Alaska Cruise Comparison: Luxury, Expedition, Big Ship

Un-Cruise Adventures

I’ve always said that the best way to experience Alaska is on a cruise. “The Last Frontier” is surrounded by amazing waterways that define the way of life for its residents. These waters have always been vital as the region carved out its identity from pioneering and mining beginnings to its modern place as a hub of commercial fishing and tourism.

Alaska Cruise Comparison: Our Guide

So, let’s get this out of the way right up front: Any cruise to Alaska is going to be a special experience. So, there is no right way to cruise in Alaska – you’ll just have to choose which type of voyage is right for you.

I have been to Alaska three times, each on a different style of cruise ship.

I’ve explored little-visited spots through the intimacy and ruggedness of an expedition cruise with UnCruise Adventures.

I also sailed to Alaska’s historic frontier towns and cities with a couple thousand others on the larger Golden Princess cruise ship, which carries more than 2,500 passengers.

And, I was supremely spoiled when I was among the 700 passengers cruising in comfort on the luxury ship Regent Seven Seas Mariner.

Alaska Cruise Styles – Three Different Types Compared

So, what cruise style would you prefer?

I’ll tell you this: I enjoyed them all, because they each feature distinctive aspects of exploration and adventure that you’ll only find on that particular type of voyage.

Here is what you can expect . . .

Alaska On a Big Cruise Ship

Take a mass-market cruise ship to Alaska if you appreciate the wide variety of onboard activities that accompany an interesting enrichment program. While sailing in Southeast Alaska, the large ships such as Golden Princess offer a lot of outdoor deck space ideal for passengers to gather to observe wildlife during times of scenic cruising in fjords, channels and passages.

Princess Cruises

The ships also feature a naturalist who gives talks (heard over the loudspeaker) while you sail in special places like Glacier Bay National Park or Tracy Arm Fjord. If the weather is chilly, you have the option to watch from inside. The large public spaces on the big ships allow you to view through windows and often within a few steps of getting a nice cocktail or some food to savor as you gaze out the windows while sailing past bobbing icebergs or in the midst of glaciers.

Excursion programs

Excursion programs are varied and include things like helicopter rides, dogsledding and fishing experiences or bear-watching outings. You’ll visit mining towns and historic cities like Skagway, Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau.

However, these ports can get fairly crowded when the entire ship (or multiple ships) empties onto the streets of these tiny villages.

The benefit of the large-ship experience in Alaska is that you can enjoy your time cruising or in interesting ports while still having access to amenities like a gym, great restaurants, spa services and nightly included entertainment.

Alaska On a Luxury Cruise

Regent Seven Seas Mariner Observation Lounge
The Observation Lounge on Regent Seven Seas Mariner lets you view the incredible scenery in Alaska in comfort.

You get to head out into the wilds of Alaska in style. My cruise on Regent Seven Seas Mariner was delightful because the ship carries just several hundred passengers — so you get to enjoy this great destination with a certain intimacy and level of comfort not available on other ships.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Mariner also features a large Observation Lounge where travelers gather to hear enrichment talks on the region, enjoy cocktails and live music while sailing in some of the prettiest places on earth in Southeast Alaska. Drinks, excursions, gratuities and even airfare and transfers are included in your fare.

On these types of cruises in Alaska, you’re going to get more gourmet food options and better service, as well as more space onboard and in your cabin. Every stateroom on our ship had a balcony, too, which is a must when cruising in Alaska. I opened the door to my veranda one morning just in time to see a humpback emerge, blow water from its spout, then slide back below the surface.

Luxury Cruise Benefits

You also will have entertainment, pools, hot tubs, fitness centers and spa services.

The best benefit of a luxury cruise in Alaska is the highly curated shore excursions that feature smaller group sizes, plus the great food and service. It’s a high-end, hassle-free trip because you get nearly everything included in your fare upfront.

Alaska On an Expedition

UnCruise Adventures Wilderness Explorer in Alaska
UnCruise Adventures’ Wilderness Explorer features a deck at the bow to get outside to spot whales — and rainbows — in Alaska.

Any type of cruise in Alaska offers a feast for your eyes.

It’s a truly stunning place, filled with beautiful things to see.

An expedition cruise in Alaska, however, feeds your soul.

UnCruise Adventures

I sailed with UnCruise Adventures on its Wilderness Explorer ship on an itinerary that — true to the line’s name – was full of adventure. The ship carries a maximum of 84 passengers, and there were about half that many during my voyage in early spring.

Expedition ships are not fancy. The trips are more about what you can see and do off the ship. These cruises are ideal for travelers who want to get out into nature for active (even challenging) days.

Cruise Compete

They also appeal to nature-lovers, photography buffs and people who love to learn more about their destinations by interacting with expert guides and naturalists who provide daily enrichment talks and activities.

Expedition Cruise Benefits

I really enjoyed my time on UnCruise Adventures because a strong bond was quickly formed among our group of a few dozen like-minded travelers who didn’t mind the somewhat austere nature of the ship and stateroom accommodations. Instead, we formed camaraderie over tasty locally sourced meals, as well as daily excursions like hiking, snorkeling, kayaking and skiff tours.

On an expedition, you will sail to smaller islands and bays where you might be the only people. We went on 10-plus-mile hikes on rugged trails to see rivers, waterfalls, bogs, valleys and natural hot springs. Imagine sitting in a natural hot springs bath while looking up at snow-capped peaks.

Smaller Ship Advantages

The smaller ships get you closer to glaciers. The captain can also adjust the daily sailing schedule to move the ship to areas where creatures are spotted. Our Wilderness Explorer ship often would linger amid a pod of breeching whales, and we also had orcas and Dall’s porpoises follow along just feet from the sides and bow of the ship. It was a jaw-dropping experience to be that close to these animals. (Bald eagles were a daily sighting.)

We also kayaked about five miles against the winds and current into Misty Fjords National Monument. It was among the most grueling – yet satisfying – excursions I’ve ever enjoyed.

So, while the ship has limited amenities – a hot tub, bar, lounge and tiny cabins – this type of cruise is memorable for so many other reasons.

So, what kind of Alaska cruise is right for you? Hey, you might want to try them all just so you’ll know for sure.

New Culinary Adventures Await Onboard the Disney Treasure

Paw Shortbread Sandwich
Paw Shortbread Sandwich

Heartwarming Disney adventures will flavor several new dining experiences onboard the Disney Treasure when it sets sail in Dec. 2024. From an adult lounge themed to “The Aristocats” and a heartwarming “Guardians of the Galaxy” dinner offering, to a “Coco”-inspired menu and premium sweet treats straight out of “Zootopia,” guests will embark on a delicious journey that combines Disney Cruise Line’s signature service and world-class cuisine with tastes from beloved Disney stories.

A “Cat-Tastic” Piano Lounge

Infused with the eclectic elegance of an old-school jazz club, the Scat Cat Lounge will interpret the groovy penthouse performance of “Ev’erybody Wants to be a Cat” from the Walt Disney Animation Studios film “The Aristocats” in an artistic salute to the film. An assortment of hanging lanterns and a paw print-adorned baby grand piano will evoke the bohemian sophistication of the film’s iconic character Scat Cat and his larger-than-life persona.

A direct extension of the Grand Hall, Scat Cat Lounge will also take design cues from the Grand Hall’s Agrabah-inspired architecture with a complementary color palette and curated décor. Symbols of cats, both hidden and overt, throughout the space will help bring the animated adventures of Duchess and her mischievous kittens into the real world for the first time. At Scat Cat Lounge, guests will encounter swinging live music and a delicious craft cocktail menu.

  • Served to sip from a French-style ceramic bowl, the Créme de la Créme Martini will fuse cognac and chocolate into a rich, creamy dessert cocktail that will be reminiscent of “The Aristocats” kittens, Marie, Toulouse and Berlioz’s favorite evening treat.
  • The Cat Drink will combine clarified bourbon, amaro, Aperol and fresh lemon into a near translucent cocktail that shows off hand-crafted drinkware that will be embossed with the image of a cat.
  • Ideal for two or more guests, The Turkish Tea Experience will honor the Agrabah-inspired architecture of the Grand Hall. The tea-based cocktail will be presented in a bejeweled tea pot and gold-detailed teacups.

An Out-of-This-World Cinematic Dining Celebration

Worlds of Marvel, Disney Cruise Line’s Marvel-themed dining experience, will host Disney Treasure guests for two distinct nights, including a brand-new offering that will showcase the lively duo Rocket and Groot from the blockbuster “Guardians of the Galaxy” films. “Marvel Celebration of Heroes: Groot Remix” will begin as diners partake in a celebration honoring the many Super Heroes who keep the world safe. The story will unfold onscreen when Groot takes over the proceedings and brings the party to the next level like only he can. Throughout the evening, guests will eat to the beat of an “awesome mix” of hit songs from decades past and have the chance to test their knowledge of the Marvel universe with activities for the whole family. Guests on the Disney Treasure will also experience “Avengers: Quantum Encounter,” a fan-favorite cinematic dining adventure that follows Ant-Man and The Wasp as they work to protect new Quantum Core technology from a fearsome foe.

A Flavorful Trip to Santa Cecilia

At Plaza de Coco,an array of artful dishes will transport guests to the picturesque town depicted in the Pixar Animation Studios film, “Coco.” Traditional recipes from the Rivera family’s kitchen will guide a modern menu that will capture the festive flavors of Miguel’s colorful world in a fresh new way. Everyone in the familia will gather around the table for two unique, celebratory evenings full of food and theatrical entertainment during their Disney Treasure voyage.

The musical meal will begin with appetizer options to the tune of Abuelita Elena Shrimp Diabla with chili-chipotle sauce, cilantro, pickled red onion and toasted birotes, and Chorizo Street Croquettes with chili-lime crema, cotija cheese and cilantro.

Tastebuds will continue to dance when entrees are served, including Luisa’s Pollo Asado, which features Michoacán citrus chicken, cilantro rice and serrano-tomatillo salsa; Enrique’s Port Wine Braised Center Cut Beef Short Rib with cheddar cheese and green onion red mash, and long green beans with crisp shallots; Pan-Seared Adobo Spiced Sea Bass with seared scallops, rainbow carrots, spinach, romanesco, peas and chimichurri sauce; a Blistered Poblano Pepper stuffed with Oaxaca cheese and green rice; and Red Capsicum and Green Parsley Grilled Snapper with fried yucca, refried beans, baby spinach and pico de gallo.

Dessert will usher in the grand finale of Margarita Lime Cheesecake with a sea salt shortbread and raspberry-agave margarita coulis; Mexican Chocolate Tart with spiced chocolate crème, caramel pecan nuts and chocolate glaze; and Warm Coconut Tres Leches featuring milk-soaked coconut cake, caramel sauce and dulce de leche ice cream.

A Delicious Departure to Zootopia

Guests on the Disney Treasure who step into Jumbeaux’s Sweets will discover a mouthwatering display of specialty treats inspired by the diverse inhabitants from the bustling mammal metropolis featured in Disney Animation’s “Zootopia,” along with a selection of more than 35 flavors of handmade gelato, ice cream, plant-based frozen desserts and sorbets.

  • In a nod to Officer Judy Hopps’ humble upbringing on her family’s carrot farm, the Judy Hopps Carrot Cupcake will feature spiced carrot cake layered between dollops of lemon frosting, white chocolate crème and blueberry compote. The cake will be topped with a chocolate piece portraying Judy and dotted with brightly colored sprinkles.
  • Named for Officer Judy Hopps’ partner in solving crime, the Nick Wilde Raspberry ‘n Cream Cupcake will draw flavor inspiration from the distinct color of Nick’s fur and feature red velvet sponge cake paired with vanilla frosting, white chocolate crème, raspberry compote and a chocolate décor topping.
  • The Paw Shortbread Sandwich will present an elevated take on Nick Wilde’s notorious “pawpcicle.” Two paw-shaped red velvet shortbread cookies filled with vanilla frosting and dulce de leche will be decorated with red fondant and served on a wooden stick to resemble the icy treat from the film.
  • The Mango Leopard Cakesicle will honor the many striped residents of Zootopia with a lemon fudge cake pop drizzled with mango chocolate glaze and decorated with a bold spotted leopard print.
  • A crop of three Carrot Chocolate Covered Strawberries will be served over cookie crumble soil and decorated with piped stems made of frosting.
  • Each Zootopia Chocolate Bark Post Card will represent a beloved character from Disney’s “Zootopia” and carry its own distinct flavor variation that will combine an assortment of dry fruits, nuts and sprinkles in a delicious dark, milk or white chocolate treat.

The Disney Treasure’s maiden voyage, a seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruise from Port Canaveral, Florida, will set sail on Dec. 21, 2024, followed by an inaugural season of seven-night itineraries to the Eastern and Western Caribbean from Port Canaveral.

Oceania Cruises NEW Expanded Relaxed Dining Options

Relaxed Yet Refined, The Finest Cuisine at Sea Redefined
The Finest Cuisine at Sea Redefined

Oceania Cruises, has revealed the next chapter in its culinary story as it highlights new Relaxed Yet Refined dining venues aboard its eight small, luxurious ships.

New sushi and Indian cuisine offerings at Terrace Café and a revamped poolside lunch menu at Waves Grill are in the spotlight as the line redefines The Finest Cuisine at Sea.

Frank A. Del Rio, President of Oceania Cruises, commented: “Food is the foundation of what we do on board each of our ships, and globally, in the destinations we visit. We are renowned for serving The Finest Cuisine at Sea, as it is at the very core of our business.

A Cruise Created by Foodies, For Foodies

“This does not always mean a white linen tablecloth and starched napkins at one of our award-winning specialty restaurants – finest does not always mean the fanciest. It’s also a perfectly prepared pizza or an enticing burrata dish enjoyed al fresco with a crisp glass of white wine as you set sail.”

Bernhard Klotz, Vice President of Food and Beverage, added: “Beauty lies in the simplicity of how we create The Finest Cuisine at Sea; the perfect combination of the most innovative culinary team, the freshest ingredients, and the best food-centric ships, this is where the magic lies.

Food Brings People Together

“Food brings people together, food brings joy; we are here to ensure that every bite of every meal makes our guests smile – from a decadent ice cream sundae by the pool to an exquisite soufflé – The Finest Cuisine at Sea is everywhere on board our ships.”

With the addition of a daily sushi station as well as an Indian Corner in Terrace Café, the venue’s impressive array of international cuisines expands even further. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Terrace Café is the center of the line’s relaxed dining options.

Expansive Sushi Station

The expansive sushi station boasts 45 brand-new recipes, created by Oceania Cruises’ newly appointed Executive Culinary Directors, Chefs Alex Quaretti and Eric Barale, along with their talented team. These include two types of sashimi per day, two types of uramaki, three kinds of nigiri, and a daily vegetarian option.

The new Indian Corner operates once every cruise during dinner service and features 15 authentic Indian recipes.

“Our staff hails from every corner of the globe and being able to bring their knowledge and their experience to the table, literally, is a wonderful thing,” said Chef Alex. “Creating the new Indian dishes for Terrace Café is a perfect example of this; some of these recipes have been handed down through generations. It’s a privilege to be able to see them through a new lens and to bring them to new audiences. The butter chicken and the dhal are already proving to be popular choices with our guests.”

Waves Grill

Waves Grill, Oceania Cruises’ poolside relaxed lunch venue, allows guests to experience the acclaimed culinary reputation of the cruise line without leaving their lounge chairs if they so wish.  The menu has been revamped offering new favorites to sample alongside well-loved signature dishes, which have become the venue’s hallmark.

The menu now features more than 20 revised options, including a new selection of cold sandwiches, plus hot sandwiches and burgers. These include the signature Surf & Turf Wagyu burger; a wagyu beef patty with lobster medallions and truffle mayonnaise; and a new Philly Cheesesteak hot sandwich comprising shredded sirloin steak, provolone, sautéed onion, bell peppers and mushrooms. All are now served with a choice of French fries or sweet potato fries.

More Than 20 Revised Menu Options

“At each of our relaxed yet refined venues, our guests can still savor the ritual and theater of a dining experience. You can linger, relax, and enjoy. Guests are not rushed through, these are absolutely not “fast” food options; it’s simply a different ambiance and setting,” explained Chef Alex.

Not to overlook the line’s award-winning specialty restaurants, Chefs Alex and Eric and their team have more surprises to share before the end of the year as they take a thorough review of all menus across all ships.

Chef Alex said: “We have so much going on ahead of the launch of Allura in just over a year. But there are exciting plans afoot for all our ships. We have new dishes to unveil in Red Ginger, our signature pan-Asian venue; there will be an expansion of Oceania Cruises’ exclusive wine pairing luncheon options; and a fresh look at the menus for the grande dame of the line’s dining venues, The Grand Dining Room.”

Additional information

  • Marina and her sister, Riviera, were the very first true foodie ships in the world, joined now by Vista in 2023, and Allura in 2025, and were the first ships ever to have an onboard cooking school. They have more galley space and more fresh food storage than any other ship, and they were built around the galleys in the shipyard.
  • Oceania Cruises has the highest percentage of culinary personnel devoted to the dining experience than any other cruise company. To ensure the impeccable quality of each dish, the line has one chef for every ten guests; half of the crew on board is dedicated to the cooking or serving of food.

Royal Caribbean International has officially welcomed the next big thing in vacations to the family: Utopia of the Seas. A celebration fit for the ultimate short getaway was had in Saint-Nazaire, France, as the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard handed Royal Caribbean the keys to Utopia just five weekends before its July debut in Port Canaveral (Orlando), Florida.

More than two years of construction culminated in the new vacation’s final building milestone, the delivery, when 1,600-plus crew members and workers came together to mark the moment in the signature AquaTheater. Royal Caribbean Group President and CEO Jason Liberty, Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley and General Manager of Chantiers de l’Atlantique Laurent Castaing hosted Utopia’s first party of many to recognize the achievements of the nautical engineers, designers, architects and more.

7 Things Cruisers Love About Viking Ocean Cruises

7 Things Cruisers Love About Viking Ocean Cruises
Viking Sky Pool

Viking Ocean Cruises continues to expand its fleet to twelve ships. The fast-growing line has gained a firm foothold in the industry and a loyal following among cruisers since Viking, the longtime leader in river cruising, decided to venture into the oceans, as well. It launched its first ocean vessel, Viking Star, in 2015.

Things To Love About Viking Ocean Cruises

Dining at Manfredi's on Viking Sky
The dinners at Manfredi’s Italian restaurant are among the highlights of a Viking Ocean Cruises experience.

The formula for success has been simple. Viking Ocean Cruises ships offer a uniformly excellent experience for cruisers, with a unique blend of luxury, comfort, and inclusive features. Each ship in the fleet has a nearly identical design and carries up to 930 passengers, and each offers several features passengers can rely on no matter what ship or itinerary they choose to sail.

LivNordic Spa

LivNordic Spa on Viking Sky

Passengers get use of Viking’s LivNordic Spa at no additional charge. This included facility offers the chance to experience the true Nordic spa regimen, with a cold plunge pool, snow room, steam room, sauna, “dump bucket,” thalassotherapy pool, hot tub and heated loungers.

The spa is a relaxing space and a fabulous amenity on Viking Ocean ships. Most cruise lines charge passengers a fee to use the thermal suites.

Manfredi’s

Bistecca Fiorentina at Manfredi's on Viking Sky
A perfectly cooked bistecca Fiorentina at Manfredi’s is the eatery’s signature item.

The Italian restaurant on Viking Ocean ships is one of the highlights of your cruise. Each passenger is guaranteed at least one dining experience during their sailing. Then, make sure to get on the list for a second time (based on availability).

The atmosphere and decor in the eatery offer a classic and comfy feel, with pictures of Italian screen stars adorning the walls. The food is also pure comfort, as you start with fresh-made focaccia bread and dinner rolls accompanied by olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dipping. Choose from an array of pastas and delicious sides like steamed black mussels or fried calamari. The signature item in the bistecca Fiorentina, is a perfectly spiced and prepared giant slab of deliciousness that makes meat lovers swoon.

Chef’s Table

The Chef's Table on Viking Sky
The Chef’s Table is a specialty restaurant with a rotating menu of regional cuisine.

This specialty restaurant also is included in your fare, and you need to make a reservation to dine there. You are guaranteed a spot once per sailing, as well. The restaurant features a lineup of menus that rotate. So, you can pick from regional cuisines like Mexican, Scandinavian, Asian and French.

This excellent culinary journey takes you through five courses paired with specially selected wines that complement the flavors.

Pool Deck

Pool deck on Viking Sky
The pool deck can be covered for use in all seasons, and the area features the pool grill, a large screen for movies and plenty of comfortable seating options.

The leisure area on Deck 7 offers ample cushioned chairs and loungers, as well as tables so you can relax in comfort. The roof can be open or closed, meaning it’s an all-weather area. The salt-water pool is heated when cruising in cooler regions, and a large hot tub is a favorite spot to slide into after a day ashore on your excursion.

The Pool Grill is nearby offering a great selection of gourmet burgers and sandwiches, and the pool deck is also the place for special dining events like the seafood feast. You also may catch a movie poolside on the big screen.

Explorers’ Lounge

The Explorers' Lounge on Viking Sky
The Explorers’ Lounge offers two levels at the back of the ship filled with interesting travel-related decor and astounding views.

Located at the top of the ship, this two-deck lounge area is an inviting retreat, especially at night or during sea days. The large floor-to-ceiling windows offer the best views right at the front of the ship, and this is the place to settle in to enjoy a little live piano or guitar music or a conversation with new friends while sitting on the soft couches and chairs, warmly decorated with animal furs and pillows.

The Explorers’ Lounge also is filled with bookshelves holding reading materials and art pieces highlighting travel and history. The ship’s Scandinavian comfort-food eatery Mamsen’s is also located in this venue. It’s open for breakfast and lunch and afternoon and late-night snacks. Be sure to try a fresh waffle with brown goat cheese or the split pea soup.

The Wintergarden

The Wintergarden on Viking Sky
The Winter Garden is a Scandinavian oasis and a place to enjoy afternoon tea.

Another nice place to relax, the Wintergarden is located adjacent to the pool area and is distinctive because of its Scandinavian-chic design. The clean and inviting space features a light-wood sculpture that wraps the columns and ceiling space to give the feel of being in a Norwegian forest.

Afternoon tea is hosted in the Wintergarden, complete with live music accompaniment, fresh scones, and a tower of finger sandwiches and pastries.

Cruise Compete

The Extra Goodies

Viking offers a complimentary shore excursion in each port. These are typically the “City Tour” variety. (You can purchase premium excursions, as well.) The line’s Silver Spirits drinks package is an amazing value when compared with the cruise industry at large. A charge of $19.95 per person per day covers your sodas, wines, mixed drinks, and beer. Additionally, beer and wine are included during meal times in the ship’s restaurants.

The ship features complimentary WiFi service, and free self-service laundry facilities are located throughout the ship.

7 Steps to a Hassle-Free Embarkation Day

7 Steps to a Hassle-Free Embarkation Day
7 Steps to a Hassle-Free Embarkation Day

Your cruise vacation begins as soon as you set foot on the ship and receive that welcome glass of sparkling wine from the smiling crew members.

Carnival Cruise Line Guy's Pig and Anchor
Alternative venues, such as Guy’s Pig and Anchor Bar-B-Que on some Carnival Cruise Line ship, may be open for lunch on embarkation day. These often make a better alternative than the crowded buffet areas.

To make the most of your valuable time and to get your cruise off to a great start, you’re going to want to have a smooth embarkation day. The process of getting on a big ship is notoriously one of the most stressful parts of the cruise experience. This is because so many others are arriving onboard at the exact same time, often leading to a crush of passengers in the same spaces until you all get spread out and settled in.

You can avoid some of the hassles and frustrations that keep you from finding your vacation groove by following our best tips and tricks to enjoy a hassle-free embarkation day.

Before You Head Out

Cruise lines allow you to check in for your cruise online. You can print out your ship’s “boarding passes” and create a file of your paperwork that is easy to access so you are ready to show the agents who greet you at the cruise port. This saves you from hold-ups that can result when you have to fill out forms and go through extra checks at the cruise terminal.

Arrive Early, But Not Too Early

Most large cruise lines “clear” their ships by 10 a.m. This is the process of getting all the passengers who are finishing their cruise just before yours off of the ship. If you arrive at the cruise pier before the ship is cleared, you will wait (and wait and wait). It makes sense that you want to get onboard as early as you can so that you can maximize the time on the ship and start enjoying the amenities and food.

But after about 11 a.m. is probably the safest time to arrive and not expect too long of a wait. Some cruise lines offer a program like Carnival’s “Faster to the Fun” (for a fee) that gives you priority boarding for your cruise. If you book a suite, you also typically receive priority boarding perks. Consider these options if you want to be among the first passengers onto the ship.

Drop the Bags

7 Steps to a Hassle-Free Embarkation Day | 18
7 Steps to a Hassle-Free Embarkation Day 81

Your staterooms are being turned over typically until about 2 p.m. when they will be all cleaned, prepared and ready for your stay. Until then, you need to do something with your luggage so that you don’t have to lug it around for a couple hours on the ship.

You can lighten your load by dropping your bags curbside with the cruise terminal porters. They will load them onto big carts and ensure that they get onto the ship and eventually to your stateroom. Make sure you have affixed a baggage tag indicating your name and cabin number. You also should tip your porter a buck or two per bag.

We generally like to carry on our own luggage on because we pack light and want to have it as soon as the cabins are available (bags left with the porter service can sometimes arrive hours after your staterooms are made available, which is frustrating). So, we go straight to our cabins to drop off our bags. Here is the trick: The corridors are usually closed to passengers while the cleaning is in progress. But you can open the doors, go to your stateroom and let your steward know that you simply want to slide the bags under the bed or somewhere else out of the way while they clean. Be polite and leave quickly, so he or she can get on with turning over the cabins. It’s a tough day for them, too, so don’t dawdle in the room and be sure to show appreciation for allowing you to drop off your bags.

Avoid the Buffet

Cruisers naturally arrive hungry and ready for lunch when they board their ship. The buffet is a hot spot, of course, and you will find crowds of people all in the same place as they quickly grab up tables and form lines at the buffet.

This scene is perhaps the biggest source of frustration on embarkation day. Make your way to the main dining room or any of the smaller venues onboard that will be open for lunch, such as a poolside grill serving burgers and other sandwiches or the ship’s pizza eatery or café with lighter fare.

You will be able to get something tasty and find a table without any problems. In the main dining room, you order from a menu and enjoy a much more relaxing experience as you are served by staff at your table.

In the Bag

Prepare a day bag or backpack to bring on that you can easily carry around with some items that you will want while you wait to get to your stateroom. Place essentials in it, such as a swim suit, book, Kindle, magazines, sunscreen, phone charger and any needed medications.

This means you can use a restroom to change into your swim suit and start enjoying the pool and other amenities in comfort.

Have a Look Around

This is also a good time to give yourself a tour of the ship, going deck by deck to learn the layout and where everything is located. If you take an hour to learn all the spots on the ship, you’ll quickly pick out your favorite spots to enjoy during your cruise – and be less likely to get lost.

Get Your Goodies Booked

While touring, stop by the spa for a tour and book any treatments you might want. If you have your eye on a massage or facial or other treatment, getting there early ensures that you get your preferred time and day for your appointment. Do this for any specialty restaurants, too, that you want to dine at. (Note: many cruise lines allow you to book dining online ahead of the cruise, and they even offer dining packages that include discounts.)

Start Enjoying Your Cruise

If you’ve followed all our tips, that means you have avoided the crowds, satisfied your appetite with a good meal, set up all your appointments for the cruise and learned your way around the ship. There is nothing left now except to order up your favorite fruity drink or cold beer and start enjoying your cruise vacation with all your new friends.
