “pearl” of Miami, redefining the landscape of the city’s skyline.  Innovative lighting, inviting indoor and outdoor waiting areas and other guest-centric elements will enhance the overall passenger experience.  At nearly 166,500 square feet, the debuting Norwegian terminal will accommodate ships of up to 5,000 passengers, and feature new technology to support faster and more efficient embarkation and disembarkation processes, as well as expedited security screening and luggage check-in.  A dedicated lounge and service area will facilitate a warm and welcoming sense of arrival for large groups and charters, and a new parking garage, and valet parking area with direct access to the terminal and lounge are also scheduled to be completed.

Norwegian Cruise Line maintains an ongoing commitment to Miami, offering new and enhanced itineraries and ships for guests to discover year round with the freedom and flexibility they can only experience with Norwegian at sea.  For additional information or to book a cruise aboard one of Norwegian’s newest ships, contact a travel professional, call Norwegian at 888-NCL-CRUISE (625-2784), or visit www.ncl.com.

Viking Sun, Vikings Fourth Ocean Ship Officially Named In Shanghai

930-Guest Viking Sun is the First Cruise Ship Ever Named on The Bund

Viking® has announced that its fourth ocean ship, Viking Sun®, was officially named during a spectacular celebration on The Bund, in the heart of Shanghai. The ship is currently sailing Viking’s sold-out 141-day World Cruise from Miami to London, and its stop in Shanghai marks the first time one of Viking’s ocean ships has called in China. Viking Sun is also the first-ever cruise ship to be named on The Bund in Shanghai. Classified as a “small ship” by Cruise Critic, the 930-guest, 47,800-ton Viking Sun arrived in Shanghai this morning, navigating into the mouth of the Yangtze River and then up the Huangpu River into central Shanghai, where she received a warm welcome from local residents and boats in the harbor.

“I am very pleased to officially name our newest ship in Shanghai. We care deeply about tourism in China, and we have been bringing river cruise guests here since 2004,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. “China is the home of Viking Sun’s Godmother, Mrs. Yi Lou, and in the coming year, Shanghai will also welcome our fifth ship, Viking Orion. We look forward to introducing thousands of new travelers to the cultural treasures in Shanghai and throughout China.”

After arriving today, Viking Sun was positioned at the Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal, adjacent to a concert stage constructed specifically for the celebration. Viking’s World Cruise guests and international dignitaries were treated to high-tech show and musical concert on the waterfront that paid tribute to the special friendship between Norway and China. On a giant wave-like screen built alongside the ship, a projected animation depicted the story of silk – the ancient trade that has formed a cultural bond between Norway and China. Shanghai television personality Michelle Wang served as master of ceremony and introduced musical performances from the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra and acclaimed Chinese operatic tenor Dai Yuqiang, as well as Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø, who is widely considered one of the world’s top crossover sopranos.

On March 9, Viking Sun will set sail from Shanghai for Southeast Asia and India, before making her way through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean – essentially following the route of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road or “One Belt One Road” Initiative. When the ship arrives in London on May 5, she will have visited five continents, 35 countries and 64 ports during her first World Cruise. Viking Sun will continue to sail the globe during the 2019 World Cruise, a 128-day itinerary from Miami to London.

Operating river cruises on the Yangtze since 2004, Viking has been one of the largest sources of inbound travelers from North America. In 2016, Viking began offering a new river cruise product designed specifically for Chinese travelers who wish to travel to Europe. Sailing on Viking’s award-winning Longships, Chinese travelers experience a Mandarin-exclusive environment – with all signage in Mandarin and all staff and tour guides fluent in Mandarin. These dedicated 190-guest Viking Longships are the first Mandarin exclusive hotel environments for Chinese travelers in Europe. And expanded for 2018, Viking will offer 100 sailings on the Rhine and Danube rivers, dedicated specifically for Chinese guests.

The Viking Difference

Cruise CompeteDesigned for discerning travelers with interests in history, art, music and cuisine, Chairman Torstein Hagen often says Viking offers guests “the thinking person’s cruise” as an alternative to mainstream cruises. Ships are small to get guests closer to their destination, with more time in port and more overnights. On board, guests find serene Scandinavian spaces, where every room is both beautiful and functional, quiet and filled with light. With the most al fresco dining opportunities at sea, featuring regional cuisines and always-available American classics, Viking’s guests can truly dine in their destination. A focus on cultural enrichment brings immersive experiences ashore and on board. And only The Viking Way of Exploration provides guests with itineraries that feature Local Life, Working World and Privileged Access experiences.

In addition, Viking offers the best value at sea, with each cruise fare including much more than what competitors offer—an included value of more than $200 per person per day for an average cruise. Every cruise fare includes an exterior stateroom, a complimentary shore excursion in each port of call, all onboard meals, and all port charges and government taxes. Guests also enjoy many complimentary amenities as part of their fare, including: beer and wine with lunch and dinner service; alternative restaurant dining; Wi-Fi; self-service laundry; access to the Thermal Suite in the LivNordic Spa; and 24-hour room service.

From now through March 31, 2018, Viking is offering U.S. residents 2-for-1 cruise fares on select 2018 ocean and river cruise itineraries, with additional savings on international air. Call Viking toll free at 1-855-8-VIKING (1-855-884-5464) or contact a travel agent.

A Traditional Boat Re-imagined as a Luxury Cruise

Alaturka Cruise

A Traditional Boat Re-imagined as a Luxury Cruise | 22Large cruise ships in Turkey as well as anywhere else in the world make routine stops at fabulous destinations. However, these stops are often far too short and leave any adventurous traveler wanting more. If you do decide to revisit Turkey, might we suggest that rather than booking hotels along the Turquoise Coast, for example, book a traditional 3-day, 4-night gulet cruise with Alaturka Cruise that takes you to the best sites to see, all while providing accommodation and delicious food. These boats are made to fit a traditional design but have been melded with modern comforts of a small cruise ship that feels homely and relaxing, all while including a bit of adventure along the way.

The cabins are compact compared to hotel rooms of the same quality, but offer comfortable sleeping area with some storage space for luggage. As you move up to the more expensive end of the scale, luxury gulets offer larger rooms with seating within the room itself. Most rooms are decorated in a traditional polished wood with a little Turkish colour added in to make it feel like a home.

One of the main attraction to these types of cruises is that they can be the holiday itself but also can be part of a holiday. Some choose to do these trips at the start or the end of their holidays to travel between areas to experience as much as they can but without tying themselves down to a single holiday type or location. Seeing a port town such as Fethiye and its surrounding attractions like the famous Oludeniz beach and then being able to sail to Olympos and stay in a tree house just outside the ruins is a great combination for a fantastic holiday.

The cruises themselves take pride in showing only the most interesting or beautiful locations as you sail along the Turquoise coast. Butterfly valley has been a famous spot to visit for many years now due to its seclusion and ideal location only reachable by boat.

As these cruises journey to many of small islands that have untouched natural beauty, it is possible to take a swim in some of the bays. These areas have become popular with divers and snorkelers as there are many types of small shoaling fish as well as endangered Loggerhead Turtles. Some areas have an unusual blend of natural and historic beauty. St. Nicolas island which is becoming more popular with each passing year, is the alleged resting place of St. Nicholas, or Santa Clause as he is more commonly known. This island has ruins from the buildings put in place by St. Nicholas that were once used as refuge for travelers.

A Traditional Boat Re-imagined as a Luxury Cruise | 22Sailing along the Turquoise coast is an amazing experience and your crew on board are sure to make you feel at home. Your days will start with a traditional Turkish breakfast, a collection of fresh seasonal fruits and some light vegetables along with some cheese and preserves, served with fresh bread. Lunch is usually a light barbeque with salad. The evening meal is normally grilled fresh fish as well as some meat cooked over the coals, with a selection of homemade mezes. These kinds of meals are traditional but also full of flavour all the while leaving you very satisfied.

These cruise boats are not the ocean liners others might wish for but are often much more enjoyable as they allow for a more personal experience as well as more freedom to the journey, all while going places that the large cruise liners do not reach.

5 Tips For Your Baltic Cruise

Northern Europe’s Baltic region includes a number of unique countries and ports of call, each with their own special charm. There are so many extraordinary places to explore in this area and a cruise is the easiest way to do it. Baltic ports feature world-famous museums, stunning palaces and cathedrals, memorable cultural performances, and so much more. Getting the most out of your vacation requires some advance research and careful planning.

Here are five tips to help you plan a great Baltic cruise vacation:

  1. Choose The Right Itinerary. Photo By: Nancy SchretterBaltic cruise itineraries can vary significantly in length and the amount of time spent in each port of call. Choose an itinerary that spends two full days in St. Petersburg. There’s too much there to cram into one day and staying in port overnight is a unique experience, allowing for a trip to the ballet or the Faberge Museum. Cruising through the Swedish Archipelago is another Baltic cruise highlight, so look for itineraries incorporating this scenic transit. In addition, make sure to research and carefully consider your embarkation point. Copenhagen is an excellent embarkation port for a Baltic cruise, since it is easily reached and served by low cost airlines. In addition, Copenhagen has a wealth of historical spots and attractions to explore. Germany’s port of Warnemunde is another good departure point for Baltic cruises. The city is easily accessible from Berlin by train, so vacationers often choose to fly to Berlin a few days early to fully experience all it has to offer.
  1. Pick The Perfect Ship.Photo By: Nancy Schretter While ports of call are a key part of any Baltic cruise, so is your cruise ship. Selecting the right cruise environment will make a world of difference in your vacation enjoyment. Carefully consider your needs, interests and preferred traveling style as well as those of your family members. Then choose a cruise line and ship to match. A great cruise travel agent can help. Dining and entertainment can be an important part of the Baltic cruise experience, as are kids and teens programs for families. Norwegian Cruise Line excels in these areas, offering a wide variety of dining venues, lively bars and lounges, and Broadway-style shows and entertainment. There’s something for every age group and interest onboard Norwegian Cruise Line ships. The relaxed vibe onboard makes Norwegian’s ships a good choice for Baltic itineraries as well.
  1. Expect A Fast-Paced Trip. 5 Tips For Your Baltic Cruise | 22Baltic cruises are generally highly port intensive, involving long days and lots of walking. This can make for a demanding trip. You might want to get plenty of sleep during the week before your cruise in order to get the most out of the experience. Some travelers may need to build in some down time or a few slower-paced evenings on their cruise though, so be realistic about what you can handle. Several Baltic ports may be over an hour or more from the cities or attractions you’ll be visiting, making for lengthy days. Choosing the right cruise line can make the long days easier, though. For example, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Freestyle Dining approach allows guests to easily enjoy meals at any time that’s convenient for them. There are no set dining times or seating locations and the ships’ wide variety of restaurant venues lets guests choose what they’d like to eat and how dressed up they want to be. Eliminating regimented schedules and structure is fantastic on a Baltic cruise. It’s so much easier to just relax and go with the flow after enjoying a full day of memorable experiences.
  1. Research And Book Tours In Advance. 5 Tips For Your Baltic Cruise | 22Popular ship-sponsored tours often sell out well before departure. Research each of your Baltic ports of call before your cruise and review the shore excursions being offered by your cruise line. If there are several that will make or break your cruise experience, book them immediately. This is particularly important for tours in St. Petersburg and other popular ports of call. Check out message boards to get “been there-done that” reviews and uncover private tour operators like Alla Tours that offer appealing small group excursions as well. Research the dining and entertainment options available on your ship and make reservations before boarding your ship whenever possible. Popular shows and dining times at specialty restaurants can book up quickly.
  1. Pack Wisely.5 Tips For Your Baltic Cruise | 22 Check the weather forecast for each of your ports of call before departing, but understand that things can change.Weather in the Baltic region is often variable, so bring along clothes you can easily layer. In addition, pack rain gear and folding umbrellas in case of showers. Baltic cruise shore excursions generally involve a lot of walking, so bring comfortable shoes that can handle cobblestones and long flights of steps. If you’re planning to buy new shoes for your trip, do so several months in advance and break them in for a relaxed fit. European countries have different voltage requirements and varying types of plugs for power outlets. If you’re staying on land pre/post cruise, make sure to bring along the right type of power adaptor plugs. If you’ll be doing a lot of touring, you might want to bring along a portable phone charger as well.

Cruise Compete

Be prepared for multiple currency changes on Baltic cruises, since many countries have their own currencies. Credit cards are generally accepted in most places, however. If possible, bring along credit cards that do not charge foreign transaction fees. American Express is not as widely accepted as Visa and MasterCard, so plan accordingly.
