NCL’s Most Extensive Ship Revitalization

As the most extensive bow-to-stern revitalization of any ship in the Company’s history, Norwegian Spirit’s enhancements include a doubled-in-size Mandara Spa, complete with a new thermal suite and relaxation area; an expanded Pulse Fitness Center; and the second Onda by Scarpetta restaurant at sea. New complimentary dining venues include an additional main dining room, Taste; the 24-hour eatery, The Local Bar and Grill; the all-day dining outlet, Garden Café; the Great Outdoors Bar; and Waves Pool Bar. Making their debut are Bliss Ultra Lounge and Spinnaker Lounge, which features the Humidor Cigar Lounge, as well as the adults-only retreat Spice H2O, a daytime lounge featuring two new hot tubs and a dedicated bar, which transforms into an after-hours entertainment venue.

As of Jan. 1, 2020, Norwegian Cruise Line is the first major cruise line to eliminate single-use plastic beverage bottles across its entire fleet, an effort made possible through a recent partnership with JUST Goods, Inc.

“It is truly exciting to celebrate Norwegian Spirit’s sail out of dry dock to incredible destinations following her significant renovation,” said Harry Sommer, president, and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Europe is the number one destination for international arrivals, and we are very proud to position Norwegian Spirit for her first post-dry-dock season in this high-demand region. Our brand has been recognized 12 times in a row by the World Travel Awards as ‘Europe’s Leading Cruise Line’ and we are thrilled to offer our guests even more great itineraries in the region, allowing them to explore multiple destinations while unpacking only once.”

European Cruise Options

The revitalized Norwegian Spirit further strengthens the Company’s presence in Europe, where the cruise line will position a total of seven ships in 2020: Norwegian Spirit, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Star, Norwegian Epic and Norwegian Jade.

Princess Cruises Sets World Record for Largest Vow Renewal

Princess Cruises Sets World Record
Guinness World Record for “Largest Multi-Location Vow Renewal”

Princess Cruises is known for its legacy of romance and a co-starring role on the hit TV show “The Love Boat,” set the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the largest multi-location vow renewal after 1,443 couples reaffirmed their love for one another during simultaneous ceremonies onboard three ships.

Princess Cruises Sets World Record

The record-breaking mass renewal of vows ceremonies took place on the top decks of Regal Princess, Royal Princess, and Crown Princess, on February 11, 2020, with three official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS Adjudicators on each ship to verify the record. The previous record was 1,201 couples, set in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

“A record-setting accomplishment has to be measurable, verifiable and have a single superlative,” explained Michael Empric, GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS Adjudicator onboard Regal Princess. “It’s always exciting being a part of a new official record, especially when it’s aboard ‘The Love Boat.’ You could feel the excitement and love in the air from all of the couples participating in this monumental moment with Princess.”

Celebrity officiants onboard Regal Princess sailing in the Caribbean included Gavin MacLeod, who portrayed the endearing Captain Stubing on “The Love Boat” with his television daughter, Jill Whelan, who played Vicki, serving as matron of honor. For those couples sailing onboard Royal Princess to Cabo San Lucas and Crown Princess, also in the Caribbean, the Captains of each ship officiated the ceremony.

“For more than 20 years, Princess has hosted renewal of vows ceremonies, helping thousands of couples reconnect and celebrate their love for one another,” said Gavin MacLeod, Princess Cruises ambassador. “This is the first time we attempted to break a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title so this particular milestone is extra special and it’s been amazing to hear from the guests who booked this cruise especially to become a part of history with Princess Cruises.”

Romantic Fun Facts

The cruise line surveyed participating couples, representing nine countries, and discovered the following romantic fun facts:

Celebrity Apex Completes Successful First Sea Trial

Celebrity Apex
Celebrity Apex returned to the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France, over the weekend following a very successful first sea trial.

Celebrity Apex has returned to the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France, over the weekend following a very successful first sea trial. As anticipated, the Celebrity Cruises ship followed in the footsteps of its Edge Series sister ship, the award-winning Celebrity Edge, far surpassing performance expectations.

Celebrity Apex Completes Sea Trial

The trial, conducted between February 4 – 8, 2020, in the Bay of Biscay near the shipyard, was overseen by more than 50 crew members, including engineers and nautical experts. Despite the optimal trial conditions, including strong winds and waves, the second-in-series ship showcased a superior level of comfort and fuel efficiency thanks to the revolutionary design of the Parabolic Ultrabow.

“The purpose of a sea trial is to test the functionality of the ship, but this wasn’t just any sea trial – and Celebrity Apex isn’t just any ship,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO, Celebrity Cruises. “In typical Edge Series-fashion, the ship absolutely exceeded our expectations, performing perfectly in line with our above-and-beyond operating standards.”

“It was an absolute honor to stand at the helm of Celebrity Apex for her highly successful first sea trial,” said Celebrity Apex Captain Dimitris Kafetzis. “Celebrity Apex is truly a beautiful and highly advanced vessel.”

Celebrity Apex by Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity Apex will begin its inaugural season in April 2020 with a mini-season of five sailings to Northern Europe destinations and then spend the summer sailing seven-to-12-night itineraries in the Mediterranean. In November, Celebrity Apex will reposition to Fort Lauderdale for a winter season of week-long Caribbean sailings.

Second Edge Series Ship

Celebrity Apex encores the transformational look and feel of the line’s first Edge Series ship, Celebrity Edge, with such distinctive features as the floating Magic Carpet cantilevered off the ship’s side inviting guests to eat, drink and soar up to 16 decks above the sea; the all-exclusive experience for all suite guests in The Retreat; dramatically expanded staterooms with Infinite Verandas; soothing indoor and outdoor garden escapes; magnificent two-story Edge Villas with their own private terrace and plunge pool; and high-style spaces throughout public areas, keeping focus on the contemporary design elements that are a highlight of the Edge Series of ships.

It then adds new culinary, spa and wellness, and entertainment features and experiences guaranteed to make Celebrity Apex the industry’s “it” shipCelebrity Apex will also debut new, all-inclusive amenities and pre-cruise concierge services in The Retreat for all suite guests.

Costa Cruises’ Begins Hull Assembly Work On Costa Toscana

Costa Toscana Hull Assembly
Costa Toscana Hull Assembly

Assembly work has started at the Meyer shipyard in Turku on the hull of Costa Toscana, the second ship in the Costa Cruises fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas, the “cleanest” fossil fuel in the world.

Costa Toscana is the sister ship of Costa Smeralda, which came into service on December 21. Thanks to the use of liquefied natural gas, an innovation that the Costa Group was the first to introduce in the cruise sector, this new class of low environmental impact ships can virtually eliminate sulfur dioxide emissions (zero emissions) and particulate matter (95-100% reduction), also significantly reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides (85% direct reduction) and CO2 (reduction of up to 20%). Costa Toscana and Costa Smeralda are part of an expansion plan that includes a total of seven new ships being delivered to the Costa Group by 2023, for a total investment of over six billion euros. As many as five of these ships are fueled by LNG.

The mayor of Turku, Minna Arve, was chosen as the godmother of the event.

The start of hull assembly work on Costa Toscana was celebrated with a ceremony involving the top management of Costa Cruises and the Meyer Turku shipyard. The mayor of Turku, Minna Arve, was chosen as the godmother of the event. According to naval tradition, during the ceremony, a number of commemorative coins were placed on the keel of the ship as a symbol of good wishes for members of the crew, passengers and future journeys. Over the next few weeks, the ship will begin to take shape in the shipyard’s dry dock, where a large section of the hull has already been positioned. This measures 100 meters and corresponds to the “floating engine room unit” (FERU), containing the ship’s engines.

Neil Palomba, President of Costa Cruises
Neil Palomba, President of Costa Cruises during the ceremony.

“This symbolic moment in the construction of Costa Toscana marks a further step forward in the use of LNG in the cruise sector. We were the first in the world to believe in this innovation five years ago, when we ordered these new ships, starting a transformation process toward make tourism increasingly sustainable” – said Neil Palomba, President of Costa Cruises. “LNG is currently the solution that allows the best and most immediate results to be achieved in terms of reducing the environmental impact of ships.”

“We are always building on the experiences from previous ships, but Costa Toscana will also have totally new design in many features to inspire the passengers. Today is the day when this all starts to become visible in the form of one beautiful ship” – said Jan Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku.

Powered By LNG

The use of LNG on cruise ships for the first time is an integral part of a bigger responsible innovation project promoted by the Costa Group to reduce the environmental impact of its fleet. Around 70% of the group’s ships currently in service are fitted with exhaust gas cleaning systems called Advanced Air Quality Systems, which guarantee the almost complete elimination of sulfur oxides, a 75% reduction in particulate and a substantial reduction in nitrogen oxides. The Costa Group is also a pioneer in the use of “shore power” – which allows ships to be powered with electricity from land while they are docked – and is making big investments to equip all its ships currently in service with this technology. The company is also trialing the use of lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells on some of its ships.

The inaugural cruise of Costa Toscana will leave Hamburg on June 28, 2021: 14 days with a final destination of Savona and a program that includes long calls of two days and one night in Lisbon, Barcelona, and Marseille, three of Europe’s most beautiful seaside cities. During summer 2021 and until the first week of November, Costa Toscana will offer one-week cruises to discover the culture, art, and beaches of the western Mediterranean, calling at Savona, Naples, Cagliari, Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona, and Marseille. From mid-November 2021 to Easter 2022 inclusive, the itinerary will still last one week but will change to visit two of the best-loved Italians cities of art: Savona, Marseilles, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Palermo, and Civitavecchia/Rome. Cruises on Costa Toscana are already available for booking online or through travel agents.

5 Things to Love About MSC Cruises’ New Private Island

MSC Cruises has charted a new course for private cruise destinations in the Bahamas.

Instead of following the long-established template of creating a resort-style playland with waterslides, swim-up bars, splash zones, and wave pools, the cruise line has designed its new Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve with an eye toward restoring and preserving the marine environment.

MSC Cruises’ New Private Island

MSC Cruises and a team of scientists and environmental engineers undertook the ambitious project over the course of three years. Ocean Cay, which sits just 65 miles from Miami and is located in the Bimini chain of the western Bahamas, opened to cruisers in December 2019.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, Panoramic View
Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, Panoramic View

Ocean Cay is a former sand excavation industrial site that operated for decades and had a detrimental effect on the marine environment. Coral and seagrass suffered greatly, and wildlife departed from the cay and the surrounding waters.

MSC and its partners got to work removing 1,500 tons of scrap metal, installing rock systems at the shoreline and planting 77,000 new plants and trees on the 95-acre island. With the cleanup and other improvements to get it ready for cruise visitors, the result is a rebirth as a new destination that travelers can enjoy while gaining a better understanding of the importance of marine conservation.

Cruise Addicts visited Ocean Cay during a cruise on MSC Divina and discovered five reasons to love MSC’s private island in the Bahamas.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, Lighthouse.
Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, Lighthouse.

Uncrowded and Idyllic Beauty

Ocean Cay offers unfettered beauty, with pristine sand and views of blue waters offshore at every turn. Miles of white-sand beaches include access to lagoons, bays and the Caribbean Sea. You can find uncrowded spaces to relax all over the island at the eight named beach areas. Bimini Beach is on the Caribbean Ocean; Seakers Family Cove offers a secluded retreat; Sunset Beach and Lighthouse Bay are great for swimming, and Aurea Paradise Sands is a great spot to get a massage treatment while enjoying ocean views.

Loungers are available, but umbrellas come with a rental fee. Cabanas also are available to reserve for the day.

It’s Also a Marine Research Center

This is not a showy amusement park-style cruise destination. No zip lines. No waterparks. And no swimming pools.

Instead, it’s a place of relaxation, recreation – and research.

MSC is building a Conservation Center on the island, which will serve as an active base for coral education and research. Scientists and students from colleges and universities in Florida and around the world will work at Ocean Cay, and visitors will be able to interact with these passionate conservationists and learn about the wildlife and ongoing restoration and research projects.

MSC Cruises says that the unspoiled beauty of the ocean and beaches is at the heart of the Ocean Cay experience, and the eco-friendly and sustainable practices on the island as well as designating the surrounding waters as a flourishing marine reserve are built around a commitment to protect the destination.

You Can Play in Blue Waters

Stunning blue waters envelop Ocean Cay, making for ideal places to cool off with a swim or laze about on a floating mat. Active pursuits include snorkeling, kayaking or standup paddleboarding. Equipment is available for rent.

Rays, tropical fish and even sharks can be seen in the waters around the marine reserve, a protected area in the ocean that covers 64 square miles around the island. It is expected that more wildlife (fish and birds) will appear as the seagrasses continue to improve and the palm trees and other foliage grows.

A boat ride to a shipwreck for snorkeling is a popular excursion. Certified divers can also book a scuba experience at Ocean Cay. Jet skis are also available to rent to tour the waters around the island.

A food truck at the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve
Several Beach Shack food trucks are also placed throughout Ocean Cay, serving up burgers, hot dogs, salads and pizza.

Shopping, Dining, and Drinking

Ocean Cay Village greets cruisers as soon as they step off the ship at the pier and stroll onto the island.

The Bahamian village offers shops and boutiques where you can buy souvenirs and other items. Springers Bar is the main bar, located just past the welcome center. You can also find beach bars set up close to the waterfront areas.

You’ll enjoy indulging at the nearby café and The Smiling Fish gourmet ice cream shop.

Seakers Buffet is a large facility with tables in the shade. You can find traditional American barbecue favorites and a range of Bahamian cuisine. Several Beach Shack food trucks are also placed throughout Ocean Cay, serving up burgers, hot dogs, salads and pizza.

Lighthouse light show at the Ocean Cay Marine
MSC ships stay late into the night at Ocean Cay, and the line offers a lively traditional Junkanoo Parade with music and dancing that ends up at the beach for a Lighthouse light show. The tower lights up the night with a dazzling light-and-song display.

The Lighthouse Show and Junkanoo Parade

The variety of daily activities includes things like kite flying, yoga, and water aerobics sessions. The iconic feature on the island is the Lighthouse, which offers an excursion to climb up the 165 steps and 115 feet for the best views over Ocean Cay. Drinks and bay views are available at the Lighthouse Bar, which features a large deck space.

MSC ships stay late into the night at Ocean Cay, and the line offers a lively traditional Junkanoo Parade with music and dancing that ends up at the beach for a Lighthouse light show. The tower lights up the night with a dazzling light-and-song display.

The party lasts for a few hours, as a DJ plays music and passengers line dance and sit around fire pits on comfy bean bag chairs on the beach.

Yes, this private beach from MSC Cruises definitely has a special kind of feel.

The line’s four North America-based ships – MSC Armonia, MSC Divina, MSC Meraviglia and MSC Seaside, make stops at Ocean Cay on different days each week.

Why You Should Immediately Book A Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort Day Pass

Resort Day Pass
Resort Day Pass

This all started when we learned our cruise would stop in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We have visited here several times before and have done many of the traditional tours and excursions. For this cruise, I wanted to find something unique and special.

Courtyard Isla Verde Beach Resort Day Pass

As our sailing date approached, I looked at all the options for San Juan and the surrounding area. During my search, I stumbled on a brand new offering that was not too far from the port.

It was at the Courtyard Isla Verde Beach Resort. The resort was only about 15 minutes away from the cruise terminal via a taxi and looked to offer everything my family and I were looking for in a resort day pass.

How To Book Your Day Pass

Unfortunately, We have been notified the Day Pass program is no longer available until further notice. (9/13/22)

What Does It Cost?

The resort’s Day pass costs $75.00+tax and includes two adults and up to three kids under twelve years of age. If your family or group ages differ, the resort will give you an updated price based on the ages you provide them.

On the day you arrive at the hotel, you will check-in at the hotel’s front desk. During check-in, they will give you wristbands, two free drinks coupons, and instructions on what it is included with your day pass.

If you have customized your day pass with any add-ons, they will also go over your scheduled excursions (Jet Ski’s, Banana Boat Rides, etc).

What’s Included:

  • One self-parking
  • Two welcome drinks
  • Access to the pool and beach
  • Towels, beach chairs and umbrellas
  • Gym key with access to baths and lockers
  • Optional excursions (Jet Ski’s, Banana Boat rides, etc) available to book

What’s Not Included:

  • Accommodations
  • Motorized sports
  • Personal Items
  • Jet Ski Tours
  • Meals or Snacks

TIP: We used the taxi cab station at the end of the pier and made our way directly to the resort. Be sure to come as early as you can to enjoy the resort as much as possible. The front desk can call you a cab when you are ready to return to the ship.

Give yourself extra time when returning to the ship, because of traffic jams or other issues so you are NOT late getting back to the ship.

How To Get There?

Isla Verde (Spanish for Green Isle or Green Island) is an area located next to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport and just outside the eastern border of San Juan and only a short 15-minute cab ride from the San Juan cruise terminal. If you’re looking for added convenience and flexibility to explore beyond the port, consider renting a car on Rental24h.com for a seamless journey to the Courtyard Isla Verde Beach Resort.

As we pulled into the driveway of the hotel and were greeted we were immediately impressed. It excited our family to try something new and unique on our visit to Puerto Rico.

Our Experience

After a brief check-in at the front desk, they gave us a quick tour of the lobby and escorted us to the pool area and showed us how to access the gym. The gym is where we could get changed, or use the bathrooms.

We picked up our towels and sat down to enjoy all the beauty this resort offered. Our first impressions, it is exquisite and peaceful. We arrived early so no other guests were at the pool yet and it was very serene with its tropical foliage, swim-up bar, and the beautiful beach only steps away.

During our stay, everyone was accommodating and friendly. We found the hotel grounds clean and inviting as we explored. We found some comfortable chairs under some umbrellas right by the pools steps.

TIP: The hotel has many amenities such as a coffee bar, several restaurants, a casino and much more. So be sure to enjoy everything the hotel has to offer. Just be sure you are properly dressed when entering the respected areas.

Why You Should Immediately Book A Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort Day Pass | 25
We pre-arranged an optional Jet Ski Excursion for our family and the whole family loved it. Just one of many options when booking your Courtyard Isla Verde Beach Resort Day Pass.

A Jet Ski Adventure

We had pre-arranged for an optional Jet Ski tour and they let us know what time the tour would begin. Before long the time had arrived, and we walked over to the beach to take a short boat ride over to a nearby cove where it was calm enough to ride Jet Skis.

The ride over was beautiful, and it was a great chance to experience another part of Puerto Rico. After a brief sign-in, we were soon aboard Jet Skis riding along the coastline. My wife and I both love Jet Skiing and have not ridden together since our honeymoon cruise back in 2005 at St. Thomas, USVI. So this was a real treat to us both, especially sharing this with our two girls.

Cruise Compete

It’s not every day you get to have the wind and sea spray in your face as you race along the coastline of such a beautiful place. It was choppy out this day but we all enjoyed ourselves very much. Once our time had expired, we took a boat ride back to the hotel, jumped into the water and walked ashore.

The whole experience made our day extra special. The tour guides were wonderful and very caring to my whole family. We all really enjoyed the experience and we hope to do it again someday.

Back On Shore

As we walked from the beach to our pool lounge chairs, we noticed it was getting close to the Lunchtime reservations we made at the hotel’s restaurant. We soon dried off, cleaned up and made our way to the Sirena Restaurant for lunch. Our table had a beautiful view that overlooked the ocean.

Mojito
My Mojito and beautiful view from Sirena Restaurant, Courtyard Isla Verde Beach Resort.

It was time to order our complimentary drinks. Since we were in Puerto Rico, I had to order a Mojito! It was honestly one of the best I have ever had.

We ordered an assortment of items so we could sample the many options available on the Lunch Menu. We ordered everything from soup, pizza, crab cakes, and even a burger. Everything was prepared perfectly and tasted wonderful.

We felt the beachfront ambiance along with the great food and drinks at the Courtyard Isla Verde Resort were so good, this would be reason enough to plan a trip here. It doesn’t get much better when you have such a beautiful ocean view, a great drink in hand and family by your side.

The whole experience at the Courtyard Isla Verde Beach Resort was remarkable. The hospitality and the quality of everything was second to none. We left feeling we have found a hidden gem ready to be  discovered by anyone visiting San Juan.

Why You Should Immediately Book A Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort Day Pass | 25

Before long we had to leave and make sure we got back to the ship on time. Our previous cab driver gave me his number, so I called him up and he came back and picked us up.

On the drive back to the cruise terminal, we talked about all things Puerto Rico. We thanked our driver and wished him well as we said goodbye. The day was an overall wonderful experience we won’t soon forget.

If you book this Day Pass please let us know about your experience, by sharing your comments and photos below. We would love to hear from you.

UnCruise Adventures Develops New Expedition Cruises in Belize and Guatemala

UnCruise Adventures, a leader in small-ship expedition cruising, is expanding its itineraries and adding voyages that visit the Central American countries of Belize and Guatemala in late 2020.

Long the leader in Alaska, UnCruise has been building new trips to give more options to the cruise line’s return passengers. Indeed, UnCruise has built a cult-like following over the past two decades by offering truly unique adventures in destinations like Alaska, Hawaii, Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico and the Pacific Northwest.

Cruisers who take one of these voyages overwhelmingly return for more. Now, they can venture to vibrant and historic places in Belize and Guatemala, two underexplored gems of the Caribbean.

To get a look at how UnCruise is developing this new route, Cruise Addicts joined CEO and owner Dan Blanchard along with other crew members for exclusive access to a research trip. The expedition sailings will take place on the 70-passenger Safari Voyager, and cruisers will find an immersive experience that features a delightful mix of time on the water and on land to get a great look at the history, culture and natural wonders of this part of Central America.

Capt. Andrea Kosto of the Safari Voyager and UnCruise CEO Dan Blanchard
Capt. Andrea Kosto of the Safari Voyager and UnCruise CEO Dan Blanchard found several amazing spots to bring their guests.

Belize and Guatemala feature access to pristine waterways, along the Caribbean Sea and into the rivers, bays and lagoons that dot the coastline. Inland, you’ll find lush rainforest and dense mangroves. And throughout the region, the warm Maya and Garifuna peoples proudly share their cultures.

So, with so much to offer, Blanchard and crew set out to design a trip that offers a one-of-a-kind experience to its guests. A voyage that provides all the hallmarks of an UnCruise expedition: crowd-free, immersive, intimate and unforgettable.

“I think the secret to any destination … is the unnamed places, the places where people don’t go,” Blanchard says. “Places off the beaten path that have value, and that’s the truth in Belize.”

The small cayes of Belize
The small cayes of Belize offer a scenic backdrop for the stunning sunrises.

This was the second “research and development” trip for Blanchard, who skippered the six of us around on a double-hulled catamaran to “prove the route” over the course of a week-plus of sailing. Safari Voyager captain Andrea Kosto has been in charge of creating the new itinerary, and our trip served as one of the final phases to give the voyage (sailings will be a week-long roundtrip from Belize City) a true test to see how the timing works out, what the best activities will be and whether the waters are deep enough for the ship to safely pass.

After a week of sailing with this energetic crew — which also included expedition leaders Erika Hernandez Calvo and Katherine Mena and hotel manager Tim Karl – I got a good idea about what passengers can expect when Safari Voyager hits the region for six scheduled departures beginning in October 2020. UnCruise Adventures Develops New Expedition Cruises in Belize and Guatemala  | 25

Land and Sea

The world’s second-largest coral reef, the Mesoamerican Reef, stretches along Belize’s coastline. The warm Caribbean waters and the Belize Reef system offer an aquarium for cruisers to get in and play. Snorkeling, skiff tours, paddleboarding and swimming will be prime activities on this cruise

The waters are also filled with hundreds of tiny islands. In Belize, they are called cayes, and you will visit several of them on this expedition. The offer the chance for beach days, barbecues and sunset cocktail hours ashore. We visited Ranguana Caye, Laughing Bird Caye, Lime Caye and Carrie Bow Caye (a Smithsonian marine research station) to snorkel and swim and watch seabirds, hermit crab colonies and nesting turtle sites.

These small cayes are the picture of an idyllic paradise.

There are plenty of land adventures, too, with hikes in the rainforest at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and on savanna land at Payne’s Creek in Belize. Rich mangrove areas thrive in both Guatemala and Belize, and you’ll have the chance to spot manatees, gray foxes and yellow-headed parrots (among dozens of other birds).

My favorite day of the trip included a hard hike at Cockscomb Basin that ended at a racing waterfall, where we jumped in for a refreshing swim.

The itinerary includes time in towns, too, with chances to shop at the produce market in Punta Gorda, Belize, and venture around the vibrant seaside town of Livingston, Guatemala.

Cultural Immersion

The indigenous people of the region are the Maya and Garifuna, and UnCruise will offer interactions and experiences that tell the story and show the daily life of these residents whose history and lifestyles provide the diverse tapestry that is on display in Belize. Get ready to try your hand at crafting tortillas from scratch, using the traditional old tools.

You’ll visit ancient Maya ruins sites, some excavated just decades ago, as well as venture into villages along the Rio Dulce River in Guatemala to see how Maya women are carving out their places in modern society, developing small baking businesses and running community health clinics.

The Heat is On

The weather is ideal for enjoying the waters year-round. OK, it’s really quite hot, which makes the water all the more inviting. Sunrise is around 5:30, with sunset 12 hours or so later, and the heat of the day is intense, so expect a schedule that gets you up early to get out during the ideal time to see the birds and other wildlife when they are most active.

Cruise Compete

Then, time back on the ship to rest and relax before going out for more excursions in late afternoon. The sunrises and sunsets are incredible, by the way. We also had several times when dolphins joined alongside the boat to swim in our wake. At night, we set out lights while at anchor and were able to witness fish feeding frenzies just over the side of the ship. The fish on display included sharks and rays who were drawn to the massing plankton.

You’ll definitely need to pack a rash guard and plenty of good reef-safe sunscreen to protect against sunburn. A strong insect repellent and hiking pants are also a good option for when you head into the jungle areas.

Sales are Brisk

With more than a year to go before the first sailing, UnCruise reported that about half the slots already had been sold on the Safari Voyager for this new trip. Belize and Guatemala are exotic and adventurous destinations, and UnCruise is really locking in a special experience, but it looks like you’ll have to act fast if you want to get there in the next year.
