Cruise Ship Historian Peter Knego

Peter shares details about his collection of items that are now on display and part of the Golden Jubilee lounge onboard this new ship. You will also learn unique facts about his work  and he provides us insights about other items guests can find aboard this incredible ship filled with historical objects from past Carnival Cruise Line ships.

The Golden Jubilee

The Golden Jubilee, on Deck 6, in the same location as The Brass Magnolia on Mardi Gras, features artwork, memorabilia and original pieces from Carnival’s earlier vessels that are incorporated throughout the space bringing Carnival’s 50 years of fun full circle. These include:

  • A striking bar beneath two-deck-high ceilings adorned with a multi-piece brass chandelier and surrounded by reproductions of blueprints depicting the evolution of Carnival’s Fun Ships, including some hand-drawn designs by world-renowned architect Joe Farcus.
  • Chairs recreated from TSS Carnivale’s Riverboat Lounge paired with cocktail tables from Carnival Fascination’s Hollywood Boulevard adorned with signed sketches representing movie classics by iconic caricaturist Al Hirschfeld.
  • Original 17’ by 7’ full-height etched glass, nickel and mahogany partition wall with 24 windowpanes from TSS Mardi Gras’ casino, separating the bar from the promenade.
  • Original decorative etchings of musical instruments as well as polished brass and glass night club doors from TSS Carnivale that will frame one of the lounge’s entrances, allowing guests to physically walk through Carnival’s history.
  • Original bronze statue of Carnival founder Ted Arison and Finnish shipbuilder Martin Saarikangas, given as a gift from the Kvaerner Masa-Yards to the line upon delivery of Carnival Sensation in Helsinki, Finland, in 1993.
  • Reproductions of hand-drawn sketches by Farcus blended into mirrors, offering guests a glimpse into special Carnival moments like Carnival Fascination’s naming ceremony and Carnival Inspiration’s first transit of the Panama Canal.
  • Floor tiles surrounding the bar that feature a stylized maple leaf pattern reminiscent of the maple leaf design motif from the Grand Ballroom on TSS Mardi Gras that carried over from the ship’s former life as Empress of Canada for Canadian Pacific Line.
  • Mirror inserts integrated into the bar front and bottle display inspired by the etched glass inserts of TSS Carnivale’s main lobby doors.

Carnival Celebration Review, Carnival’s Incredible New Ship

Carnival Celebration
Carnival Celebration sailing away from Port Miami

I had the pleasure of sailing aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship, the Carnival Celebration. Our sailing was one of her first from Port Miami, I was invited to sail as a guest with a media group. Our itinerary was a seven-night cruise from Port Miami, and we sailed a Western Caribbean cruise itinerary with port stops in Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Mahogany Bay. In this review, I will be sharing my opinions after sailing aboard this fantastic new ship from Carnival.

Carnival Celebration is the second ship in the Excel Class, and she is 183,521 gross tons. The ship features 2,687 staterooms with a guest capacity of 5,374. She also has six unique Zones: Celebration Station, The Gateway, Summer Landing, 820 Biscayne, Lido, and The Ultimate Playground.

Carnival Celebration Review

This would be my first cruise aboard one of Carnival Cruise Line’s new Excel Class ships. I had only been able to have a brief media visit preview for a day aboard Carnival’s Mardi Gras before her inaugural cruise. I have sailed numerous times aboard many classes of Carnival Cruise ships, so I was excited to have the opportunity to experience this incredible ship firsthand.

Embarkation

On embarkation day, we boarded the new Carnival Celebration at Carnival Cruise Line’s newly remodeled Terminal F at Port Miami. This beautiful terminal is now enlarged and designed to fit the larger Excel class ships like Carnival Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration. Our check-in went very smoothly, and the line moved quickly. Before long we were onboard exploring the ship.

Our Cabin

Our assigned cabin was a standard balcony on Deck 10 in stateroom number 10458. We found it to be very spacious with a comfortable and well-thought-out design. There was also plenty of closet space and storage for our clothes and items for a seven-night cruise.

Here is a video tour of our stateroom onboard:

Watch our Carnival Celebration room tour of cabin # 10458

We also appreciated the excellent new accent lighting around the desk’s mirror and the bed’s headboard. The cabin also had a very nice-sized TV mounted on the wall. The stateroom’s new color scheme and styling were very friendly and contemporary.

The stateroom features USB ports on both sides of the bed and LED reading lamps. The desk area also had plenty of power outlets and USB ports. Overall, we enjoyed this stateroom during our cruise, and I am always impressed by the many details Carnival integrates into its stateroom design.

Carnival HUB App

If you plan to take a Carnival cruise, download the Carnival HUB App before boarding your ship. It is loaded with features that will make your cruise more enjoyable. This is a must to keep up with the daily activities, dining reservations, and available dining options throughout your cruise. Now that everything is done on the app, you must utilize it during your next cruise.

Cruise Ship

The Carnival Celebration is incredible with everything it has to offer. It has a complete waterpark for kids and even a mini-golf course. The ship has a nice-sized main pool on the Lido deck and two aft Infinity pools.

We really enjoyed the sizeable adults-only Serenity deck that now has its own pool. If you want a more exclusive experience, you can get a pass to the LOFT 19 area that includes padded loungers and access to the infinity whirlpool and attentive servers.

The Carnival Celebration is the second ship to have BOLT, the Ultimate Sea coaster. BOLT is full of drops, twists, and turns 187 feet above the water line at incredible speeds.

We feel this ship is special because it has so many unique spaces for families traveling together to enjoy.

Golden Jubilee

On Deck 6, the Golden Jubilee features artwork, memorabilia, and original pieces from Carnival’s earlier vessels perfectly incorporated throughout the space, bringing Carnival’s 50 years of fun full circle. We loved the reproduction of blueprints depicting the evolution of Carnival’s Fun Ships, including some hand-drawn designs by world-renowned architect Joe Farcus in the ceiling.

We also learned about the Original 17’ by 7’ full-height etched glass, nickel, and mahogany partition wall with 24 TSS Mardi Gras casino windowpanes, separating the bar from the promenade. This item and many others on display were carefully salvaged by fellow journalist and ship historian Peter Knego before these ships were destroyed entirely. I had the chance to sit down and talk to Peter about his work and many of these fascinating and historic items onboard the Carnival Celebration. Be sure to watch our interview with Peter Knego about the Golden Jubilee.

Dining/Food

The Carnival Celebration is loaded with dining options. Most of them are complimentary and exceptionally good from fan favorites like Guy’s Burger Joint and new options like Big Chicken and Street Eats. You will not go hungry on this ship.

One of our favorites is the pizza called Miami Slice onboard. We enjoyed this several times during our cruise and loved grabbing a slice and enjoying the alfresco seating nearby. This ship has a tremendous amount of outdoor seating options, and it makes the ship more enjoyable.

Fahrenheit 555

Our dinner at Fahrenheit 555 was awe-inspiring. I found the steak cooked to perfection. It honestly was one of the best steaks I have ever had. The service and overall experience were very lovely and a great value overall.

Rudi’s Seagrill
Rudi’s Seagrill (Photo By John Shallo / Cruise Addicts)

Rudi’s Seagrill

This was my first visit to Rudi’s Seagrill and I enjoyed the superb seafood and other items we chose. It has a very high-end experience feel, and I would consider it for a romantic dinner during your cruise. This venue should not be missed if you are a seafood lover and want to try something special during your cruise.

Guy’s Pig and Anchor

We were able to visit Guy’s Pig & Anchor and walk right up and be seated. We enjoyed the food very much. I love how this is complimentary aboard the Carnival Celebration. However, the noise level of the band playing was a bit overwhelming during our dinner. So you may want to eat when the band is not playing or be sure to be seated a reasonable distance from the band due to the volume.

Bonsai Sushi

One night we visited Bonsai Sushi to sample some items. We had never eaten here before on any of the other Carnival ships, so we wanted to try some things. We enjoyed things very much. Our favorites here are the sushi and tempura dish.

Emeril’s Bistro

We visited Emeril’s Bistro 1397 and stopped in and ordered the Beignes for $5 (powdered sugar, strawberry sauce, chocolate sauce) twice during our cruise and LOVED them, and they were perfect.

We saw many people having full meals here, and it all looked and smelled amazing. Be sure to check out Emeril’s Bistro 1397 menu. To view the menu, click here. One of the most significant issues aboard Carnival Celebration is all the excellent and complimentary food offerings. You won’t go hungry aboard this ship; we found everything delicious.

Cucina del Capitano

We have had dinner at Cucina del Capitanto several times on previous Carnival ships, so we stopped in for Lunch one day during our cruise. I ordered my favorite linguine and clam sauce. I also ordered some added shrimp to make it extra special.

Dinner here is an incredible and unique experience, but the clam sauce they use for the lunch pasta is so wonderful that it is a must-have during any Carnival cruise for me. I loved it as always and enjoyed the enhanced items and service they had aboard the Carnival Celebration during our cruise. On past Carnival cruises, my family and I would always come here to eat while waiting for our cabin to be available on busy embarkation days. It’s so good!

Sea Day Brunch

During our cruise, we enjoyed a Sea Day Brunch, and I ordered the House Special Skillet Cake. In the past, I would always order Steak and Eggs. And my daughters would always get the incredible Mac N’ Cheese.

Sea Day Brunch is offered in the main dining room from 8:30 am until noon, only on sea days. If you haven’t been to a Sea Day Brunch, I can sum it up in one word, incredible. So set the alarm and don’t miss your chance for a great meal. Here is a link to the Sea Day Brunch menu – click here to view the menu.

Ports/Itinerary

Our cruise visited three ports in the Western Caribbean, Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Mahogany Bay.  We also had three sea days.

Cozumel

In Cozumel, we did Tabasco’s Chef Maestro, Cooking & Tasting excursion booked through Carnival Cruise Line. This included transportation to and from the port.

This was one of the best excursions we had ever taken. Everyone in our group enjoyed it. It was a very entertaining and informative class from start to finish. We learned how to create a delicious 3-course authentic meal. Knowing the different ingredients and cooking techniques that made the menu items complete was delightful. The Tabasco Chef class is located on the second floor of the prestigious Blu by Dolphinaris facility. So the location was incredible, and we enjoyed the fantastic views and watching the dolphins in the pools near the ocean.

Costa Maya

In Costa Maya, we chose to stay aboard the ship and enjoy everything it had to offer. Leading up to this port day, we hadn’t booked any excursions, so it was nice to have the ship tour ourselves while many of the ship’s guests were off the ship enjoying this port. If you haven’t done this before, you might be surprised how different the ship can be during these times. Suddenly, there are very few or no lines, and the whole ship has a different vibe. We chose to take it easy, have a slice of pizza al fresco, look at the many ships in port with us today, and relax.

Mahogany Bay

We took the VIP Premium All Inclusive Beach Day excursion in Mahogany Bay through the ship. We enjoyed the drive over to a very private beachfront resort and then were escorted to a reserved VIP area of the beach with lounge chairs, umbrellas, palapas, and beach towels.

The service, amenities, and food were all incredible. They even had some live music playing. I would highly recommend this shore excursion to anyone visiting Mahogany Bay. This was our first time here, and we loved it. This was one of the best excursions we experienced from start to finish.

Insights & Observations

During our cruise, we utilized a Wi-Fi package, and Carnival seems to have some of the best internet connections that work well around the whole ship, even in your cabin. My wife and I quickly connected two devices with our package and never lost service.

Shopping Onboard

Carnival Cruise Line has taken shopping to the next level. You won’t be disappointed if you are shopping for some vacation souvenir or a duty-free luxury watch or purse. During our cruise, our group toured the many shops and learned how the ship has exclusive items not only to Carnival Cruise Line but also unique items only found onboard this ship.

Cruise Director Lee Mason

During our cruise, we had the privilege of having award-winning Cruise Director Lee Mason welcome us onboard and be our guide for Fun and escape for our week onboard. I took the opportunity to sit down for an interview with him. It was an absolute pleasure to meet Lee in person finally. He is such an impressive human. Please watch our interview here:

Carnival Cruise Director Lee Mason interview aboard the Carnival Celebration

Overall the crew and officers aboard the Carnival Celebration were attentive and upbeat. During this cruise, we had the privilege of meeting the Captain of the ship and his officers, shop managers, and more. Everyone is very passionate and professional about offering guests a unique, safe, and enjoyable vacation experience onboard.

Entertainment and Comedy

One of my favorite things about taking a cruise is the entertainment and comedy available onboard. Sometimes you have more choices than time, but that’s a good thing, right?

On board, we attended several comedy shows in the Punchliner Comedy Club and the Limelight Lounge. The comedians were both outstanding and were so entertaining. They were also very approachable, shaking hands and taking pictures with guests as we exited the show. I thought this was wonderful and shows how touched guests were by seeing such talented entertainers live.

Watching live music during the cruise, up close from string trios, piano players, full rock bands, and more, makes a Carnival Cruise extra special. Most evenings, you could watch live music shows in six other venues throughout the ship. The choice and quality make for a memorable evening.

Center Stage (Celebration Central Atrium)

Both the Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras have this fantastic new stage in the new large atrium area of the ship. The area is stunningly beautiful and loaded with incredible technology. However, Carnival is trying to do full-production shows here, and the demand to see these shows far outweighs the available seats.

This area wasn’t designed to seat enough guests for their current high-demand shows. The sight lines are ok for looking directly at the stage but not always for some of the show’s aerial stunts. So even if you can find a seat, it may be partially obstructed. We saw guests waiting in line for hours or saving the open seats on the higher levels to have a chance to see these fantastic performances.

So I believe they will have to offer tickets to this venue so it can be used in a more organized manner in the future. I applaud Carnival for using this space to its fullest, but it may have been too much of a good thing in this small space, and I hope they will utilize the larger seating theater for the high-demand shows in the future.

Final Thoughts

The Carnival Celebration is a beautiful ship that offers an incredible big ship experience for both families and couples at a great price. This ship is extra special with its unique dining and entertainment opportunities. If you don’t have a cruise aboard the Carnival Celebration, click here to keep up with the latest prices and deals.

Expedition Cruising a Growing trend

What do first time Expedition Cruisers need to know?

Taking an expedition-style cruise for the first time can be an exciting and rewarding adventure. These cruises offer a unique opportunity to explore remote and often untouched destinations while immersing yourself in nature and wildlife. Here are some important things to know before embarking on an expedition cruise:

Itinerary and Flexibility: Expedition cruises often have flexible itineraries due to weather, wildlife sightings, and other unpredictable factors. Be prepared for changes and trust your expedition team’s decisions, as they prioritize safety and maximizing your experience.

Small Ship Experience: Expedition cruises typically use smaller ships designed for navigating remote waters and reaching unique destinations that larger vessels can’t access. This allows for a more intimate and immersive experience.

Wildlife and Nature Focus: Expedition cruises are centered around exploring and appreciating nature, wildlife, and ecosystems. The guides on board will provide insights into the flora, fauna, and geology of the areas you visit.

Expert Guides: Expedition cruises are accompanied by experienced naturalist guides who are knowledgeable about the destinations and the wildlife you’ll encounter. They offer lectures, guided hikes, and informative talks to enhance your understanding of the environment.

Limited Passenger Capacity: Small ships mean fewer passengers, which fosters a sense of camaraderie among travelers and allows for a more personalized experience.

Remote Destinations: Expedition cruises often take you to remote and pristine areas, away from typical tourist routes. This offers a chance to experience nature in its purest form.

Clothing and Gear: Depending on your destination and activities, pack appropriate clothing and gear such as comfortable hiking shoes, waterproof and windproof clothing, sun protection, and binoculars for wildlife viewing.

Physical Fitness: Some activities, like hiking and snorkeling, may require a certain level of physical fitness. It’s a good idea to be reasonably fit to fully enjoy the experience.

Respect for the Environment: Expedition cruises emphasize eco-friendliness and responsible travel. Follow the “Leave No Trace” principle and adhere to the guidelines provided by your guides to minimize your impact on the environment.

Seasickness: While modern expedition ships are equipped with stabilizers to reduce motion, seasickness can still be an issue for some. Consider bringing motion sickness remedies if you’re prone to discomfort on the water.

Social Interaction: Expedition cruises encourage interaction with fellow travelers, fostering a sense of community among passengers who share a passion for exploration and nature.

Booking in Advance: Expedition cruises can fill up quickly due to their limited capacity and high demand. It’s advisable to book well in advance to secure your preferred travel dates and cabin type.

Photography: Bring a good camera or smartphone with a decent camera to capture the stunning landscapes and wildlife you’ll encounter. Remember to respect wildlife by maintaining a safe distance and not disturbing them for a photo.

Local Cultures: Expedition cruises often include interactions with local communities if the itinerary permits. Be respectful and open-minded when engaging with local cultures.

Expedition cruising offers a chance to connect with nature, explore remote destinations, and gain a deeper understanding of the world around us. By keeping these important points in mind, you can make the most of your first expedition-cruise and create lasting memories of a unique and enriching journey.

How is an expedition cruise different from the traditional cruises that have been around for decades?

There are some key differences between expedition cruises and traditional cruises:

Size – Expedition ships are much smaller, usually under 250 passengers compared to traditional cruise ships that can have thousands of passengers. This allows expedition ships to access more remote locations.

Expedition Cruising a Growing trend | 26

Destinations – Expedition cruises visit more adventurous destinations like the polar regions, Alaska, the Galapagos, remote islands, etc. Traditional cruises tend to visit more populated ports and cities.

Here are some of the top expedition cruise destinations that have growing in popularity throughout 2023 and most likely will be only getting more attention in 2024 and beyond:

Antarctica – Antarctica cruises continue to be highly sought after for the chance to see majestic icebergs, penguins, whales and polar wildlife up close. The Antarctic season runs from November to March. Voyagers Travel has released its 2024 offerings for Antarctica.

Arctic – Cruising around the Arctic regions of northern Norway, Greenland, Iceland and Canada allows passengers to see glaciers, fjords and potential northern lights. Peak season is June to August. Quark Expeditions is one of the leaders in this area.

Galapagos Islands – This unique Ecuadorian archipelago with its abundance of wildlife and bird species remains a bucket list destination for many cruisers. The best time to visit is typically December to May. Voyagers Travel has many cruise options for the Galapagos.

Kimberley Coast, Australia – Remote and rugged, the Kimberley region in northwest Australia is known for its stunning, untouched landscape. Expeditions cruise here from April to October. The local expert is Coral Expeditions.

Alaska – Cruising along Alaska’s coastline and glaciers is a popular way to see majestic sights like Glacier Bay, Denali and the Inside Passage. The main cruising season is May to September. Many larger liners also offer exploring Alaska, you can find small ship offerings with Limblad Expeditons

West Africa – Expedition cruises traveling along the coasts of West African countries like Ghana, Ivory Coast and Gabon are on the rise. The dry season from November to April is the ideal time. Hurtigruten offers itineraries around West Africa and Cape Verde.

South Pacific – Remote island nations like Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Fiji that offer stunning beaches and exotic cultures are increasing in popularity as expedition destinations. The dry season from May to October is best. Here you can go all out in luxury with Seabourn yachts.

Activities – Expedition cruises have activities like kayaking, hiking, polar plunges, Zodiac excursions, and hands-on educational experiences. Traditional cruises focus more on entertainment, dining, pools, shows and relaxation.

Expedition Cruising a Growing trend | 26

Cost – Expedition cruises are generally more expensive due to the smaller ships, more staff, landing fees and advanced specialty gear needed. Traditional cruises can be very affordable, especially Caribbean itineraries.

Ambiance – The atmosphere on expedition ships is casual, laid-back and centered around the destination adventures. Traditional cruises have a more formal vibe with entertainment and dining as the focus.

Comfort – Expedition ships offer comfortable but not lavish accommodations. Traditional cruises have larger staterooms, multiple restaurants and ample lounging areas.

Itineraries – Expedition itineraries are flexible to adapt to changing nature and weather conditions. Traditional cruise itineraries are usually very port-focused and consistent.

So in short, expedition cruises are more adventurous and destination-focused, while traditional cruises offer more amenities, dining, entertainment and a fixed itinerary.

Why are travelers drawn to expedition cruises ?

There are several appealing factors that draw travelers to expedition cruises:

Adventure – Expedition cruises offer the chance to explore remote polar regions, jungles, islands and other hard-to-reach destinations in an adventurous way. Activities like hiking, kayaking and polar plunges add excitement.

Learning – There is a major educational component with lectures from experts and naturalists as well as shore excursions that focus on nature, wildlife and culture. Passengers gain new knowledge.

Unique Wildlife – Seeing Antarctica’s penguins, the Arctic wildlife like polar bears and whales, the Galapagos’ endemic species, etc. is a major draw for many. It’s a way to see rare animals.

Remoteness – The lure of traveling to somewhere off the beaten path, like Antarctica or Papua New Guinea, intrigues travelers. It’s a totally different experience from regular vacations.

Flexibility – Expedition ships can change course and take advantage of wildlife sightings or weather. This spontaneity and flexibility is part of the adventure.

Scenery – Dramatic landscapes like icebergs, fjords, rugged coasts and turquoise lagoons provide stunning and ever-changing scenery.

Small Groups – Expedition ships have under 200 passengers for a more intimate, immersive experience with expert guides leading the way.

Sustainability – Many expedition companies highlight sustainability, conservation, and responsible travel. This appeals to eco-conscious travelers.

Bucket List – For some travelers, visiting Antarctica or seeing the Amazon is a once-in-a-lifetime trip and worth the splurge. It’s a bucket list achievement.

Things to take into account before deciding on an expedition cruise

Expedition cruising is on the runway and everybody has their eyes on it, but it is important to take into account several considerations before booking the same trip the Jones’s took last month.

Are insurance requirements more stricter for expedition cruises?

Yes, insurance requirements tend to be more strict and comprehensive for expedition cruises compared to traditional cruises. There are a few reasons for this:

Remote locations – Expedition cruises often travel to very remote areas like the polar regions, deep in the Amazon, distant islands, etc. If an emergency occurs, rescue or medical care may be days away.

Expedition Cruising a Growing trend | 26

Activities – The activities on expedition cruises like kayaking, hiking and Zodiac excursions tend to be more physically demanding and risky than on typical cruises. This increases chances of injury.

Weather conditions – The weather can be unpredictable and extreme in some expedition destinations. Things like storms, swells, ice and snow can disrupt plans.

No ports – Weeks may pass without stopping at a port on some expedition itineraries. This limits the ability to evacuate someone who needs urgent care onshore.

Limited infrastructure – Remote destinations often lack developed infrastructure for medical care, hospitals, etc. This is especially true in the polar regions.

For these reasons, evacuation insurance, medical/travel insurance, medical air transport coverage and trip cancellation/interruption insurance tend to be requirements for purchasing an expedition cruise. The insurance provides an added safety net. You can find comprehensive policies by World Nomads.

Do you need a travel advisor to help you book an expedition cruise?

Booking an expedition cruise directly with the cruise company is certainly an option. However, there are some potential benefits to using a travel advisor:

Expertise – A good travel advisor specializes in expedition cruises and remote destinations. They can provide guidance on the best options for your interests, budget, experience level, etc.

Savings – Travel advisors can sometimes access promotions, discounts or added perks that aren’t available to the general public booking directly.

Objectivity – Rather than just selling you on a specific company’s cruises, an advisor can offer more impartial advice across multiple expedition lines.

Experience matching – Advisors help ensure the cruise you book matches your personal abilities/fitness level, interests and expectations.

Handling issues – If any problems come up pre-trip or during the voyage, a travel advisor can help manage changes, cancellations or concerns.

Planning – Advisors assist with all aspects of planning like flights, pre/post hotels, packing lists, documentation and more.

While not absolutely mandatory, agents can simplify the booking process, get you the best value and make sure an expedition cruise is a good fit. But do your research to find an advisor truly specialized in expedition travel.

Are you ready for an expedition cruise?

Expedition Cruising a Growing trend | 26
Seaman journey catamaran sailing between islands in Galapagos – Latin Trails

Here are some ways to “know your limits” when booking an expedition cruise:

Physical limits – Be realistic about your physical health, stamina, mobility and susceptibility to seasickness. Expedition activities like hiking, kayaking or wet landings can be strenuous. Be sure you meet the cruise’s guidelines.

Adventure limits – Assess your appetite for risk, adventure and flexibility. These trips often involve changeable weather, close wildlife encounters and basic amenities. Keep an open mind but know what you can handle.

Social limits – Small ships mean less privacy. Understand your preferences for social settings, groups, sharing meals and activities with strangers. Can you handle constant social interaction?

Independence limits – You’ll be part of a group guided by experts. Those wanting complete autonomy may get frustrated. Be okay with following instructions and guides.

Comfort limits – Don’t expect luxury. Understand these are working expeditions with potential rough seas and basic cabins. Lower your creature comfort expectations.

Budget limits – Know what you can realistically afford after costs like flights, gear, insurance, etc. Destinations like Antarctica carry hefty price tags.

Health limits – Disclose medical/dietary issues upfront. Access to doctors is limited. Chronic conditions may preclude going to extreme locations.

By honestly assessing your limits across these areas, you’ll know if an expedition cruise is the right type of travel for you. An experienced advisor can also guide you in choosing the best option tailored to your personal limits and comfort level.

SpaceX’s Starlink

“Our project team has already equipped three ships in the AIDA fleet with Starlink antennas and the field test has been very convincing. Guests and crew appreciate the faster internet connections and enjoy the more comfortable web surfing. Digital work on board is also made easier. We are very much looking forward to offering this new standard on all ships very soon,” reports Steffi Heinicke, Senior Vice President Guest Experience & OBR.

On AIDAblu, AIDAbella and AIDAstella, guests can already benefit from a Starlink special offer with increased data volumes in the Internet packages from mid-July. The connection of the fleet to the new broadband connection that AIDA makes possible, is a significant benefit for their crew. This milestone improves communication to AIDA shore colleagues and thus intensifies cooperation. The lived AIDA culture becomes even more alive as a result. By increasing the data volume, each individual crew member benefits in terms of private use. The regular exchange with family and friends gives employees a feeling of being at home at sea. Their shared moments from life and work on board on their own social media channels offer individual insights into the diverse AIDA job worlds.

AIDA Fleet Rollout

The fleet rollout of Starlink within Carnival Corporation started in December 2022 with Carnival Cruise Line and AIDA Cruises ships. Thanks to the exemplary and dedicated work of the AIDA project team, the fleet-wide connection to Space X’s Starlink low earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology and associated IT infrastructure will be completed on AIDA ships ahead of schedule, by mid-October 2023.

In the future, AIDA guests and crew members will have access to a reliable, fast and even more affordable Internet connection in all AIDA destinations through a combination of different technologies, services and broadband connections. This opens up completely new possibilities for travelers who cannot do without the Internet or who want to stay in touch with friends and family and share their travel experiences.

Guests can take advantage of this introductory offer until the complete conversion of the entire AIDA fleet, which is planned for fall 2023. During the summer, the ships AIDAprima, AIDAperla, AIDAnova and AIDAcosma will also be equipped. Cunard has also revealed four additional dining experiences that will be available on Queen Anne – Aji Wa, Aranya, Sir Samuels, and Tramonto – offering guests more choice than ever before.

Three of these original venues aboard the luxury cruise line’s newest ship will be alternative evening dining options, available as a supplement, complementing the inclusive fare options offered for lunch or dinner in Tramonto and the Golden Lion pub.

The epitome of a high-end steakhouse, Sir Samuels will showcase the very best of British and Australian beef and seafood, complemented by an exceptional wine program. Selected for their provenance, steaks will be of the highest quality and seared to perfection. Alongside a vast array of beef options, there will also be a wide range of fish and seafood dishes. All the produce has been sourced responsibly to bring the freshest ingredients to the table.

Tramonto will transport guests to the sun-kissed shores of the Mediterranean, with a menu full of fresh flavors and an opportunity for guests to dine alfresco while watching the sun set on a warm summer evening.

Guests will also have exclusive use of dining appropriate to their stateroom type, from the grand two-tiered Britannia restaurant, the largest Britannia Club restaurant in the fleet, to the opulent settings of the Princess Grill and Queens Grill Restaurants.

“We’re excited to share a flavor of what will be served on board Queen Anne in 2024,” said Matt Gleaves, VP, Commercial, Cunard North America. “Cunard is renowned for high quality dining options, and we’re delighted to be working with the very best chefs, at the top of their different culinary fields, to offer such a wide range of dining options to our guests. Students Interested in Maritime Careers

The Maritime Careers Summer Camp exposes rising eighth to 10th-grade students interested in maritime careers to a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The free week-long camp has served more than 100 Galveston County students since 2015. In addition to the visit to the Galveston Wharves and Carnival Breeze, the camp includes other experiences such as tours of the cargo port and naval vessels, visits to active military training facilities and hands-on work designing and constructing autonomous underwater vehicles.

“The Port of Galveston is an economic engine and a generator of jobs for our community,” said Rees. “These students have the fourth most popular cruise home port and a top U.S. cargo port right in their own backyards. It was a pleasure to educate them on the many job opportunities available to them in the maritime industry.”

Port of Galveston

Carnival was the first cruise line to launch year-round cruising from the Port of Galveston and the line will carry more than 650,000 guests from Galveston in 2023. Carnival Jubilee, the next new ship in the Excel class, will first sail from Galveston on Dec. 23, 2023, joining Carnival Breeze and Carnival Dream operating from Galveston year-round. In 2024, Carnival will increase its deployment to four ships when Carnival Miracle begins operating from the port.

“With this summer camp, the Chamber aims to inspire the next generation of Galveston maritime professionals,” said Spagnola. “We are so appreciative of Carnival for taking part in this year’s camp and know that this tour will go a long way in making an impact on our local students.”
