Tips and Tricks for Making the Most of Your Cruise to Alaska

Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau Alaska
Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau Alaska

Alaska ranks high on the travel wish list for many people because it’s such a wild and magical place. A cruise voyage is the best way to explore many of the most remote parts of the Last Frontier, because some of this destination’s best features are the natural elements and wild creatures that are associated with the miles and miles of marine regions.

But it’s a whole new game when it comes with prepping for and fully enjoying an Alaska cruise when compared with a sailing to the Caribbean and Mediterranean. So, with the start of the Alaska cruise season fast approaching and to help you make the most of your voyage, we’ve got a quick guide to help you along the way.

Regent Seven Seas Mariner pool deck
Regent Seven Seas Mariner offers an inclusive cruise experience. You also might like a smaller expedition ship that offers more adventure.

Small Ship vs. Big Ship

Consider a smaller expedition-style cruise if you really want to get up close to nature and see places that the big ships can’t reach. Expedition lines can send their vessels deeper into fjords and into serene bays so you can go paddleboarding, kayaking and even snorkeling, as well as take you on educational zodiac tours. You’ll get incredibly close to glaciers and cliffs, and you might enjoy hiking and bushwhacking outings on small islands.

Also, make sure to get a cabin with a balcony. You can go without a balcony in most destinations, but you don’t want to be without one in Alaska. You’ll love being able to walk out to spot whales, dolphins, bobbing ice bergs, soaring eagles and many other natural wonders. The scenery is the highlight of the cruise, and you want to have every possible chance to enjoy it.

Be sure to get a cabin with a balcony. You want to be able to see all you can and capture it with your camera at a moment’s notice.

Photography Tips

Your camera will be your best friend on an Alaska cruise, so you want to have at least a halfway decent piece of equipment and know how to use it a bit. Take a few photography classes or do some research on YouTube for photography basics so you can be ready to take some epic wildlife and landscape photos.

Plus, offload your pictures every night onto your laptop or an external hard drive. This way, you have your shots backed up in case something happens to your camera or your memory card gets damaged. Bring extra batteries and SD memory cards for your cameras, as well. You also might want a tripod to stabilize for any time-lapse or long-distance shots you will try.

Pack layers to wear because weather conditions vary greatly. Plus, be ready for rainy conditions on your Alaska cruise.

Packing

Make sure to bring extra layers to account for the volatility in the weather in Alaska. You need layers to add or subtract as the sun comes up or retreats behind clouds. You also will warm up if you go ashore to hike or bike. You’ll need rain gear and good boots for hiking in wet conditions. Other necessary items: insect repellent, sun screen binoculars and a small day backpack to carry your stuff around during your time ashore.

Pick Your Season

The Alaska cruise season runs roughly from May to September, and you will experience varying conditions and see different things depending on when you choose to take a voyage on the Inside Passage in Southeast Alaska.

May has cool temps and longer days (15 hours of daylight), meaning the weather can be rainy but typically is fairly pleasant and great for whale watching and spotting animals that are awakening from their winter slumbers. You could witness a lot of bear activity — such as feeding along the banks of rivers or in streams.

Temps warm a bit in June, and July is the hottest month (averages in the 60s). By August and September, days begin to grow shorter, colder and rainier again. The end of June and early July are wonderful times to visit Ketchikan if you are interested in watching the salmon run through town – or even tossing in a line to catch a few yourself.

Biking in Skagway Alaska.
Research and book your favorite shore excursion choices as soon as possible. We had a fun time on a bike ride in Skagway.

Excursions

The region where you cruise is vast and offers a lot to do, but the best Alaska shore excursions sell out quickly. So, it’s wise to do your research and planning and book early so you don’t miss out on something you really want to try.

Check what your cruise ship is offering on these sailings that go to Juneau, Sitka, Skagway, Ketchikan, Haines and Icy Strait Point. You can also look into booking a shore excursion independently. You might get a more intimate experience among a smaller group and pay a lower price, but you need to make sure your guides get you back to the ship on time before it departs the port.

Some of the best things to experience in Alaska include whale watching boat tours, fresh-caught salmon bakes, cultural interactions with the Tlingit native people of Alaska, wilderness hikes, kayaking, snorkeling, canoe paddling on Mendenhall Lake in Juneau, bear-sighting walks, glacier treks with ice climbing, helicopter “flight-seeing”, dogsledding and city tours.

Viking Cruises Chart A Course For Future Growth

Viking Cruises was founded a little over 22 years ago. At the helm of Viking is Chairman Torstein Hagen. He oversees the river and ocean cruise product lines. A Norway native, he has extensive experience in the shipping and cruise industries. He is the former CEO of Royal Viking Line from 1980 to 1984, a respected line of its time. I recently had a chance to sit down with him and fellow journalists in Basel, Switzerland for a press conference before the naming of Seven new River Ships. This was the second time I had the honor to hear him personally speak about his product.

One thing I enjoy most is Chairman Hagen’s no nonsense approach. He knows what he wants to offer his guests and what he doesn’t. His vision is very clear. He offers his guests a great value for a what many people consider a luxury product. His passion to use clean Scandinavian designs on his river and ocean vessels helps set his brand apart. All the Viking Longships on the river and Viking Ocean vessels share almost identical designs. He explained this in a previous press conference. He stated the initial costs of designing a new ship and its interior are immense. Why would he need to redo this regularly if the first design was done right? Further, by not spending huge amounts they could offer a great cruise at a much better value than their competition. Other cruise lines completely redesign ships from top to bottom every few ships. Viking keeps almost everything the same. From the carpet, light fixtures and chairs. If something needs to be replaced, they don’t have to special order it. This is a bold move but, with a 98% guest satisfaction rate and loyal customers it is working for Viking.

The Chairman’s passion for simplicity continues to even the smallest things. Such as not having tubs in most of his staterooms. He explained that the tub takes up a lot of space. It can also be dangerous for older travelers. So by removing this it makes it safer and offers the guests more cabin space aboard their ships. Further, He designed the television remote controls to be simple and easy to use. As a passionate traveler himself he has his hand on every facet of the Viking Difference. Some of these things are:

  • Good water pressure in the showers
  • Easy to use TV remote and other items
  • Easy to read Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Soap containers
  • No-Nickel & Diming or “Fleecing” the Guests
  • Attention to detail in all areas

These may sound trivial at first but, when they become frustrations to you or a guest, they can be key to a good or bad experience. Though the river and ocean products do vary in what they offer. Here is a list of what Viking does NOT do:

  • No Casinos
  • No children under 18
  • No Umbrella dinks
  • No Photographers
  • No art auctions
  • No formal nights
  • No smoking
  • No charge for beer or wine at lunch & dinner
  • No charge for Wi-Fi
  • No charge for the launderette
  • No entrance fee to the spa
  • No sales pressure in the spa
  • No inside rooms
  • No butlers
  • No white gloves
  • No charge for alternate restaurants

Viking River Growth

Viking plans to continue to grow at a rapid pace. They have plans for seven new river ships in 2020. This would bring their current 72 up to a staggering 79. The new ships on order are the Viking Gersemi and Viking Hervor and will sail on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers. They will also be building Viking Fjorgyn, Viking Kari, Viking Radgrid and Viking Skaga which are dubbed ‘Baby Longships’ and specifically designed for Seine river cruising. Lastly, Viking Osiris will also be another Baby Longship and will sail along the Nile river. It will also mark the first Western company to own and operate an entirely new built ship on the Nile river. Some river cruise operators lease their river ships. Viking owns and operates the world’s largest fleet of vessels. This allows them to be nimble and make adjustments during low or high water level events. Since the vessels are identical, the guest experience is not affected. This allows them to offer a consistent level of service, increased efficiency and an overall better guest experience.

Oceans & Beyond

Viking is not resting on its success with their ocean cruises. With six current ocean ships, they currently have six more under construction. As many of you know, Viking has talked about offering cruises in the United States along the Mississippi River. Viking first announced plans to offer river cruises along the Mississippi in 2015. This on-again off-again plan has re-emerged with cities along the river announcing they have reached agreements to host Viking ships. The un-released images of the proposed five-story ships have been described as “a long ship on steroids” could carry up to 400 passengers. Chairman Hagen was asked about progress of offering Mississippi cruises? He joked he hoped to start “before the start of Mardi Gras”. We just don’t know what year that will be. Things appear to be moving in the right direction on all fronts and we will bring you more news as formal announcements are made.

Expedition Cruising

Viking has not officially released any information on their expedition cruise ships but, news broke last July that they had signed a Letter Of Intent to order two ice-class expedition cruise ships from Norway’s Vard with an option to order two more. You may recall Vard also delivered Ponant’s Le Lapérouse with her maiden voyage in June 2018. During our press conference Hagen did make the first public acknowledgement of plans to enter the expedition cruise market. He said the ships will be small, but larger than current expedition ships to provide more comfort for guests. So it is safe to say, when Viking says they will allow their guests to “Explore the World In Comfort” they mean it.

Cruise Compete

Viking is on a trajectory to become one of the largest small ship ocean cruise lines in the world and will continue to be the biggest line in the river cruise business. For those watching Viking grow, it is exciting. We look forward to sharing it’s evolution with you.

Tips to Keep in Mind Before Your First Cruise

MSC Seaside, Zip line
The Zip Line aboard MSC Seaside comes with an extra cost.

There are vacations, and then there are cruise ship vacations. For non-cruisers, the idea of
floating around in the middle of the sea might seem daunting or even dull, but everyone else
knows that a cruise vacation is like nothing else. Imagine a resort brimming with countless
activities at your disposal, culinary delights that never end, and a melange of performances
that take place 24X7 without stopping.

Just like a cruise is like no other vacation you have ever been on, preparing for it requires a
few additional thoughts and a bit of extra planning. You can start with the ultimate packing
list for a conventional vacation, and then include the following few items in it. The main point
is to remember that a cruise vacation is unique. Think of it as multiple day trips rolled into
one, in addition to the fact that you stay in one place, and also get the benefit of enjoying a
steady flow of food, top class service, and entertainment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_z9I1N0FUk&t=45s

Portable Wi-Fi is Bae

Believe it or not, but the most important and desired commodity on a cruise ship is internet
connectivity. Due to the nature of the vacation, Wi-Fi is extremely costly on a boat. Most
passengers thus spend hours at ports in search of a good, free signal, often missing out the main reason they are on a cruise, to see the world. So, whether you want to send some
critical business emails, use one of your mobile travel apps that require connectivity, or
continue playing slots on your online casino, you will actually save money and time by
buying a portable internet connection for your trip. Some mobile companies also offer
discounted plans, and it is worth checking with them before you leave.

Keep Your Casino Handy

Passengers that come from countries like Canada, where online gaming is legal and
flourishing, will realise that gambling on a cruise ship can prove to be quite problematic at
times. Some ships have casinos, but with the family tagging along and long tiring days
sightseeing, it becomes difficult to be physically present there all the time. That’s when
having an online casino app comes in handy. It’s vital that before leaving for the cruise, you
go through the reviews of all the best online casinos and pick your favourite. Canadians
should particularly pay attention to online Canadian casino offers to grab some welcome
bonuses and promotions which can go up to a whopping $2200. Moreover, make sure that
the casino you pick has a mobile-friendly website or an app so that you can play the games
of your choice at any time and from anywhere.

Dress to Impress

There are two parts to a cruising lifestyle. Daytime is typically relaxed with people in
comfortable clothes taking in the many attractions of the ship. If you are a multitasker, you
can enjoy a juicy burger, take in the rays, play some online slots, and breathe in the fresh
cool breeze from the sea while sipping on a chilled margarita. The nights though are more
formal where most regular cruise-goers like to dress up. It is essential that even if you plan
to not participate in any of the official events, that you at least have one formal dress for either the Captain’s Dinner or to eat at one of the fancy restaurants that are found on most ships as they typically have a dress code.

Don’t Be Late

A few minutes can turn a perfect holiday into a nightmare. Many first timers are under the
impression that a ship won’t leave them behind. On the contrary, cruise ships are on a tight
schedule and will not wait for latecomers. If you venture out on land on your own and are not
back in time, be very sure your boat will be long gone.

Work on the new terminals is due to commence in early 2020. MSC Cruises currently estimates that the work will be completed by late 2022, at which time the Company will transfer all its PortMiami operations to the new Terminal.
