A Case For Pre- or Post-Cruise Hotel Stays

We live in Florida now, where sailing means a drive to the port rather than flying in as we did when living in Kansas. Back then, coming in to the embarkation city made sense, as there were logical reasons to do so. We would commonly choose a hotel that offered a special package for cruise travelers; a discounted rate and transfer to the cruise port, maybe breakfast so we would not starve waiting to board. All good stuff. But a recent reader question prompted me to think a bit deeper on the topic and take another look at pre- and post-cruise hotel stays.

“Why always with the cheap hotels before sailing Chris ?,” writes Sadie L from Boca Raton, Florida. “You have a lovely cruise ship booked for a nice vacation and you start it off in some fleabag hotel? Why not make it something special? Can it really cost all that much more?”

Good points all Sadie, thanks for writing! Let’s take a quick look at what we know about pre- and post-cruise hotel properties, reasons to come early or linger later before or after sailing and how to go about finding a hotel that will work for you.

Cheap Insurance, Assurance

Coming to the embarkation city a day early helps insure that you’ll be at the port, ready to board on embarkation day. Assuming it takes a flight to get to the area of the embarkation port, adding a day on can account for a whole lot of flight delays and give airlines time to find lost luggage before boarding the ship.

Bonus Tip: Always plan backup flights in case yours is delayed or canceled. Carry with you a list of the next three flights after the one you have booked, just in case you might have to switch. Better yet, get one of a number of smartphone apps that will manage that information for you, updating your travel plans as they unfold. TripIt it is a good one as is FlightTracker Pro.

Great Excuse To Start Vacation Early

While #1 above was based on logical reasons to spend travel funds on a pre-cruise hotel stay, this one is just a greedy way to get more time on vacation. If it is important to justify the optional expense, say you’re doing it as a safety buffer in case flights are delayed. Sing that song louder in the winter, when bad weather far away can cascade throughout the nation, delaying flights in areas not even close to snow, sleet or ice.

Not that you need an excuse; starting and/or ending a short cruise with hotel stays as bookends is a great way to decompress from real life before and serves as a nice buffer after, before returning to your regular routine.

A Hotel That Is A Good Fit

Budget, Luxury and every desire in-between are available options for most all cruise ports. That may mean staying closer to the airport than the cruise port in Orlando but so close to the port that you can see your ship come in on the morning of embarkation is a viable option in Fort Lauderdale or Miami. A little research is required but that’s another great part of the planning process.

Cruise travelers who do pre- or post-cruise hotels on a regular basis often add them later, if schedule and budget permit. That’s what we did when we lived in the Midwest. Try to book flights with plenty of time in the schedule. If connecting flights are needed, allow plenty of time between flights, at least an hour domestically or 2 hours for international flights.

A good pre- or post- cruise hotel is not always the one that advertises specific ‘cruise’ packages either. Any hotel will do, as we found out helping to plan a sailing from Port Canaveral in Florida.

The Plan In Action

We recently tested the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Orlando as an option for cruise travelers sailing from Port Canaveral, on Florida’s East coast. The idea here would be to rent a car at the Orlando airport, drive to the hotel and anything else of interest in the area, spend the night or a few nights then drive to Cocoa Beach where the rental car company has an office to drop off the car. In most scenarios, the price of renting a small car was less than what cruise lines charge for transfer in a big bus.

Many cruise travelers find that the price of an inexpensive hotel is made up by the less expensive flights available a day or two before or after sailing. Booking a 7-day cruise though, that works for those with plenty of time to spare but not everyone. Those with 7 days total to travel might try a shorter cruise, say a 5-day with a pre and post hotel stay added on. Regardless of what you choose: choose one. Coming in early or staying late after sailing will put your head in the right place and bring a better overall cruise travel experience. Try it; you’ll see!

Wave Season Is Coming: Are You Ready?

Officially January through March, ‘wave season’ is a time of the year when travelers plan and put down a deposit on a cruise vacation. Cruise lines often offer some of the best values they will have in the first six months of the year. Wave season is also when cold, harsh winter weather causes those in Northern climates to think about a warm-weather destination, if for no other reason that to give them something to look forward to. In preparation, here is the first in a series of what you need to know to sail through buying a cruise and come out with the best possible value .

Norwegian Prima

Wave Season

As sellers of travel, the cruise lines have not missed a beat, moving on with expansion plans with new ships, updated facilities, and onboard programsaimed to provide everything vacationers are looking for.

As buyers, we need to look beyond simply the lowest price and concentrate on what we get for that price. There are several ways to insure we get the best value like calculating the cost per person per night, surfing the websites of the cruise lines, subscribing to newsletters and blogs of competent travel sources or doing what you are right now; keeping up on the latest information.

One of the best ways to insure your best value is to work with a professional Travel Agent rather than an Internet Cruise Broker.

The difference is substantial and can make or break a vacation.

First, let’s start with the Internet Cruise Broker. That would be one of the many online companies that offers unbelievably low prices on a cruise. In most all cases those are unbelievable prices because they are not accurate or do not fully represent what is being offered.

Wave Season Is Coming
Watch For Hidden Fees (Photo by Karolina Grabowska on Pexels.com)

Watch For Hidden Fees

The first misleading expense is hidden fees. We call these Buried Fees because you have to dig to find them. They are there for all to see but you will find them most commonly in the fine print of the offer, far after the boring text left readers uninterested. Most all of these fees are not necessary and simply something that Internet Cruise Broker has levied upon each buyer, should they fall into the trap.

Watch For Hidden Fees

Making Changes Can Be Costly

One of the Internet Cruise Broker fees that can add up quickly are Change Fees where a buyer may be charged for any change made to the booking after deposit has been paid. Except for special discount pricing like Carnival Cruise Line‘s Early Saver Fare, cruise lines do not charge change fees. In the case of Carnival’s Early Saver Fare, buyers pay the lowest possible fare, guaranteed by the cruise line. In turn have restrictions they agree to up front to get that fare. Carnival’s Early Saver Fare and other line’s restricted or ‘flash’ fares are safe because the cruise line is very up-front about it and nothing is hidden.

Don’t Pay Extra For A Little Attention

If you do see a buried fee when researching a potential cruise online it should be a red flag to pay special attention to the details before buying. Processing Fees are another one that runs up the price of the cruise and is often charged by Internet Cruise Brokers. But if you can get past all the potential or actual junk fees charged the low price may still be a good one.

Reason enough to buy from your Internet Cruise Broker? Not really. One of the biggest areas where Internet Cruise Brokers fail is what happens after the sale.

How To Get The Best Cruise Bargain, Any Time Of The Year

Royal Caribbean International's Harmony of the Seas, the world"s largest and newest cruise ship, previews in Southampton. Pool Deck

There are a variety of sale events hosted by major cruise lines that often bring the opportunity for some of the best cruise deals available. On one hand, holiday sales, wave season, special discount events and promotions always seem to have something for everyone. On the other hand, it seems like there is always a cruise sale of some sort or another, much like there seems to always be a sale on cars, furniture and other products we buy from time to time. So how do we know when to buy? When are the really great deals and how do we get them?

Let’s take a look at some golden rules of cruise buying.

Unless It Is The Best Deal Ever, Be Wary Of Restrictions

The big trick to booking your best cruise value is to consider buying just the start of the deal. Keep looking for other promotions, discounts and offers that may come up between when deposit is made and final payment is due. Fares with strict qualifiers and non-refundable deposits may very well be the best deal available. But if there is a chance, even a slight chance, that some other deal may come up later that will benefit an existing booking, stay clear of fares that do not allow changes.

Still, Buying Far In Advance Is A Great Strategy

Undeniably, reserving a cruise vacation as far in advance as possible gives cruise travelers the best selection of cabins from which to choose too. If having a cabin located in a certain part of the ship is a priority, buy as far ahead as possible. Reserving that cabin with a non-restricted fare as noted above, gives buyers the maximum amount of flexibility should a good deal come up later.

Understand How It Works And Don’t Be Offended

Cruise lines commonly offer discounts for seniors, military members, residents of certain states and more. They do that to fill up the ships, discounting existing fares as an incentive to book now. As much as we would like to believe that cruise lines love our seniors, military members and residents of Ohio, that’s not why they offer reduced fares. Knowing that none of these or other discounts will be offered far in advance makes booking an unrestricted fare important so travelers can take advantage of it later.

Don’t Ask For Something You Don’t Qualify For

Asking for a senior discount if you are 37 is not just wrong it will no doubt cost you later. On embarkation, we have to prove our identity by producing the documents we registered with the cruise line in advance in order to get our boarding passes. We also have to prove that we qualify for any discounts given along the way. If we can’t prove our discount-worthiness, we stand a good chance of paying the difference in order to board the ship. No proof= no boarding.

Stick With Your Cruise Line And Reap The Rewards

Past-guest loyalty often translates to more than recognition on the ship, however popular benefits of that sort are. Being a high level past guest of any major cruise lines with many sailings under your belt often gets cash discounts, on-board credit and other dollars and cents discounts and promotions. Those deserve to be included in calculating the end deal we received on any cruise vacations.

Either Use A Travel Agent Or Have The Discipline To Do What They Do

I think this is the first time I have written anything other than “use a travel agent” and I have my reasons. Cruise travelers really into the whole process of booking, knowing all the deals and fare programs available and with a lot of time on their hands can probably substitute for a travel agent. There are probably one or two in a thousand cruise travelers who would qualify for this job. These people, the good ones, live and breathe cruise travel and often know of sales, discounts and promotions before they are released to the general public.

Good travel agents also keep up with bookings after the initial deposit is made, applying new discounts and promotions that booking qualifies for as they occur. If there is one best reason to use a travel agent, that’s probably it.

Don’t Get Too Hung Up On Pricing Though

It’s easy to get fixated on pricing to the point that we miss other important elements of getting ready for a cruise. Researching the destinations on any given itinerary, even if we have been there before, is a good idea to add real value to the actual experience. Packing, planning, preparing for that cruise, regardless of where it goes, what ships takes us there and how much it costs should take first place once the booking is made. That is, after-all, why we sail.

Carnival Cruise Line announced that renowned chef and restauranteur Emeril Lagasse will serve as its Chief Culinary Officer. A restaurant concept created by Lagasse, Emeril’s Bistro, is already popular on two of Carnival’s most innovative ships, Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, and Carnival also announced that Carnival Jubilee will feature an Emeril’s Bistro as well when it arrives in Galveston, Tex. in December 2023.

Carnival Cruise Line announced today that renowned chef and restauranteur Emeril Lagasse will serve as its Chief Culinary Officer. A restaurant concept created by Lagasse, Emeril’s Bistro, is already popular on two of Carnival’s most innovative ships, Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, and now the famous chef’s culinary talents will be utilized fleetwide. In conjunction with this announcement, Carnival also announced that Carnival Jubilee will also feature an Emeril’s Bistro when it arrives in Galveston, Tex. in December 2023. To see a video of Lagasse sharing the news, click here.

“Food is key to the fun of a Carnival cruise,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “Emeril’s restaurants on our two new ships have been a great addition to our dining offerings and guests rave about the food, which will also be on Carnival Jubilee come next December. With Emeril’s culinary expertise and broader profile on our ships, along with our wildly popular partnership with Food Network star Guy Fieri, Carnival will feature two iconic talents in the food and dining industry across our fleet.”

As Chief Culinary Officer, Lagasse will support Carnival’s skilled chefs with guidance on food trends and techniques as well as advise on future menu items and dining concepts. Guests will also see his input on the menus of main dining rooms fleetwide, including entrées designated as “Emeril recommends” picks.

“I’ve been creating and operating restaurants for many years but developing my restaurants with Carnival and learning about the cruise industry has been an exhilarating experience. I love Carnival’s focus on food and fun and the many great dining options they offer their guests. I’m looking forward to building on our success at sea with Carnival’s exceptional culinary team,” said Lagasse.

Lagasse is a James Beard Award winner, known for his mastery of Creole and Cajun cuisine and one of New Orleans’ most respected chefs. In addition to his acclaimed restaurants across the country, he has been welcomed into homes nationwide for decades through his popular cookbooks and television cooking shows, including his current show “Emeril Cooks,” which debuted on Roku earlier this year.

Carnival offers its guests outstanding choices in casual and fine dining, and the last several months have been filled with awards from Cruise Critic, Travel Weekly, The Points Guy, Good Housekeeping and Reader’s Digest that recognize the great value and dining options – many of which are fully inclusive with standard bookings. Fieri’s Guy’s Burgers is the first stop for many guests after they board their cruise, and his fleetwide offerings have been expanded to include Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse on newer ships joining the fleet.

Carnival Celebration

Carnival Cruise Line

To celebrate Lagasse’s new role, Duffy has invited him to join her in New York this weekend, where Carnival is sponsoring the countdown clock, and serving as a musical sponsor, for the famous Times Square ball drop. Carnival’s integration with the iconic New Year’s Eve Celebration in New York City will also serve as one of the first launching points of Carnival’s new “Choose Fun Together” marketing campaign. The new ads highlight those special moments of fun that can only happen when people come together on a Carnival cruise – because we are our most fun selves when we choose fun – together. In that spirit, Duffy and Lagasse will flip the switch on the New Year’s Eve countdown clock together.

The event also coincides with the cruise line’s line expansion of operations in New York City, with year-round departures from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal on board Carnival Venezia beginning in June.

6 Awesome Things To Love Aboard MSC Seascape

Pirates Cove Aqaupark aboard MSC Seascape

My first MSC Cruise was aboard the MSC Seaside back in 2019. My cruise aboard the ship that follows the Sun, did not disappoint. We traveled through the Caribbean on a family cruise. What could be better than a week of sun, fun and entertainment? Fast forward to the present and MSC Cruises’ has recently launched MSC Seascape, a big sister of MSC Seaside with more room and amenities onboard.

Awesome Things To Love Aboard MSC Seascape

I was aboard MSC Seascape for it’s naming ceremony on Dec 7th, in the heart of New York City. MSC Seascape becomes the 21st ship in the MSC Cruises fleet and the very first to be named in New York City. The ship is 169.400 gross tons and features 2,270 cabins with a guest capacity of 5.877. She features 12 different types of staterooms and suites; 11 dining venues and 19 bars and lounges; six swimming pools, including an aft infinity pool.

This visit gave me an up-close look as some of the amazing features and amenities guests can expect when taking a cruise aboard this beautiful new ship. I wanted to share six awesome things to love aboard MSC Seascape.

The beautiful Jungle Pool Lounge aboard MSC Cruises, MSC Seascape. (Photo by John Shallo/Cruise Addicts)

JUNGLE POOL LOUNGE

This stunning Jungle Pool was repeatedly mentioned as a favorite and features a retractable-roof that allows it to be used in all weather conditions. This expansive jungled themed space is a great place to relax by the pool and offers seating for 224. It is also conveniently located next to the Gelato and close to the waterpark. This would be great spot for a late night swim or dip in the hot tub. We have also noticed these areas are much quiter and more peaceful than other pool areas, so it can be a nice retreat when you need some tranquility.

PIRATES COVE AQUAPARK

The Pirates Cove Aquapark aboard MSC Seascape might be our favorite due to thoughtful design and perfect pirate theming. It features slides on both sides of the ship and a waterpark in the middle. This sheltered location makes it almost hidden and helps shelter kids from the harsh sun and wind while being on a cruise ship. You will find slides for all ages and levels of excitement. The big slides are the Dualing AquaTubes on one side and the Pool Sider AquaDream on the other. Each have their own height requirement’s of course but, don’t worry their is plenty of fun available for kids of all ages here.

Pro Tip: Pack a carry-on bathing suit and sun screen so your kids can get splashing once onboard, well before your staterooms are available (normally 1:30pm) later in the day.
ROBOTRON is a state-of-the-art robotic arm with an attached gondola

ROBOTRON

Want some thrills during your cruise? ROBOTRON is a state-of-the-art robotic arm with an attached gondola that seats three guests. You can be flying nearly 175 feet above the sea. This adrenaline-pumping experience allows riders to experience an unobstructed 360° view of the horizon as they hang over the edge of the deck, flip upside down and move in all directions.

The good news is, ROBOTRON riders are able to select their desired thrill level. During my visit I was able to watch as some riders clearly had chosen the high-intensity setting (screams included) and some older guests had chosen the family-friendly version. Riders can also set the mood with colored lights, music preferences and more.

MSC AUREA SPA & GYM

I’m not a big Gym or Spa person but, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the size and amenities offered aboard MSC Seascape. If you want to take a cycling class, use free weights, they have you covered with all the latest machines and techniques. Looking to be pampered with a Couples massage, treatment rooms. You can also get your hair or nails done in the salon. This Spa offer so much, let’s not forget the following:

  • Finnish Sauna & Soft Sauna
  • Mediterranean Bath & Steam Room
  • Snow Room
  • Blower Pool
  • Water Cave & Salt Room
  • Scrub Room
  • Vertical Kneipp

For Men they even have a dedicated old school Barber Shop. This is the place to get your self looking and feeling great while you are away on vacation. Passes are available and extra charges may apply.

KAITO TEPPANYAKI & SUSHI BAR

Kaito Teppanyaki and Sushi Bar are sure to be popular among guests. So don’t forget to make reservations in advance. The Kaito Sushi bar features a conveyor belt moves fresh sushi in front of guests, enabling them to select their favorite items. During my visit I was in heaven as I chose my dish and sampled super fresh Sushi. Just around the corner I was drawn in my the unmistakable sounds and sizzling of Kaito Teppanyaki. I was able to sample of some the fresh cooked steak and fried rice. So good!

Pro Tip: Consider book specialty restaurants on the first night of the cruise to get a table at the most popular restaurants as these times are often available.

BUTCHER’S CUT

During my time aboard MSC Seascape I was able to sample some of the food available at the Butcher’s Cut, an American-Style steakhouse. It reminded me how much I enjoyed eating here on her sister ship, MSC Seaside. The open kitchen is tastefully designed and pays tribute to perfectly aged steaks and culinary delight’s. They serve Linz Heritage Angus beef, the gold standard in high-end Angus beef, aged to perfection with the highest quality . The menu is inspired by the great plains and is accompanied by bold New World wines and modern cocktails. If you love great steaks and dining experience from start to finished you should make reservations here.

MSC Seascape is now sailing Easter and Western Caribbean cruises from PortMiami. Check out prices and cruises offered on the ship here.

Staying Healthy on the High Seas: How Cruise Ships Provide Medical Care

How Cruise Ships Provide Medical Care

In 2021, the number of ocean cruise passengers worldwide was around 4.8 million. Some cruises last a few days, but others can go on for weeks or months as these ships travel across oceans.

Looking at these statistics, it’s not hard to imagine a few passengers getting sick or injured onboard these vessels. Common health conditions at sea include seasickness, food poisoning, flu, and regional infections.

The environment inside some ships, including the materials used to construct these vessels, can also cause a health hazard.

For example, some older ships contain asbestos, heat-resistant insulation and fireproofing material that can cause diseases like mesothelioma, a rare cancer type.

Fortunately, modern cruise ships, in compliance with numerous safety standards, don’t contain asbestos anymore.

Still, since doctors often diagnose mesothelioma in a later stage, it’s better to see your healthcare provider regularly.

Are you interested in how cruise ships handle their passengers’ medical needs and emergencies at sea?

You’re maybe wondering about the technologies cruise ships have that can help with medical emergencies and disease treatments aboard the ship.

This article explains how cruise ships give medical care to passengers while at sea. It also discusses the different medical technologies cruise ships can utilize to provide medical care during emergencies or disease treatments.

How Cruise Ships Give Medical Care at Sea

Cruise ships usually originate from different countries. So there are no common standards for the ship’s minimum credentials for doctors, healthcare staff, or medical equipment.

Factors like passenger capacity, ship size, itinerary, staff, and facilities can also affect the ship’s medical care needs.

Despite these challenges, medical personnel aboard these ships must provide reasonable emergency medical care. Such care includes stabilizing the injured or ill traveler until the ship arrives at the port so that the traveler can receive definitive treatment in a land-based healthcare facility.

At a minimum, most cruise ship infirmaries should have the following:

  • One or more doctors and nurses
  • Medications
  • Bandages
  • Sutures
  • Oxygen
  • Wheelchairs and stretchers
  • Immobilization equipment for neck and back injuries
  • Cardiac defibrillators
  • External pacemakers
  • ECG and X-ray machines

As cruise lines continue to grow and medical technology improves, some ships have become equipped with telemedicine capabilities. Doctors aboard the ship can use a digital system to connect with specialists on shore, sharing video links and data.

Another concern is the possibility of disease outbreaks due to a tainted food supply or an infected individual. These outbreaks can affect many people, especially those gathered in a confined area, such as a cruise ship.

Cruise ships must comply with the Vessel Sanitation Program of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States to prevent or reduce the possibility of outbreaks.

This program requires ships carrying more than 13 passengers, visiting a U.S. territory or port, and sailing an international itinerary to be inspected for compliance for:

  • Medical facilities
  • Employee hygiene
  • Food preparation
  • Water supply
  • General cleanliness of the ship
  • Pool and spa filtration
  • Ventilation systems

The program scores each ship starting from 100 points and gradually deducts points based on violations. Ships with a score of 86 and higher pass the inspection.

If you want to travel on a cruise ship with a good sanitation record, consider reviewing these ships’ scores on the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program website before booking your travel.

Medical Technologies to Handle Emergencies and Disease Treatments at Sea

Many modern cruise ships have state-of-the-art medical facilities that meet or exceed healthcare standards at sea.

For example, some new cruise ships carry ECG (electrocardiogram) machines, defibrillators, digital X-ray equipment, and ventilators for respiratory conditions. Other ships even have pharmacies with a complete stock of drug products, especially for ailments common at sea.

One technological advancement that has provided a significant advantage for cruise ships is telemedicine.

Telemedicine uses telecommunication technology and electronic information to get the appropriate healthcare while you’re aboard a cruise ship. Telemedicine’s essential requirement is to have a phone or stable internet to continue your medical care.

The benefits of telemedicine include the following:

  • Consultation with your healthcare provider through the phone or live video call
  • Communication with your doctor by sending and receiving messages through email or a chat messaging platform
  • Remote monitoring of patients
  • Savings on travel time and transportation costs
  • Decreased waiting time for emergency or medical services
  • Reduced frequency of visits to the clinic

Some ships utilize telemedicine to help provide a higher level of care to guests while in remote locations at sea.

Telemedicine can also create an opportunity for cruise ships to provide the following healthcare services at sea:

  • Prescription for medication
  • General healthcare, including blood pressure checkups, wellness visits, and consultations for non-emergency illnesses
  • COVID-19 screening, testing recommendations, and guidance on quarantine or isolation
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Mental health counseling
